Jonathan FuhrkenCrafting an easier and better experience for
those caring for an aging or ill loved one.
2. Problem Statement & Objectives
❖ Allow for a customer to invite other concerned parties
❖ Allow multiple concerned parties to access and participate
❖ Ability for a customer to manage and participate in
multiple care plans
Currently, is is easier for customers and Care Coordinators to
leave the platform and communicate via email—the progress
toward a Care Plan within these messages isn’t being captured.
We have explored how someone can invite others to confer and
support their Care Recipient at Wellthy.
3. Research Interviews
To cultivate a blend of observations, the following
comprised our research :
❖ Focus group recording that served as baseline research
❖ Phone interviews of Care Coordinators gave us a
perspective of how care is provided
❖ Consulted outsiders to gain a more comprehensive view
of potential users
4. User Stories & Personas
Concerned parties are coming to Wellthy in need of relief and
support—in such trying times, an interview is inappropriate.
However, those whom we could interview offered vivid tales
of these delicate situations :
“Help family members to be the project managers…”
“If I don’t bring the notebook home, we have no idea of his running
care, or what’s going on…”
“I feel like I’ve taken on a second job… If you could just take that
second job off of me. It affects us personally, and the time I have for
other things.”

his father, Robert.
Robert Norman Ross II is an elderly
man, who values his independence,
but has unfortunately become too ill
to care for himself.
Currently, Robert is living with his
son Bob Ross, and Bob’s wife,
Jennifer Ross.
He doesn’t think he needs help
caring for himself, and he certainly
doesn’t want to burden Bob with his
care.
Bob Ross is currently caring for his
father, Robert Norman Ross II, who is
beginning to show signs of dementia.
He needs a service that can help him
coordinate care for his sick father,
because managing his father’s care is
taking a toll on his personal and
professional life.
Robert living with he and Jennifer can
only be temporary. Bob will need help
getting his stubborn father the
assisted living he needs long term.
Jennifer Ross is currently helping her
husband care for his father Robert.
Her father-in-law has always had an
independent spirit, but doesnt reaize
how often Jennifer has to step in and
assist him.
She cares about Robert, but his
stubbornness makes caring for him
difficult. His care is putting a strain
on their marriage.
Eager to stay informed about plans
to care for Robert, but he is so
resistant to help that she cannot rely
on him to keep her apprised.
6. Feature Prioritization
According to care givers, a variety of tools are used to manage care.
Since users find it easier to leave the platform and communicate by
email, we chose to focus on in-platform communication.
At Wellthy, users should be able to ____________.
❖ Communicate with other Concerned Parties
❖ Invite other Concerned Parties to participate
❖ Assign a Primary Care Giver who controls account access
❖ Access accounts for multiple Care Recipients
7. Early Mockups & Results
❖ Research helped define the complicated network of
users : all Concerned Parties involved in the care of elderly
or ill loved one.
❖ Discovering ways to reflect these relationships and
how they could chat with each other was essential.
❖ Once a storyline was developed, views of account
access management and multiparty chat were central.

11. Usability Findings
❖ Comments appearing as word bubbles was a familiar and desirable
visual format for chat, validated by testing.
❖ As relationships displayed in Wellthy became more complicated, the
secondary level navigation row became too important to consolidate.
❖ More prominence was needed for the Invite button to add Concerned
Parties to the account—moving it from a secondary account settings
screen, to appearing within the drop down menu and at left in chat.
❖ When inviting a Concerned Party to join an account, a checkbox to
declare an invitee as already being a member made sense—Wellthy
checking for the email address in its records may not be enough.
12. Next Steps
❖ The prototype can always be tested further, with users nearer to the
Wellthy service network, both Coordinators and Care Recipients.
❖ Adding or subscribing Concerned Parties to Tasks in Care Plan
❖ Contacts to store info for Doctors and Care Givers
❖ Calendar to track appointments, treatments and notify
❖ ability to sync external calendars
❖ ability to sync Wellthy calendar to other apps
❖ Consent procedure incorporated to ease permission process for
contact between Coordinator and medical professionals
