3. PRIMARY RESEARCH
For my primary research I asked participants about their opinions through a short questionnaire. Surveys are used to learn about
a general trend in people’s opinions, experiences, and behavior. Surveys are particularly useful to find small amounts of
information from a wider selection of people. One of the greatest challenges in conducting surveys is writing good questions.
Such as asking about One thing at a Time. A poorly written question can contain multiple questions, which can confuse
participants or lead them to answer only part of the question you are asking. This is called a “double-barreled question” in
journalism. A leading question is one where you prompt the participant to respond in a particular way, which can create bias in
the answers given. Closed questions, or questions that have yes/no or other limited responses, should be used in surveys.
However, these kinds of questions discourage the participant from going into depth. The “why or why not?” portion of the
question asks the participant to elaborate. When you write questions, make sure they are clear, concise, and to the point.
Questions that are too long, use unfamiliar vocabulary, or are unclear may confuse participants and you will not get quality
responses.
Before I create my magazine, I need to work out who my target audience is and what they would like to see in my magazine, I
created a questionnaire, this included five questions, I distributed them out to four participants, with the feedback I had received
I gathered the information into pie charts. I did this to see what my target audience prefers.

5. SECONDARY RESEARCH
• For my secondary research into my target audience, I have decided to
produce a music magazine. My magazine will cover mostly indie music.
I will be researching into the indie music genre as well as the audience. I
will conduct my research by looking at websites, published statistics over
recent years to see common trends and also investigate psychographic
information. This information will then enable me to make a successful
music magazine.
6. INDIE MUSIC
Below are the most popular indie artists who are searched using the ‘Google’ search engine.
This shows that indie music is most commonly presented in male groups. I can further extend
my research by looking into their target audience to see who is listening to their music, buying
their products and going to their concerts.
7. MUSIC MAGAZINES
There are many indie music magazines on the market, that can be bought from any
local
supermarket, music shop and online, examples of these are above. I can use ideas
from
them such as their house styles, images and layout as inspiration for my own music
magazine.
8. WEBSITES
• I used websites to research into the target audience for the indie music
genre, The websites I used are linked below. After reading and gathering
information, I have established the age of my target audience.
• It was shown through the website NME, which is a magazine, that the most
popular audience for indie pop music is an "intensely engaged audience of
16-24 year olds". It also showed that 66% of the people that listened to this
music were male, and 34% of them were female, showing that the mean age
of the audience will be 24.
• This ultimately shows that the target audience for indie pop music will be
male of gender, and aged around 16-24. My research shows that the
audience gender is equally split into 50/50.
9. PSYCHOGRAPHIC PROFILING
• Ideologies of my Target Audience
• Going to music festivals and gigs are a frequent pass-time, as well as
listening to music on the go. Going shopping, likely to enjoy indie films,
plays an instrument. The audience is likely to have views on politics and
believe in the idea of freedom of speech and expression. Shops in
places, such as; Urban Outfitters, ASOS and HMV. Spends their internet
time social media platforms such Instagram and Tumblr.
10. CONTRIBUTORS
• My my music magazine, I have decided
to use secondary images. the models I
will be using the local band ‘Infernal
Bloom’. I have decided to use this band
because they appeal to the indie music
audience. To be able to use them in my
magazine I will be needing their
permission, as well as the
photographers permission to use their
images. I did this by asking them
through direct message, through their
popular social media platform. This
permission allows me the right to use
them in my magazine.
11. LOCATION
• The photographs I have the rights and
permission to use are taken at one of
the bands concerts. There were many
images to choose from but after
researching into indie music magazine
front covers, I have chosen images
that are very eye catching and has a
similar house style to the rest of my
magazine.
12. EQUIPMENT
• The equipment used to take the
images includes a good quality
camera.
• The camera used is the Canon EOS
4000D DSLR Camera Body with 18-
55mm Lens. This camera easily creates
distinctive shots and quality photos.
13. PITCH
• I have decided to create a digital music magazine, focusing primarily on the indie pop music genre.
My magazine is based around the local band ‘Infernal Bloom’ which correlates with my chosen
genre. My magazine includes professional photographs taken by Jane Thwaites photography who
runs is local business specialising in band photography. I have gained permission to use. The house
style I have used includes a colour scheme of white and red, this makes my magazine look is
affective and eye catching to my target audience.
• My target audience includes the intensely engaged audience of 16-24 year olds who are equally split
in 50% female and 50% male. The Ideologies of my audience includes going to music festivals and
gigs are a frequent pass-time, as well as listening to music on the go. Going shopping and likely
to enjoy indie films. The audience is likely to have views on politics and believe in the idea of
freedom of speech and expression. Shops in places, such as; Urban Outfitters, ASOS and
HMV. Spends their internet time social media platforms such Instagram and Tumblr.
• My magazine will contain relevant material featured in a music magazine. This includes popular and
new artists and bands, up to date fashion and indie influenced films. The aims for my magazine will
be to inform and entertain my target audience appealing to the indie pop genre.

• For my image, the location where the picture was taken was recently at ‘Pop Recs Sunderland’. This location is primarily and
popularly used to host artist and band gigs.
• The gig was planned by the band and the photography and I scheduled to photograph the event, to use for her business and my
digital magazine. The equipment used to take the images was a professional canon camera and a 18-55mm lens. the performance
used lighting on stage so not extra lighting equipment was needed.
• I appropriately chose my images for the purpose to be eye catching towards my target audience, indie pop genre and purpose of
my magazine. I wanted the images to correspond with my house style, this includes the colour scheme, text size, colour and font
and other additional elements that make my magazine appealing.

18. THE TREATMENT
• The flat plan designs I have created for my front cover and double page spread relates to the requirements of the
brief because I have created a magazine layout aimed at the youth market. My magazine features new ideas for
presenting information through a easy to understand layout. I have produced a front cover and double page spread
to illustrate my idea for a new indie music magazine. The platform I have decided to distribute my magazine through
the retailer HMV since the shop specializes in music and film. My magazine targets a specific audience, purpose and
platform which reflects onto the content of my magazine.
• I have made these production decisions on my flat plan designs for my front cover and double page spread since the
layout is easy to read as well as being informative. The house style makes my layout attractive to the reader, using
black, white and red which corresponds with my main image. The fonts I used for my headlines are Closter Black from
Frontspace.com. I chose this font because it is bold and distinctive, which makes my magazine pop. The colour I used
is white, which contrasts again the black background. The language I used throughout both magazine layouts is
persuasive and appropriate for my target audience. It features informal as well as formal language.
• My flat plan design for my front cover appeals to my target audience because of the main image I have used, which
corresponds with the house style. The main image’s cinematography and mise en scene used makes the image is
appealing and professional looking, this was achieved using a low angle shot the lighting to create depth and
highlighting the models expressions, to really make the image stand out. The models facial expression, and use of the
microphone shows he is passionate about his music. This appeals to my target audience since the psychographics of
my audience show that they enjoy going to gigs and that is where the location of the image is set.
• My flat plan design for my double page spread appeals to my target audience because of the main image I have used.
The image uses dark colours which relates to my house style for my magazine. The shadows, which was achieved
using natural lighting, makes the three members of the band stand out against the light background. Each model has
a different facial expression and stance, shows characteristics in each member.
19. PREPARE CONTENT
• My articles will be about the band infernal bloom, including an interview.
I will be editing the font to be white, to contrast against the black
background and using formal language. I will be checking grammar
spelling and clarity while writing my article. Selecting appropriate file
formats, file sizes and the image quality of visual material.
• I received my images through direct messaging the photographer I
decided to contact. I imported my images onto Photoshop to correct
and them to match the house style I wanted to achieve.
