2. WHAT IS….?
…EQUALITY?
Everyone is treated as equal
Everybody has access to the same opportunities
and is protected against discrimination.
…DISCRIMINATION?
Discrimination should be defined as one person, or
a group of persons, being treated less favourably
than another on the grounds of racial or ethnic
origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual
orientation.
3. …DIVERSITY?
Valuing everyone as equal – valuing people as
pupils, teachers, clients, colleagues.
Respecting the uniqueness of individuals – Of
Every Individual.
4. EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY STARTS WITH US
Addressing Equality and Diversity involves the
establishment of equal access to, and the
participation in, education for all people no matter
what sex, race, religion or their disability status.
Some of these groups may not be familiar to us and
we may not have previously encountered them in
our daily lives
Yet, we WILL work and learn alongside them.
5.
This diagram illustrates simply
how a combination of early
messages, images and views
influence our values, beliefs,
attitudes and ultimately
behaviour.
Every day we display, and
see in others, behaviour and
sometimes attitudes – the top
two layers of the iceberg.
However we don’t usually see
the underlying aspects of a
person.
6. SO NOW WE NOW WE HAVE
SEEN THAT DIVERSITY AND
EQUALITY BEGINS WITH US,
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
7. By
examining our own attitudes and values
we can begin to challenge our own
behaviour, and the behaviour of others, that
some people may find abusive or offensive.
By increasing our own knowledge and
understanding of people we can become
better people, who are more respected.
8. With
freedom and diversity comes a need to
respect difference!
Do you want to live in a world where we
can be who we want to be, listen to the
music we like, eat the foods we enjoy,
dress how we like to dress, etc?
Then we must remember that the person
next to us has the freedom and right to do
the same.
And they are very likely to be different...

"Diversity is not about how we
differ. Diversity is about
embracing one another's
uniqueness." Ola Joseph
―We are all different, which is
great because we are all
unique. Without diversity life
would be very boring."

10. ―Equality is not a concept. It's not something we
should be striving for. It's a necessity. Equality is
like gravity. We need it to stand on this earth as
men and women, and the misogyny that is in every
culture is not a true part of the human condition. It
is life out of balance, and that imbalance is sucking
something out of the soul of every man and woman
who's confronted with it. We need equality. Kinda
now.‖
― Joss Whedon
