Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 4
I. LESSON OBJECTIVES
At the end of a 30min period the pupils should be able to:
a. Identify the parts of a seed
b. Appreciate and value the importance of seed germination
c. Illustrate understanding of each part

B. REVIEW
Class can you still remember our lesson yesterday?
Now, to test if you really remember. I have
something to show you. I have here pictures I
want you to identify what is this and its stages.
Do you understand?
(The teacher shows a picture of the life cycle
of a butterfly)
(The teacher will ask each stages of the life cycle.)
“So what life cycle is that?”
“Very Good!”

C. MAIN LESSON
1. MOTIVATION
“Okay class, Have you seen a seed?”
“What kind of seeds do you know? Can you give
me examples?”
(The teacher will call one by one to give examples)
(The teacher will post a picture of a seed)
“Here are some examples of seeds.”
“What do you notice about those seeds?”
“Yes. Very Good!”

ACTIVITY
“Now, I have here a short story and I
want you to listen carefully and you will
answer few questions later.”
(The teacher will present “The Tiny
Seed” by Eric Carle via video
presentation)
“Did you enjoy the story?”
“Are you ready to answer some
questions?”
Discussion Questions:
-Who is the main character in the story?
-What blows the seeds?
-Did they fell on the ground during
autumn?
-Why do you think Tiny seed is the last
one who grew?
“Do you have any idea what our lesson will be?”
“Yes! Very good.”
“Today, we are going to learn the different parts of
a SEED.”
“Here’s a drawing of a seed. You are going to
identify what are its parts as we discuss our
lesson.”
Yes, teacher!

“The Tiny Seed”
“Air!”
“No, ma’am”
(Pupils will respond)
“About SEED ma’am”
PARTS OF A SEED
 EMBRYO/RADICLE – is a part of a
seed that grows into a new plant.
 Hypocotyl – its lower end,
forms the first root of the
seedling.
 Epicotyl – its upper end,
becomes the first stem.
“Anyone can put a label on where the
Hypocotyl is?”
“How about the Epicotyl?”
 Cotyledons – serve for the
digestion and storage of
food.
“Anyone who can put label on cotyledons?”
(Selected pupils will go infront and label out the
Hypocotyl and the Epicotyl in the illustration)
(Pupils will raise their hands and the selected one
will go infront)
 ENDOSPERM – is the food-storage
tissue which is digested and
absorbed by the cotyledons.
“Don’t be confused between cotyledons
and endosperm. Cotyledons serve for
digestion while Endosperm is the food-
storage which is digested and absorbed by
the Cotyledons.”
“Do you undertstand?”
“Another part of the seed is the seed coat.”
“Can anyone please read what seed coat is
and put a label on it in the illustration?”
 SEED COAT – it helps protect the
embryo.
“Okay. Thank you. So you see, the SEED
COAT is the outer part of a seed.”
“A seed only develops its parts only when it
undergoes a process called SEED GERMINATION.”
(The teacher will post the definition of
GERMINATION)
(She will let the pupils read it loud)
“GERMINATION is a process by which a plant
grows from a seed.”
“There are several factors that influence
germination. First is the seed it should be carefully
chosen to make sure it is germinating. Then the
soil and temperature must be favorable.”
“I have here short video clip for you to see how a
seed develops into a plant. A mung bean in
particular. I want you to observe very carefully
how a seed turns into a plant.”
“GERMINATION is a process by which a plant
grows from a seed.”
(The teacher will play the video and do the
discussion while the video is playing”
“Before germination the seed begins to absorb
water. Without water seed cannot germinate. Then
the embryo begins to grow.”
“The radicle or embryonic roots come out first.
As you can see the HYPOCOTYL begins to grow.
The hypocotyl grows longer, it begins to straighten
out.
The growing hypocotyl pulls the COTYLEDONS and
EPICOTYL out of the soil.
Eventually epicotyls develop into the shoot and the
leaves of a seedling.”
“So that’s it. With proper nutrients you will be able
to grow your plant well.”
VALUE
“Who among you had bald hair during their
infancy? Or when you were still a baby?”
“Okay there are few. But try to imagine seeds are
just like a baby with no hair. As time goes by it
develops and when it is properly nourished it will
grow beautiful. Just like the seed when you take
good care of it, it will grow into a beautiful plant.”
“Did you understand the lesson?”
“Are there any questions?”
(Pupils will raise their hands)
“Yes, ma’am”
“None, ma’am”
IV. EVALUATION
Instructions:
Group Activity
I have here examples of seeds in its germination in each jar. Identify which part
of the seed has already formed in it. Arrange it according to the stages. Write
your answers on a sheet of paper. Choose one representative to discuss what
stage of the seed is in the jar. Each stage should have one representative.
V. ASSIGNMENT
“Answer the following in your notebook.”
1. List down the factors that affect seed germination and growth.
2. Where a flowering does plants start?
3. How does the seed grow into a plant?

ACTIVITY “Now, I have here a short story and I want you to listen carefully and you will answer few questions later.” (The teacher will present “The Tiny Seed” by Eric Carle via video presentation) “Did you enjoy the story?” “Are you ready to answer some questions?” Discussion Questions: -Who is the main character in the story? -What blows the seeds? -Did they fell on the ground during autumn? -Why do you think Tiny seed is the last one who grew? “Do you have any idea what our lesson will be?” “Yes! Very good.” “Today, we are going to learn the different parts of a SEED.” “Here’s a drawing of a seed. You are going to identify what are its parts as we discuss our lesson.” Yes, teacher! “Yes, ma’am” “The Tiny Seed” “Air!” “No, ma’am” (Pupils will respond) “About SEED ma’am”

PARTS OF A SEED  EMBRYO/RADICLE – is a part of a seed that grows into a new plant.  Hypocotyl – its lower end, forms the first root of the seedling.  Epicotyl – its upper end, becomes the first stem. “Anyone can put a label on where the Hypocotyl is?” “How about the Epicotyl?”  Cotyledons – serve for the digestion and storage of food. “Anyone who can put label on cotyledons?” (Selected pupils will go infront and label out the Hypocotyl and the Epicotyl in the illustration) (Pupils will raise their hands and the selected one will go infront)
  • 6.  ENDOSPERM – is the food-storage tissue which is digested and absorbed by the cotyledons. “Don’t be confused between cotyledons and endosperm. Cotyledons serve for digestion while Endosperm is the food- storage which is digested and absorbed by the Cotyledons.” “Do you undertstand?” “Another part of the seed is the seed coat.” “Can anyone please read what seed coat is and put a label on it in the illustration?”  SEED COAT – it helps protect the embryo. “Okay. Thank you. So you see, the SEED COAT is the outer part of a seed.” “A seed only develops its parts only when it undergoes a process called SEED GERMINATION.” (The teacher will post the definition of GERMINATION) (She will let the pupils read it loud) “GERMINATION is a process by which a plant grows from a seed.” “There are several factors that influence germination. First is the seed it should be carefully chosen to make sure it is germinating. Then the soil and temperature must be favorable.” “I have here short video clip for you to see how a seed develops into a plant. A mung bean in particular. I want you to observe very carefully how a seed turns into a plant.” “GERMINATION is a process by which a plant grows from a seed.”
  • 7. (The teacher will play the video and do the discussion while the video is playing” “Before germination the seed begins to absorb water. Without water seed cannot germinate. Then the embryo begins to grow.” “The radicle or embryonic roots come out first. As you can see the HYPOCOTYL begins to grow. The hypocotyl grows longer, it begins to straighten out. The growing hypocotyl pulls the COTYLEDONS and EPICOTYL out of the soil. Eventually epicotyls develop into the shoot and the leaves of a seedling.” “So that’s it. With proper nutrients you will be able to grow your plant well.” VALUE “Who among you had bald hair during their infancy? Or when you were still a baby?” “Okay there are few. But try to imagine seeds are just like a baby with no hair. As time goes by it develops and when it is properly nourished it will grow beautiful. Just like the seed when you take good care of it, it will grow into a beautiful plant.” “Did you understand the lesson?” “Are there any questions?” (Pupils will raise their hands) “Yes, ma’am” “None, ma’am”
  • 8. IV. EVALUATION Instructions: Group Activity I have here examples of seeds in its germination in each jar. Identify which part of the seed has already formed in it. Arrange it according to the stages. Write your answers on a sheet of paper. Choose one representative to discuss what stage of the seed is in the jar. Each stage should have one representative. V. ASSIGNMENT “Answer the following in your notebook.” 1. List down the factors that affect seed germination and growth. 2. Where a flowering does plants start? 3. How does the seed grow into a plant?
