September – Washington Arts Centre
This networking experience was with the employees of Washington Arts Centre.
The Washington Arts Centre is a location owned by Sunderland Culture. Sunderland culture is an
organisation which that what to bring more culture and bring the
community together through their art exhibitions and activity
classes they hold in serval locations. Sunderland Culture was
created in 2016 and have partnered with many local business and
Sunderland University in order to help create art exhibitions for
the community all around Sunderland. Sunderland Culture was
founded by Sunderland city council as they decided that they need
an organisation that help culture the community and bring many of the members together as they
want to help modernise the Northeast of England.
From the tour around the building, I found out the hold many art exhibitions, art classes, fitness
classes and many more activities for the community around Washington. They told us about how
the art centre use to be a stable and they have kept a lot of the same textures of bricks from the
old structure to give the building more of stables look to not forgets its history.
I also got told all about how they want to have more younger generations of the community to
join in more so they can help culture more of the community.
From this visit I have learnt a lot more about the industry as they explained how they get clients in
and how they are able to hold so many exhibitions as they relay on up coming artist how want to
show their art pieces to the public to donate their pieces but also, they will organise events and if
anyone who wants to enter an art piece is allowed in.
This helps me as I know if I decide to give into the media or film industry there are places that I
can enter my artwork or film work in for free just to gain publicity and make people interested in
my work.
This helps me to think about potential careers for me as I loved the idea of helping people gain
their foot in the door of the art and media world. I was very interested in Dans job as he helps a
lot with advertising these types of exhibitions and events and he helps organises them to help the
community if they wish to go into certain careers.
From this experience I believe I know a lot more about facilities and opportunities available to me
as they explained a lot how easy it is to get work into an exhibition and how it is most of the time
free as they are more of a charity-based company.
