NARRATIVE–
The “STORYEFFECT”of thecut.
1. STRAIGHT CUT – THE PICTURE LINES UP WITH
AUDIO, BEGINS AND ENDS SAME PLACE.
2. “J” CUT – The AUDIO associate with PICTURE leads
the cut (is cut first, new audio comes in first)
3. “L” CUT – PICTURE leads the cut, a new image comes
in yet AUDIO from last PICTURE trails behind, still
heard as new IMAGE comes in.
4. JUMP CUT – A clip is either cut into itself, or a cut is
made and the new clip coming in is not different enough
in camera position, angle and subject – so it appears the
subject “jumps” in time.
5. TRANSITIONS – Dissolves, Fades, Fade In, Wipes,
Zoom IN/OUT, Shape Wipes

6. MATCHING ACTION CUT - A cut that makes
discontinuous action look/feel continuous: Clip A starts an
action, Clip B finishes the action.
7. SHAPE MATCH CUT – Using identical or similar shapes to
take you from one clip to the next clip/scene.
8. AUDIO SEGUE – Using a similar (or in some cases
dissimilar) sound to take you to the next scene’s action.
9. CROSS CUTTING – A series of cuts of two or more different
events happening simultaneously, inter-cut to keep the
audience oriented
10. INSERT – EXTREME CLOSE UP of what a character
might be doing/holding with their hands, or specific details we
need for story or meaning.
