Overseas/Overnight Markets
ď‚· U.S. stock index futures fell, taking a cue from European and Asian
markets, as worries over global growth prospects and the outcome of
Greece’s private-sector bond swap later this week weigh on sentiment.
There is no U.S. economic data on the docket today.
ď‚· European stocks dropped, with banks and resource stocks among the
`largest detractors. A report released this morning showed a 0.3% Q/Q
contraction in the euro-area economy in Q4, confirming an initial estimate
published on February 15. Large declines in investment, exports and
consumer spending were to blame for the overall GDP contraction. Also
weighing on investors was a memo from the Institute of International
Finance that warned that a disorderly default would cause the euro zone
more than 1 trillion euros ($1.36 trillion) in damage, Reuters reported. The
report also stated that a default would likely force Italy and Spain to seek
aid to prevent being engulfed in the region’s debt crisis.
 Private investors that have declared their participation in Greece’s debt
restructuring hold about 20% of the bonds involved in a swap, the creditors’
stering committee said yesterday. The goal of the swap, which runs
through March 8, is to reduce the amount of privately-held Greek debt by
53.5% and help secure Greece’s second rescue package.
ď‚· Asian stocks fell sharply, with miners among the top declines, following
global markets lower on growth concerns. The Hang Seng shed 2.2%,
while the Shanghai Composite fell 1.4%. Japan’s Nikkei gave up a more
modest 0.6%.
North American Market Highlights & Headlines
ď‚· Aecon Group Inc. (ARE-T) reported a 143% increase in quarterly earnings
on Monday as margins improved on lower costs. Aecon reported EPS of
$0.49, up from $0.20 a year ago. Revenue in the quarter was $790 million,
down from $841 million, and well shy of the $859 million consensus
estimate. Aecon's backlog stood at $2.39 billion at December 31, 2011.

Overseas and Overnight Markets
ď‚· U.S. stock index futures are pointing to a lower open as traders eye a potentially tense
meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping later in
the trading week. Today will see trade deficit data for February released prior to the
open. Economists expect it to have narrowed to $44.8 billion from a five-year high of
$48.5 billion. These are not typical market-moving data, but investors will keep an eye
on them because of Trump's meeting with the Chinese premier.
ď‚· Asian markets ended the trading day mixed as the main headline overnight was the
decline in the Australian dollar as the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) rhetoric
appeared slightly dovish. Tokyo's Nikkei Index finished the session with a 0.91% loss.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index and Shanghai's Stock Composite Index were both closed
for national holidays.
ď‚· European markets are hovering around the flat line in afternoon trade as investors focus
on an upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and China's Premier.
The pan-European Stoxx 600 is trading approximately 0.15% lower.
Company Headlines
ď‚· As Rogers Communications Inc. (RCI-T) prepares to welcome a new CEO in July,
changes are afoot in the top echelons with two senior executives’ departures announced
within two months. Chief strategy officer Frank Boulben will leave the company, Rogers
confirmed Monday, a month after chief corporate affairs officer Jacob Glick’s departure
in March. Both Boulben and Glick were hired to the senior leadership team during former
CEO Guy Laurence’s tenure, which was cut short last October when he was fired in part
due to conflicts with the Rogers family.
ď‚· Montreal-based SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. (SNC-T) confirmed that it is currently in talks
with WS Atkins PLC, the British engineering and construction company, in a deal valued
at roughly $3.5 billion. The offer by SNC-Lavalin to acquire the British company fits
squarely within the company’s plans to shift toward lower-risk sectors and away from oil,
gas and mining, analysts say. News of the merger talks broke after the British firm
released a statement saying SNC-Lavalin had made an all-cash offer worth 2,080 pence
per WS Atkins share.
ď‚· Automakers sold a record number of vehicles in Canada during March, with General
Motors Canada (GM-N) leading in sales volume and posting its best monthly sales
performance since 2008. Overall Canadian sales were driven by an 11.1% increase in
consumer demand for pickups and SUVs during the month, which more than offset a
0.3% dip in passenger car sales. GM Canada reported double digit sales growth from
the same period last year as it sold 30,115 total vehicles in March translating into a
22.9% increase YoY.

Before the Open April 4 2017

  • 1. ď‚· bbbsb Overseas/Overnight Markets ď‚· U.S. stock index futures fell, taking a cue from European and Asian markets, as worries over global growth prospects and the outcome of Greece’s private-sector bond swap later this week weigh on sentiment. There is no U.S. economic data on the docket today. ď‚· European stocks dropped, with banks and resource stocks among the `largest detractors. A report released this morning showed a 0.3% Q/Q contraction in the euro-area economy in Q4, confirming an initial estimate published on February 15. Large declines in investment, exports and consumer spending were to blame for the overall GDP contraction. Also weighing on investors was a memo from the Institute of International Finance that warned that a disorderly default would cause the euro zone more than 1 trillion euros ($1.36 trillion) in damage, Reuters reported. The report also stated that a default would likely force Italy and Spain to seek aid to prevent being engulfed in the region’s debt crisis. ď‚· Private investors that have declared their participation in Greece’s debt restructuring hold about 20% of the bonds involved in a swap, the creditors’ stering committee said yesterday. The goal of the swap, which runs through March 8, is to reduce the amount of privately-held Greek debt by 53.5% and help secure Greece’s second rescue package. ď‚· Asian stocks fell sharply, with miners among the top declines, following global markets lower on growth concerns. The Hang Seng shed 2.2%, while the Shanghai Composite fell 1.4%. Japan’s Nikkei gave up a more modest 0.6%. North American Market Highlights & Headlines ď‚· Aecon Group Inc. (ARE-T) reported a 143% increase in quarterly earnings on Monday as margins improved on lower costs. Aecon reported EPS of $0.49, up from $0.20 a year ago. Revenue in the quarter was $790 million, down from $841 million, and well shy of the $859 million consensus estimate. Aecon's backlog stood at $2.39 billion at December 31, 2011. Overseas and Overnight Markets ď‚· U.S. stock index futures are pointing to a lower open as traders eye a potentially tense meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping later in the trading week. Today will see trade deficit data for February released prior to the open. Economists expect it to have narrowed to $44.8 billion from a five-year high of $48.5 billion. These are not typical market-moving data, but investors will keep an eye on them because of Trump's meeting with the Chinese premier. ď‚· Asian markets ended the trading day mixed as the main headline overnight was the decline in the Australian dollar as the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) rhetoric appeared slightly dovish. Tokyo's Nikkei Index finished the session with a 0.91% loss. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index and Shanghai's Stock Composite Index were both closed for national holidays. ď‚· European markets are hovering around the flat line in afternoon trade as investors focus on an upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and China's Premier. The pan-European Stoxx 600 is trading approximately 0.15% lower. Company Headlines ď‚· As Rogers Communications Inc. (RCI-T) prepares to welcome a new CEO in July, changes are afoot in the top echelons with two senior executives’ departures announced within two months. Chief strategy officer Frank Boulben will leave the company, Rogers confirmed Monday, a month after chief corporate affairs officer Jacob Glick’s departure in March. Both Boulben and Glick were hired to the senior leadership team during former CEO Guy Laurence’s tenure, which was cut short last October when he was fired in part due to conflicts with the Rogers family. ď‚· Montreal-based SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. (SNC-T) confirmed that it is currently in talks with WS Atkins PLC, the British engineering and construction company, in a deal valued at roughly $3.5 billion. The offer by SNC-Lavalin to acquire the British company fits squarely within the company’s plans to shift toward lower-risk sectors and away from oil, gas and mining, analysts say. News of the merger talks broke after the British firm released a statement saying SNC-Lavalin had made an all-cash offer worth 2,080 pence per WS Atkins share. ď‚· Automakers sold a record number of vehicles in Canada during March, with General Motors Canada (GM-N) leading in sales volume and posting its best monthly sales performance since 2008. Overall Canadian sales were driven by an 11.1% increase in consumer demand for pickups and SUVs during the month, which more than offset a 0.3% dip in passenger car sales. GM Canada reported double digit sales growth from the same period last year as it sold 30,115 total vehicles in March translating into a 22.9% increase YoY.
