Jinli streetis the oldest street in
Chengdu. it celebrates the rich cultural past of the
city and is luminated by a beautiful array of
Chinese lanterns
Chinese lanternsare deeply root-
ed in Chinese culture. Used initially as one of the
first ways to communicate aerially, these now rep-
resent culture in China, provide light + represent an
icon of the history + present.
Bamboo: This warrior plant thrives in Chi-
na. Chinese lanterns are composed of a collaps-
able bamboo frames covered wtih silk or rice pa-
per.
Rice paper+ silk are used to create
the external shell of the Chinese lanterns Often,
these lanterns are then decorated with Chinese
stories and/or poverbs
Interactive art + light sculptures are
an activating element in landscape architecture
and urban planning.
Shu culture Chengdu is the capitol city
of the Sichuan Province, birth-place of the Shu cul-
ture, and epicenter of political, economic + cultural
affairs in south west China.
Chengdu plain sculpts the surrond-
ing land into a lush, abundant agrucultural mecca.
This alluvial plain in the Sichuan Basin is character-
ized by terraced fields and the ancient Dujiangyan
irrigation system dating back to the Qin Dynasty.
