2. Quebec City
• Located in North-Eastern
Quebec in the Saint-
Lawrence River valley
• 2 ½ hour drive from
Montreal
• Population: 765 000
• Average high temperature:
22°C to 25°C
• Average low temperature: -
13°C to -18°C
• Last major earthquake: 1663
Charlevoix earthquake with a
moment magnitude of
between 7.3 and 7.9
3. 4 Storey Office Building
Design according to National Building Code of Canada (NBCC 2010) and the Canadian Standard for Design
and Construction of Steel Building (CSA-S16-09).
Plan Dimensions: Length = 55m, Width = 30m
First Floor Height: 5.8m
Typical Storey Height: 3.75m
Total Elevation: 17.05m (low-rise)
CBF’s on either side of building to resist lateral loads (wind & earthquake)
2 staircases: East & West side of building
Designed the office building by determining the live, dead, snow, wind, and earthquake load that the
structure must resist under specific conditions that vary in Quebec City.
Also designed the CBF’s to satisfy safety standards.
AutoCAD for the structural and architectural drawings.
ETABS for analysis of the structure.
4. Assumptions
Dead Load Calculation: 10% steel allowance
Importance Factor, I: 1.0 (normal building)
Open terrain environment
CBF stiffness, K = 1
Building is situated on top of very dense soil and soft rocks -> Class C
No storage load for each floor
Considered the beams as laterally supported

Editor's Notes
In order to design the cbf on etabs,
We took the tension compression option with the parameter of Rd Ro we assigned seimtic data on etbas
In the center of the floor, there is a security desk. In the north end, there are the washrooms. The staircases are located on the east and west center and it applies for all floors. There is a coffee shop located in the bottom left corner.
This is the floor plan for storey 2 and above, In the center of the floor, there are 128 cubical offices, 2 general manager office rooms and 10 office rooms along the south wall. Along the North wall, 2 washrooms, 2 lunch rooms, 2 conference rooms, an electrical room and a store room. 2 reception areas are located next to the staircases.
