Lynwol Apartments in Hope Street, Cape Town
is a multi-storey apartment block that had fallen
in disrepair in the last couple of years.
The building required massive surgery repairs
that included waterproofing, spalling concrete
and plaster repairs. These repairs has resulted
in crazed plaster and mapping visible on the
external facades and by applying Sheerflex as a
top coat we were able to eradicate most of
these unsightly repairs.
Blackland Painters has done a phenomenal job
in dealing with all the repairs that will allow
longevity of the coatings specified for this
project. We recommended applying Dekroseal
(Waterbased masonry primer) as a base coat
and Sheerflex (Acrylic emulsion) which is a
flexible waterproofing coating as the top coat.
Fernwood Estate is a large development on the Old
Sir Lowry Road in Somerset West. Enviro Living
Solutions is currently busy painting houses on the
estate with Afri Flex (A flexible, textured coating
with excellent water resistance) and the boundary
walls with Super Fibretex (Low dirt retention
waterproofing coating).
Afri Flex is a flexible, textured coating with excellent water resistance. Afri Flex should be
used where outstanding durability and waterproofing properties are required. Afri Flex is
designed to cover hair cracks on old and crazed plaster.

Painting during the winter months is quite
possible if the following items are considered.
Dew Points – Coatings should not be
applied to metal if the temperature of
the metal is less than 3°C above the
dew point.
Air Temperature –Most of our acrylic
coatings should not be applied if the air
temperature is below 4°C and the drying
times will increase as the temperature
decreases.
Wet Surfaces – During the
winter months dew and
moisture will be prevalent and
will only evaporate once the sun heats up the
various surfaces. Therefor we recommend that
coatings only be applied after 10:00am in the
mornings depending on air temperatures.
Contaminated Surfaces – Dew
and mist may contain surface
contaminates and intermediate
rinsing with fresh water is recommended
between and before coatings are applied.
Coatings must never be applied if intermittent
rain is forecast.

The maintenance crew at The
Fountains Hotel in Cape Town has
recently undertaken upgrades to their
parking areas within the building. The
floors had to be coated with an epoxy
to allow cleaning staff to clean these
surfaces more efficiently. The parking
area was not very conducive to receive
coatings due to oil and diesel spillage
and areas previously coated with
bitumen products.
Cleaning the floors was essential, but prior to that
they used a concrete floor grinder to remove 2mm
off the top concrete layer.
The floors were washed with a wunda clean solution
and then high pressure jetted to remove all surface
contaminates. After the floor dried sufficiently they
applied a single coat of Bannoh 500 (surface tolerant
epoxy) followed by two coats of Epicon Marine Finish.
BANNOH 500, is a multi-purpose primer, which gives excellent physical properties such as
toughness, abrasion resistance and adhesion, and has excellent flexibility, resistance to
water and cathodic protection.
