2. ACTION AND ADVENTURE
• Action-adventure is a video game genre that
combines both the action and adventure
genres. They will usually contain action
elements such as explosions or fighting
whilst also giving the player a journey to go
on and even a new world to explore. Many
games now choose to go with the action-
adventure genre over just the adventure
genre as the adventure genre is currently
declining in both popularity and sales which
encourages game developers to add more
action into the adventure games that they
releasing.
3. DRIVING AND RACING
• The driving and racing genre includes
games that require the player to drive some
form of vehicle (car, motorbike etc.), usually
around a circuit/track against other
opponents to try and cross the line first. The
most popular games in this genre include
Forza, Need For Speed and Project Cars.
Most games in this genre usually come
under one of two categories; either simulator
or arcade.
4. FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER
• First-person shooters are games in which
the camera angle is first-person and you
hold a gun with objectives that involve
you shooting things. Some of the more
popular first-person shooters include Call
of Duty, Battlefield and Far Cry. Doom
was a major breakthrough in the first-
person shooter genre as it was arguably
the game that put first-person shooters
into the spotlight.
5. PLATFORM AND PUZZLE
• A platform game is a video game in which an
avatar is guided through suspended platforms
via jumping. In most cases the avatar will be
forced to overcome obstacles in order to advance
in the game and will usually be forced to do this
by free running through the course. It is very
unlikely that you would ever find a platform
game that does not have a jump button. This
jump button will be vital for players to complete
the course as they will be required to jump from
platform from platform whilst also avoiding
obstacles that will attempt to prevent the player
from reaching their destination.
6. ROLE PLAYING
• Role-playing games are games in which you are
required to take on the persona of somebody
else. These games are most commonly played
by “hard-core” gamers who take gaming
seriously enough that they are actually willing
to pretend to be the character that they are
playing with in the game. Examples of such
games include World of Warcraft, Arma III and
Runescape.
7. STRATEGY AND SIMULATION
• A strategy and simulation game is a game that
is based around a real life element such as
driving a car or flying a plane. They will aim to
make their games as realistic as possible to
make the player feel like they are doing
something the same way as it would be done in
real life such as flying a plane. These games
often require an element of strategy as they
are generally much harder than arcade games
etc.
8. SPORTS AND BEAT –’EM-UPS
• Sporting games have come a long way since the first few
sporting releases. The most notable, Popular at the time
and first sporting game was “Pong” which was a two play
tennis game. Since then many other sports have been
involved with gaming such as NFL, MLB, NBA, FIFA and
PGA. Since 2010 most of these sporting games have had a
heavily influenced online experience such as FIFA’s
Ultimate Team and a lot of these games are produced now
by 2K games or EA which both feature many micro
transactions to gain better players and items which
generates a lot of revenue. However, a negative to this is
that the gaming community have dubbed EA sport a
“money grabbing” company as due to the amount of paid
content they offer such as packs on FIFA.
