Jessie Darnell

2. Renell Medrano
◦ Born and raised in the Bronx. She is an
Dominican-American photographer. She
creates work that speaks to her heritage, the
intersections of culture within society and the
communities around her.
◦ In renellmedrano.com it states that “While
earning her BFA in Photography at Parsons
The New York School for Design, the 27-year-
old was awarded a New York Times Lens Blog
Award in 2014”.

3. Career Path
◦ Renell worked with a lot of people in her
years. Renell was a freelancer start from
college. She worked with shooting
fashion shows for Elle Indonesia. She
also captured ASAP Ferg new album
cover. The one person that blow here
career up is when she took a trip with
Kylie Jenner and photographed the
whole trip. Ever since then a lot of
people has helped her out with her
career. Now she’s I will known all over.

4. ERA
◦ The era that Renell worked in the era of digital
democratization. Although today is not like the other years
woman today still have trouble. Woman don’t get the
respect they get because men feel woman shouldn’t be
able to do a men’s job. She did everything that men that is
taking longer the achieve. The state of this time is calm
but still hard for a woman. Renell is still overcoming things
men wish they achieved at her age.

5. Motivation
◦ Her motivation was when she was 15 and
her mother brought her a camera.
Whatever comes from choice of color in a
photograph is how she takes her pictures
to keep going. Color plays a big role for
her because it sets the mood. She’s is also
motivated by seeking change in her
community and culture. Self-
determination has also been her secret
weapon to her motivation.

6. Technology
◦ The technology that she used was anDSLR camera. She
was always amazed with the point-and-shoot cameras that
was around the house. She started with digital, but got
into film during her college years. From there she had
shoot film and switch to digital when it was the right time.
As she stated in wmagazine “If I could shoot film and only
film I would; there's something magical about it and it
always seems to make me fall in love with photo all over
again.”

7. Ethics
◦ Renell ethical dilemmas was when she went to
the, Dominican Republic where her family was
from to take pictures. She didn’t know where or
how to start and she was only there for a week.
She felt so beat that she couldn’t figure it out.
As she states in vogue.co.uk “It was
overwhelming, I didn't know where to start.”
She also stated “It felt like a week wasn’t
enough.” She wanted to make sure she
captured as much as she can. Because she
didn’t know where she was going or looking for
it was hard to create in just a short period of
time.

8. Bias
◦ Her bias was that she liked film more and if she could she
do that more often for her work. She only likes to take
pictures of fashion and art about culture more then
finding different things. She tends to focus also a lot more
on woman to give them what they go through in life.

9. PHOTOGRAPHIC STYLEAll these pictures that I picked from her profile that has an photographic style. The first picture is
consist of texture because of the tress and oh they would feel rough. The second photo consist with
keep it simple. She just has an person sitting on the ground with no movement and just stranded still.
The third photo reminds me of contrast appropriate because the contrast consist a calm lovely feeling.
The last but not least photo consist of black and white because of the how the photo is taken.

10. IMPACT
Her photos impacted the world because a lot of
people were connected to her lifestyle. She has
change the way of taking photographs and
exploring in a whole new way. As stated in sleek-
mg.com “Medrano is part of a new generation of young
black image-makers who create photos that straddle art
and fashion with a broader set of intentions.” It also
states “Moving away from the traditional pursuit of
glamour, they are telling stories of social and political
inclusivity, advocating for a wider celebration of beauty
and the self – a powerful antidote for a group previously
marginalized in mainstream fashion and culture.”

11. MY MAJOR AT
AIC
The work that Renell did can relate a lot to my
major and my personal goals. It relates to my
major because she took photos and did filming.
Around the same age as I fell in love with
photography and videography. Her career
matches also because I want to be able to travel
on my own. I want to take pictures or make
music video and movies of every celebrity I look
up too.

12. Viewpoints
◦ She was view by a lot of people and many had different
answers. Even though they was different they still mean
the same thing. People view on her work was more like a
change and a revolution. People believe she trying to
change the game where photographers can go out and
take pictures and being free to express what you believe.
People are amazed at her career and work that they
believe her and a few others will change the world.
