Personal Statement
In our daily routines, media has a precise and foundational integrity that every one of us can
depend on. I have developed an unshakable passion for media subjects to study at a higher
level, it only feels natural to indulge in my passion even Futher. Film is my main passion
within the industry, as it can be used to create a brand-new world for the audience. Joss
Whedon was also a great impact on me when I first saw his Avenger's movie as he was able
to create a world for the audience but also, he showed the emotions of the characters
through the sound, their emotions and the cinematography.
Over the course of my creative media course, I have acquired a broad range of media-related
skills. Most of the course is spent actively producing our own media products, which can
range from photography, posters, and adverts to documentaries. As a result, I have learned
Photoshop, Premier Pro and DaVinci as well as the codes and conventions utilised by various
genres. I can now confidently analyse media texts while providing creative and unique
insight. In college I have worked on briefs for companies such as Canon, Mind, BBC and
Sunderland Culture, for us to have experience of working for a client and fulfilling their
requirement. For each project I would always create a video or a documentary product for
the client as I believed it was the best but also to expand my skill of the software. It has also
helped me develop skills such as time management, organisation, team working and working
under pressure.
I am not stranger in responsibility as I help care for my younger siblings alongside work
experience, film production group and completing college work on time. I am used to mulit-
tasking on multiple projects at a time and this has helped me to become more dependable
and more organised with my work and time. From my course, I have gained the knowledge
of the number of responsibilities that Producers and Directors have on a set, but also the
pre-production side, they must think of how they are able to film safely but also how to
make the narrative work.
At college I was lucky enough to be able to do work experience with Washington Art Centre
which helped me to refine my skills in media production as they wanted many different
forms of media created for their company, such as blog posts, events, a documentary and
short video content. This has really helped with my confidence, creating media products and
seeing how the public reacts to the posts and content is really fulfilling. I also had to
opportunity to work with Alistair Cummings a northeast director and producer in creating a
short horror film to enter in festivals apart of work experience but from his workshops they
have gave a lot more knowledge of post-production but also the media industry.
I have thought a lot about my future in the film and media industry and I can easily see
myself as a Producer or a Director. These roles give me a way to have a creative output but
also gives the structure I desire. Joss Whedon has inspired me to take these roles in the
industry as he has created amazing worlds and stories but also to make them have a realistic
take upon life and show how hard but beautiful it is. He’s created amazing pieces of media
throughout his career which has inspired me that I could do the same and inspire more
people to be involved in the film industry.
I am confident if I am placed on this course, I will be able to go far into the industry as I
already have the basic knowledge of the working of behind the camera and how an idea is
turned into a product, but I believe this course will benefit me as there is much more to learn
about the industry and the experience this course offers me will be very beneficial for my
future. As I have much experience of creating film and media products therefore, I will be an
excellent addition to this course as I have the knowledge, but also have the hands-on
experience with cameras, editing software, sound, lighting and much more to offer.
