An early mechanical CCTV system was developed in 1927 by Russian physicist Léon Theremin, and CCTV was invented by Walter Bruch in 1942 and first used in Germany to monitor V-2 rockets during World War 2. CCTV did not become commercially available until 1949, seven years after its wartime use.
