14. Self-concept is an organisation or patterning
of attitudes, habits, knowledge, drives and the
like and cementing together of all these
complex components.
WHAT IS SELF-CONCEPT…
15. Self Concept-A Reality Filter
• Self Concept screens out what we do not want
to hear and see and passes through what we do
want to see and hear.
• Example of a businessman in two different
situations.
• Example of photographers.

anything you don’t
understand.”

18. Continuing changes
• Old order changeth yielding place to new.
• Change in behaviour = Change in Self-
Concept.
• What Problem do Managers come
across…
• Nothing significant may happen but still a
change may ensue.
• Changes can become a continuum .
19. Linchpin for growth
• Subtle impact is called for
Manager Development.
• Change in Self Concept.
• Such a change is difficult.
• Growth is painful,change is
painful,but nothing is as
painful as staying stuck
somewhere you don’t
belong.
20.
21. Squabble in Self -
Concept
• Each human being
is several selves.
• Disparity in Self-
Concept.
• The human
conscious.
• Many problems
arise.
• An individual
himself becomes
his greatest
hurdle.
22. Pseudo Self- Concept
• How I see myself V/s How others
see me.
• Uncounted misfits.
• “Who am I” & “Who I think I am.”
• Pay –off.
• Grow old gracefully.
• It isn’t what you know that finally
counts; its who you are.
23. He is democratic,attentive to
others, soft-spoken, unlikely
to “order”, always likely to
“suggest”.

for”, “Nobody
knows whether
I’m doing well or
poorly”,”We
haven’t any
system to follow
in service to
customers.
24. “Unsure of himself as
an administrator, a
stimulator,
coordinator of his

are waiting for you to
clear the air.They will
follow any
organisational plan you
want them to.This step
you can only take.They
respect you and want
your leadership.They
value you . Don’t ask
them; tell them for
goodness’s sake, how
you’re going to
organise their
activities”

Change
• Is change in Self –Concept
possible???
• Why executives think that
effort in this regard is
futile???
• Effect when mature people
change.
• Effect when executives
change.
28. • First step is self
examination
• Individual get an
inkling to change
their behaviour
• Preparation for
insight
• Insight precede
change in
behaviour
• Self examination
Insight
Growth
29. • Second step is self
expectation
• Individual realise the
direction in which
they want to grow
• New demands are set
up themselves
• Leads to constructive
growth
• Out of insight comes
change in self-
expectation
30. • Third step is self-direction
• Take charge of their own development
• Strength of their desire is enough for growth
• As learning is impossible without motivation,
Growth/ development is impossible unless we seek it
• Intrinsic motivation

relation to
environment, both
personal and
impersonal
• Develop image in

• Overcome
constraints of self-
concept

selves could be and
grow into that
• Means “ Fulfilling
one’s destiny”
• Recognize
unrealized power
• Difference between
strong person and
weak person lies in
self-concept
33. • The more realistic one’s view of oneself, the more
guaranteed is personal effectiveness.
• Effective consistent behaviour is integrated behavior,
while unintegrated behavior is the behavior of conflict.
• Mature people resist change.
• The power to “see the real me”
• Realization of self image
• The “I” behind the face in the mirror
• Self concept is prerequisite for growth.
• Growth: Evolvement of personal goals and the sense of
venture in pursuing them
