Panic! At The Disco – Nine In
The Afternoon

Genre Characteristics
 In the video for Nine in The Afternoon by Panic! At The Disco, there are several different settings. For
each band member there is a different primary colour bedroom and an unrelated other setting for
example lead singer Brendon wakes up in a red bedroom and when he leaves the room, he and the rest
of the band are ambushed by women in old fashioned dresses.
 The video is mostly disjunctive as they settings in the video don’t correspond to the lyrics in any way
however all the clocks in the video say 9 o’clock and when the video is set outside it’s still daytime which
references the name of the song.
 There is a lot of movement and energy conveyed in the video which is very typical of a indie rock music
video.
 There is also no band name in the video like there was for Fall Out Boy however the video begins with
the name of the album they’re promoting Pretty Odd.
 The video also sells the album because the events are unrelated and bizarre which links back to the
album title.
Lyrics & Music and their relationship with the visuals
 The video is contradicting and so there is no relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. The
events in the video are described as ‘bizarre’.
 The music is very upbeat and happy which resonates in the video as the video is happy, upbeat
and positive. The video is heavily influenced by the Beatles, specifically the strange parade
through the streets which looks to be inspired by Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Emphasis on looking & voyeurism
The band in the video are not made out to be objects to be looked at and are made to look
attractive with formal suits and such. They are, instead, dressed in pyjamas or whacky outfits
and having fun in wild and bizarre situations.
Camera shots and visual style
There is a consistent use of close ups to establish the band members and also for performance.
The video tries to create different identities for each band member with them waking up in a
different coloured room and walking into different strange settings. Most of the performance
segments of the video are either the lead singer Brendon on his own or the parade through the
street however the video ends with a performance from the band as a whole gathered with others
from the parade as a congregation.
Intertextual References
 The video and also the band’s music has many references and is heavily influenced by The
Beatles e.g. Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
 The video is mainly a disjunctive video that follows the idea of a bizarre set of events that
take place featuring the band.
