Factors Contributing To
Degradation
Group 1: Alayon, Aguro, Aliste, Amante, Barbosa
What is
Degradation?
Degradation is a process that
renders an object useless or less
useful over time. Degradation can be
caused by many different means,
and it is almost always considered
an undesirable process. Preventing
and combating the degradation of a
part, product or structure is a major
challenge that many engineers face.
Exposure to
moisture
When metal is exposed to any type of
moisture — even humidity in the air —
the iron atoms in the metal react with
the oxygen molecules in the air to form
iron oxide, also known as rust. Rust can
occur on any iron-containing metal,
including steel, iron, and cast iron.
Chemicals
The main chemical degradation
parameters that influence the
hydrolysis rate are the control of pH,
temperature, the presence of metal
ions and dissolved organic matter.
Thus, polar pesticides show higher
degradation rates compared to non-
polar pesticides, due to their higher
water solubility.
Temperature
Exposure to high temperatures can
cause chemical degradation of
composite-matrix polymers. Thermal
degradation usually implies chemical
reactions associated with polymer chain
scission as a result of temperature or
diffusion of small molecules.
Mechanical
Stress
Mechanical Stress is a measure of
internal resistance exhibited by a
body or material when an external
force is applied to it. There are many
types of stress that can occur
including: shear stress, compressive
stress, tensile stress, and torsional
stress.
Electrochemical
reactions
Electrochemical degradation is a kind of
AOP technology that has also been
widely used in sewage treatment and is
suitable for low-volume applications due
to its good environmental compatibility.
Furthermore, the electrode can
generate strong oxidizing active
substances to remove pollutants 62.
