Twitter 101 provides an overview of how to use Twitter. It introduces key Twitter concepts like tweets (messages of 140 characters or fewer), hashtags, retweets, and mentions. The document explains how to set up a Twitter account and offers best practices for building relationships and engaging others on the platform. These include listening for comments, responding to questions, asking your own questions by mentioning other users, and sharing links others may find interesting.
4. The Basics
What is Twitter anyway?
Twitter is an information network made up of 140-character
messages called Tweets. It's an easy way to discover the
latest news related to subjects you care about.
How is it useful?
It’s like being delivered a newspaper whose headlines you’ll
always find interesting – you can discover news as it’s
happening, learn more about topics that are important to you,
and get the inside scoop in real time.
5. The Basics
Twitter Stats
• 310M Monthly Active users
• 1Billion Unique visits monthly to
sites with embedded Tweets
• 83% Active users on Mobile
7. Twitter Glossary – what does the icons mean?
A Tweet is a message posted via Twitter containing 140
characters or fewer.
Retweet
A Retweet is a Tweet from a third party that has been replicated in
another user’s Twitter timeline, retaining original attribution.
Retweets are often used to share news or valuable findings on
Twitter.
Verification
A verified badge is placed next to a user’s Twitter @username to
show that a legitimate source is authoring the account’s Tweets.
This is sometimes used on accounts who experience identity
confusion on Twitter.
8. Twitter Glossary…continued
Direct Messages
Direct Messages are private messages between the sender and
recipient. Tweets sent over SMS become messages when they
begin with “d username” to specify whom the message is for.
Hashtag
A hashtag (the # symbol) is used to mark keywords or topics in
a Tweet. Tweets with the same hashtag are bundled together
for easy subject-specific browsing, accessible by clicking the
hyperlinked text.
@Username
The @-sign is used to call out usernames in Tweets. When a
username is preceded by the @-sign, it becomes a link to a
Twitter profile.
Trends
A trend is a topic or subject algorithmically determined to be one
of the most popular on Twitter at the moment.

How is it useful?
Twitter contains real time information you may find valuable. You see messages from users you choose to follow with ease. It’s like being delivered a newspaper whose headlines you’ll always find interesting – you can discover news as it’s happening, learn more about topics that are important to you, and get the inside scoop in real time.
Oh twitter, you introduced us to #Hashtags and our culture was forever changed.
Tweet – think status, same way you would write a status except on twitter you have a 140 character limit on the message. Retweet – think “reposting” what someone has share
Always a nice reminder, be mindful of what you post, it lives on #Forever.
