Different Forms of Community Engagement
Group Activity: Role Playing
You will be divided into two groups. Each group will make a role play about the
different forms of community engagement in educational settings. Preparation
time is 10 minutes and 5 minutes presentation.
Rubrics for Role Playing:
Community Action
- refers to collective efforts done by the people directed toward
addressing social problems (e.g. social inequalities, environmental
degradation, and poverty) in order to achieve social well-being. Community
action can take the form of community engagement and solidarity, which
bolster citizenship in the process.
- The following are emphasized and discussed substantively in this module:
(1)community engagement, (2) solidarity, (3) citizenship and (4 social
change.
Community engagement- refers to the process of developing
partnerships and sustaining relationships with and through
groups of people affiliated by geographic proximity or common
interest for the purpose of working for the common good and
of addressing issues that affect their well-being.
- Community engagement in educational settings can take
many forms but the most common are service learning,
community outreach, and community engaged research.
• Service learning- is a teaching methodology that employs
community service and reflection on service to teach community
engagement, develop greater community and social responsibility
and strengthen communities. Service learning projects are expected
to be a collaborative effort between the community and the
students so that a certain community issue or social problem can be
addressed.
- Studies have shown that students who have undergone service
learning are more likely to engage in activities that promote civic
engagement than those who did not.
Community outreach- refers to the voluntary services done by students,
faculty, school employees, or alumni in response to the social, economic,
and political needs of communities. This is done in order to improve the
community members’ quality of life. Voluntary service can take two
forms: (1) community service or (2) community development.
-in community service, voluntary services are one-way initiative from the
one who devotes time and resources to the communities.
- In community development, would require fostering partnerships and
sustaining relationships with communities. This allows a collective
participation for the enhancement of the community’s well-being.
• Community engaged research- is a collaborative process between the
faculty and /or the student researchers and the partner community
conducting research. Here, the communities are considered as co- leaders in
the design and conduct of the different phases of the research process. The
research process ranges from the identification of research agendas; design
and delivery of research tools; discussions on culturally appropriate
measures; ethical considerations in designing effective and well-received
recruitment strategies n gathering research participants; identification of
meaningful, creative, and broad-reaching avenues in disseminating the
products of research; and implementation of research reciprocity projects.

Editor's Notes

  1. What do the pictures convey?
  2. What did you learn from the activity? What concept can you draw out from your presentation? What do you mean by service learning? How about community outreach? If you are given a chance to do a community service or community development project, how would you do it?
  3. Community engagement is necessary so that you as a student could learn social responsibilty. Community engagement in a school setting can take the form of service learning.community outreach, or community engaged research. Through community engagement, you as a student learn that you have the abilities to help bring positive change in their surrounding communities
  4. This initiative allows student to develop leadership, communication, cultural understanding and critical thinking- aside from bridging social theory and practice. The students were more envolved in community engagement and civic responsibility later in life were more likely to be interested in world events, were more likely to talk about politics, and were more likely to believe they can make a difference in their community.
  5. Community service- it does not necessarily require of long term relationships between the provider of voluntary services and the recipient of the services.
  6. All of theses are geared toward strenghthening the academic discipline of fsculty or student researchers and promoting the well-being of the partner community
