3. PROJECT BRIEF
Objectives of Project
The objectives of this project are as follows:
1. To enable students to develop an understanding of the building team, its
organization, duties and inter-relations within which they will seek employment,
career progression or further study.
2. To develop an awareness of their professional responsibilities and to appreciate
their profession in the construction industry.
Learning Outcomes of this Project
On successful completion of this assignment, students will be able to demonstrate
the following:
1. Explain the need to coordinate and develop an understanding of coherent working
relations among various industry players and to improve the communication
channels.
2. Ability to document their observations and understanding from interview session
and research resources as well as to communicate their findings in a systematic and
convincing presentation and reports.
3. Ability to justify the feasibility of a development and improve the proposal to serve
the purpose of the development.
Tasks - Methodology
In a group of 2 students, you need to find a specific empty land to initiate a small
construction project. The size of the land shall between 900m2 (30m x 30m) –
1200m2 (30m x 40m). You should propose ONE project that serves one of the
following purposes.
1. Recreation area
2. Commercial area
3. Industrial area
4. Agricultural area
5. Tourism area
6. Residential area

4. In your Project Brief report you are to include (but not limited to):
- Your suggestion and proposal
- The rationale, benefits and impacts of your project to the client and the surrounding
community/end user
- Introduction to the site
- Site plan
- Site analysis and observation
- Sketch plan of your proposal
- Sketches of your concept/ideas; images of your ideas.
- Optional:
 Some basic information of the authority procedures or flow that you need to
encounter/deal with in order to get the project done from the inception to the
completion i.e. the building plan approval process and procedures.

5. INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
For our project, we will be proposing to construct the “Taman Desa Garden Park” in our
selected site. The park will be located in Taman Bukit Desa, Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia and the park will serve as a recreational area for the local residents living around
the area. The dimensions of the park will be 40m by width and 30 m by length. The park will
have features such as, connecting gazebos, promenades, fountains, playgrounds, sitting areas
and soft scape.
SITE ANALYSIS
INTRODUCTION
TAMAN DESA:
Taman Desa was constructed in the early 1970’s and is located within Kuala Lumpur,
Selangor. It is located close to the city at only 12 kilometres away, and is relatively close to
all the other major suburbs as well. Mont Kiara is only 13 kilometres away, while Bangsar is
a mere 8 kilometres away and Petaling Jaya at 15 kilometres away. Known for its popular
eating locations, strategic location and hilly topography, Taman Desa is a residential area that
accommodates more than 30,000 residents living in the area. Taman Desa’s residential area is
mainly consisted of 70% of terrace houses and condominiums while bungalows and villas
make up the other 30%. Taman Desa is constantly increasing in population and expanding its
area with new plans for new buildings and residential areas.

6. THE SELECTED SITE:
SITE PLAN:
The selected site is located in Taman Bukit Desa, a vicinity located in Taman Desa. The site
is found between two residential condominiums, Desa Villa condominium and Bukit Desa
condominium that are located opposite the commercial block area in Taman Bukit Desa. The
site is 1200m^2(40mx30m) and is currently an empty area with vegetation wildly growing in
that area. There are also no occupants occupying the land. Its exact coordinates lie
3°06'41.0"N 101°41'09.4"E.

7. This site is a 40mx30m vacant empty area and nothing has been built on or renovated for the
past 10 years. Hence, unwanted vegetation such as weeds and tall grass have grown on top of
the land. The site’s side has also become sordid as people litter their rubbish there.
The site is surrounded by two condominiums namely, Desa Villa and Bukit Desa
condominiums.
A site analysis shows that the site is an ideal location for the construction of the garden park
due to the following reasons:
 Places in between major residential areas.
 Located in a major residential area
 Land has not been altered by any hardscape.
 Land is very fertile to growth of plants
 Unutilized space is found within the area
 Good air circulation as it is a large open space
 Good accessibility to location from road in front of the site.

8. Other Findings:
 The surrounding area of the site happens to have shop lots (e.g. restaurants;
mini marts; bistros; service centres)
 Residents in the area need a space to relax and to exercise
 No one enters the area as it is fenced up however there is an opening in the
fence
 The quality of the land and soil is still in good condition
 There aren’t many scenic or public places to relax in Taman Bukit Desa
 The site is 100% softscape, hence, it gives a very green and natural ambiance
 Taman Bukit Desa is a popular area visited by people every day.
PROJECT CONCEPT
The design concept of the garden park emulated its designs based on several ideas and design
concepts that can be incorporated into the park. A site visit was conducted to assure the
suitability of the designs.
Designs and ideas listed will be constructed in the plan of the garden park:
GAZEBO
Gazebos are small structures usually found in
parks and scenic areas. Its base structure is
normally geometrically shaped (e.g. circular,
square, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon,
etc.)
Its purpose is to provide shelter and shade for
patrons in the park who need a place to rest or
take shelter under.

9. PROMENADES
Promenades are the long levelled
strips of concrete or tiled surface that
is used as walk ways / paths for
patrons to get from one area to another
area of the an area.
Promenades are also mainly found in
parks as most patrons of the park don’t
want to dirty their feet or shoes.
These walk ways are normally built
with street lights beside it for patrons
to be able to see the path at night.
SITTING AREAS
Sitting areas are benches, chairs,
large boulders or sometimes even
art sculptures. It is a place for
patrons to rest their feet or to have a
seat to snack or do small work on.
Sitting areas are mainly placed
under trees or a roof to provide
shade from the Sun when patrons
use them. Rubbish bins are also
placed near these areas for the
convenience of the patrons and the
cleanliness of the park.
PONDS
Ponds are water features that are
often used as decoration in an area.
Ponds bring a sense of fluidity and
balance in nature as in the 4 main
elements. Hence, ponds are usually
used in Zen gardens to bring about
that feeling.
Ponds are mainly made of concrete
material and decorated with designs
about its surface. Filled with clean
water, ponds can sustain freshwater
aquatic plants and fish.

10. LAKE
Lakes are a bigger version of ponds
on a large scale. It acts as a water
feature that also can be found in
parks. Lakes are mainly freshwater,
especially artificial lakes. Hence,
lakes can only sustain freshwater
aquatic life.
The depth of a lake varies as it can
be either a natural or a man-made
lake. Features such as grasslands or
promenades are usually constructed
around the lake.
PLAYGROUND
Playgrounds are recreational play
areas for children that are mainly
found in parks. A playground is a
feature that is used to attract patrons
to the park.
Playgrounds can be constructed out
wood, plastic or any material that is
safe for children.
