2. What is PTSD?
PTSD stands for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
It occurs after someone has undergone a very
stressful, mentally scarring time and is unable to
recover from said events. A very common place to
see it is in Veterans after returning home from war.
Triggers can recall the very moments and memories
of these events, which can happen at any place and
any moment in a person’s day.
An estimated of 8% of the population suffer from
PTSD. That is equal to 24.4 million people or the
population of Texas.
3. Brothers
Brothers is a movie about PTSD.
A husband, brother, and father named
Sam, fights in Afghanistan, where he
eventually goes missing with one of his
fellow soldiers. He was captured by the
enemy and soon, they pronounce him dead
when neither soldiers can be found.
Due to his death, his brother Tommy tries
to fill the gap in Sam’s family as a father
and husband. The widow, and the brother
end up getting close.
4. Brothers cont.
It turns out that Sam was not dead, but
forced to do the unthinkable when he
was held hostage. He had to kill his
fellow soldier with his bare hands.
When he returns home, Sam isn’t
himself. He returned with severe PTSD
because of the traumatic events he had
endured.
He has major paranoia when he
accuses his wife and brother of an affair,
and lashes out at them in anger.
Eventually, Sam can not handle the
attention and overwhelming thoughts he
has lead himself to believe.
5. Brothers cont.
In this movie, everyone is treating Sam like
the hero he is, but in reality, he feels like he is
anything but. This causes him to have more
anger, guilt, and depression.
This leads him to thoughts of suicide and
almost committing the act in his front yard,
with his wife, brother, and police trying to talk
him down.
Before he gets arrested, he looks at his
brother and speaks the words “I’m drowning,
Tommy” as a sign that he needed help.
6. Connection
Sam had returned home with obvious signs of PTSD.
He came home a completely different person, lashing
out at his wife and his family, making his kids fear him
and not want to be around him.
Because of his family losing connection to him and
being scared of him, Sam was able to see things as
he did and in the wrong light.
Sam constantly filling his own head with dishonest
thoughts added to his PTSD. With his lack of help
and guilt to not talk about it only added to the trauma.
He became more angry as the days went by taking it
out on his wife.
Sam’s inability to cope with his traumatic events
makes him unable to ask for help until the very end
when he almost ended his life.
When Sam finally got help, he felt safe enough to talk
to his wife and tell her what happened.
