Dear Dr. Long,
I have had the pleasure to be John Hamilton’s supervisor for his Communications & Fundraising
Internship at the Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter, and can verify that he fulfilled the 140-hour
requirement and all expectations we had for him. John’s internship began on February 17, 2016,
and ended on May 5, 2016.
During John’s internship, he assisted our organization in several ways, including coordinating
our Amplify Austin Day outreach, developing content for our website, and assisting with social
media efforts. John exemplified the sort of cross-discipline skill set that we expect. Given our
limited resources, staff, interns, and volunteers are called on to do many different things to
foster movement building. It was great working with John because he already had experience
event planning, which helped our fundraising efforts. He had a solid grounding in our issues,
particular water, which helped build our water resource web pages, and he also applied his
knowledge of social media best practices to build our burgeoning following on Instagram.
John put thought into all facets of his work, and took his responsibilities very seriously. He was
also very cognizant and respectful of deadlines. I sincerely hope this internship also helped
build John’s understanding of the non-profit/advocacy world, as well as his marketable skill set
in each area he worked on.
If you have any questions or would like to follow up with me on anything, please feel free to
contact me.
Sincerely,
Matthew Johnson
Communications Manager
