1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Amref is an international non-governmental organization that deals with health care issues and
strives at improving health care in Africa. Over the holiday I had identified a place to do my
community based attachment and approached a medical clinic but they took long to respond back
to me on which day I was to start my attachment during which a friend of mine introduced me to
Amref. Since time is a crucial factor I opted to start my attachment with Amref. The application
procedure was that I present my letter for community based attachment that I had been given
from school ,copy of my ID, copy of my school ID and copy of my community based attachment
details form. I was then required to pay a fee of 1000 Kshs for Ungana membership for Amref.
The task I was to do mainly was outreach but some of the major activities I underwent during the
attachment period were:
1. Fundraising
2. Outreach
3. Awareness and Advocacy
4. Training and Development
5. Communication
2. INTRODUCTION OF THE ORGANIZATION
The organization I got to have an opportunity with to do my community based attachment was
Amref. Amref is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1957 to deal with
health care issues and strives at improving health care in Africa. The pioneers of Amref were
doctors who wanted to improve healthcare services for remote and unprivileged communities,
this was achieved by the revolution of aircrafts to access this remote communities thus they were
later know as Flying Doctors of East Africa. Their website is http://amref.org/
The organization mainly operates in Medical and Capacity building. In medical sector this
involves maternal and child health, fighting diseases, water and sanitation, clinical and
diagnostic services and research for improving healthcare across Africa. In Capacity building
there is basic and post-basic training for nurses, governance, leadership and management training
and community development and outreach through Ungana AMREF which is volunteer
programme made up of young individuals who strive at community outreach and national
development.
The beneficiaries for Ungana and Amref are the pregnant women, children, nurses, doctors,
employees under Amref, disease and health deprived communities.
The next page shows chart of an organizational structure of Amref.

3.2 Description of work station.
Ungana AMREF is basically a volunteer programme made up of young individuals who strive
towards community outreach and national development. Our programme coordinator was Steve
Machua who briefed us what Ungana Amref is all about and on how we will go about our
activities. The working areas would vary as we would visit children homes, primary schools and
also mentoring workshops at YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) branch near Nairobi
University.
The task presented to volunteers was active participation in the programme, for example we
could help paint at Moonlight academy, mentoring the class 8s at Mwiki primary, delivery and
fixing of beds at Mwamko children’s home near Ruaka area. In all this we would make sure the
tasks are done and all activities coordinated with Steve Machua and the respective parties we had
gone to visit. We also organized ourselves and met in town before going out for an activity and
go as a group, we also took photos during the programmes and shared them on our whats app
group we had formed for the Ungana Amref volunteers for remembrance at the end of the day.
4. IMPACT OF THE INTERNTSHIP
Ungana Amref provided us a conducive environment to work well with the people we
reached out. The work experiences were fulfilling and fun especially when we had gone to do
the painting activity at Moonlight Academy; it was a first experience to do so.
I learnt the value of team work and coordination with my fellow volunteers, we learnt from
each other’s mistake and also share in our work experiences to achieve the tasks that were
placed before us.
The attachment also instilled me with leadership, self control and time skills. This is
mentoring the class 8s , doing task without supervision and doing it as required and also
managing time well when planning and executing the internship programmes.
Being a volunteer ,we expected perhaps we would be treated different at the places of work
we went to but to our surprise the communities we interacted with treated us just one of them
and we also did likewise thus we bonded well and the value of family and trust came about.
At work ,I realized people have different opinions when it comes to decision making thus we
should respect their opinions towards decision making and try to arrive at a decision that
favors most of them in a democratic way, this is something I hope to incorporate in my future
study and life in projects and group works.
Having to reach out to the less fortunate in the society is part of human kindness as we value
the worth a human being. This is something we were taught in Philosophical Anthropology.
This is “ubuntu” which is “the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all
humanity". Thus we should have empathy to the less fortunate by sharing what we have that
may contribute towards their development as a human being.
Having being taught communication skills in class, it was good to apply it when
communicating with our supervisor, programme coordinator, my fellow volunteers and also
the communities we interacted with. This is application such as conflict resolutions when
some volunteers were at logger heads thus evaluation the situation and coming up with the
best way to solve the issue between the two.
5. CONCLUSIONS
Generally my experience doing my community based attachment has been good. I have learned
social management skills, fundraising, outreach, awareness, advocacy training and development.
I also learnt about social entrepreneurship where we can get involved in entrepreneurship
businesses that end up benefiting the society. The workshop and training I attended on Behavior
Change also impacted be positively towards instilling good morals in life in order to make wise
decisions in life.
The general observations I mainly made while at Ungana Amref was that volunteership
programs do help a lot in impacting the society positively, this is when the volunteers come up
together to support the less fortunate and work towards building the nation. This programs range
from one place to another, from schools to children’s homes providing them with food and basic
needs making life a little bit comfortable. Although Amref is a medical based organization they
also have the community social responsibility branch –Ungana Amref thus other organizations
out there should emulate.

  • 3. 1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Amref is an international non-governmental organization that deals with health care issues and strives at improving health care in Africa. Over the holiday I had identified a place to do my community based attachment and approached a medical clinic but they took long to respond back to me on which day I was to start my attachment during which a friend of mine introduced me to Amref. Since time is a crucial factor I opted to start my attachment with Amref. The application procedure was that I present my letter for community based attachment that I had been given from school ,copy of my ID, copy of my school ID and copy of my community based attachment details form. I was then required to pay a fee of 1000 Kshs for Ungana membership for Amref. The task I was to do mainly was outreach but some of the major activities I underwent during the attachment period were: 1. Fundraising 2. Outreach 3. Awareness and Advocacy 4. Training and Development 5. Communication
  • 4. 2. INTRODUCTION OF THE ORGANIZATION The organization I got to have an opportunity with to do my community based attachment was Amref. Amref is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1957 to deal with health care issues and strives at improving health care in Africa. The pioneers of Amref were doctors who wanted to improve healthcare services for remote and unprivileged communities, this was achieved by the revolution of aircrafts to access this remote communities thus they were later know as Flying Doctors of East Africa. Their website is http://amref.org/ The organization mainly operates in Medical and Capacity building. In medical sector this involves maternal and child health, fighting diseases, water and sanitation, clinical and diagnostic services and research for improving healthcare across Africa. In Capacity building there is basic and post-basic training for nurses, governance, leadership and management training and community development and outreach through Ungana AMREF which is volunteer programme made up of young individuals who strive at community outreach and national development. The beneficiaries for Ungana and Amref are the pregnant women, children, nurses, doctors, employees under Amref, disease and health deprived communities. Ungana AMREF is basically a volunteer programme made up of young individuals who strive towards community outreach and national development. Our programme coordinator was Steve Machua who briefed us what Ungana Amref is all about and on how we will go about our activities. The working areas would vary as we would visit children homes, primary schools and also mentoring workshops at YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) branch near Nairobi University. The task presented to volunteers was active participation in the programme, for example we could help paint at Moonlight academy, mentoring the class 8s at Mwiki primary, delivery and fixing of beds at Mwamko children’s home near Ruaka area. In all this we would make sure the tasks are done and all activities coordinated with Steve Machua and the respective parties we had gone to visit. We also organized ourselves and met in town before going out for an activity and go as a group, we also took photos during the programmes and shared them on our whats app group we had formed for the Ungana Amref volunteers for remembrance at the end of the day.
  • 21. 4. IMPACT OF THE INTERNTSHIP Ungana Amref provided us a conducive environment to work well with the people we reached out. The work experiences were fulfilling and fun especially when we had gone to do the painting activity at Moonlight Academy; it was a first experience to do so. I learnt the value of team work and coordination with my fellow volunteers, we learnt from each other’s mistake and also share in our work experiences to achieve the tasks that were placed before us. The attachment also instilled me with leadership, self control and time skills. This is mentoring the class 8s , doing task without supervision and doing it as required and also managing time well when planning and executing the internship programmes. Being a volunteer ,we expected perhaps we would be treated different at the places of work we went to but to our surprise the communities we interacted with treated us just one of them and we also did likewise thus we bonded well and the value of family and trust came about. At work ,I realized people have different opinions when it comes to decision making thus we should respect their opinions towards decision making and try to arrive at a decision that favors most of them in a democratic way, this is something I hope to incorporate in my future study and life in projects and group works. Having to reach out to the less fortunate in the society is part of human kindness as we value the worth a human being. This is something we were taught in Philosophical Anthropology. This is “ubuntu” which is “the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity". Thus we should have empathy to the less fortunate by sharing what we have that may contribute towards their development as a human being. Having being taught communication skills in class, it was good to apply it when communicating with our supervisor, programme coordinator, my fellow volunteers and also
  • 22. the communities we interacted with. This is application such as conflict resolutions when some volunteers were at logger heads thus evaluation the situation and coming up with the best way to solve the issue between the two.
  • 23. 5. CONCLUSIONS Generally my experience doing my community based attachment has been good. I have learned social management skills, fundraising, outreach, awareness, advocacy training and development. I also learnt about social entrepreneurship where we can get involved in entrepreneurship businesses that end up benefiting the society. The workshop and training I attended on Behavior Change also impacted be positively towards instilling good morals in life in order to make wise decisions in life. The general observations I mainly made while at Ungana Amref was that volunteership programs do help a lot in impacting the society positively, this is when the volunteers come up together to support the less fortunate and work towards building the nation. This programs range from one place to another, from schools to children’s homes providing them with food and basic needs making life a little bit comfortable. Although Amref is a medical based organization they also have the community social responsibility branch –Ungana Amref thus other organizations out there should emulate.
