Constance Stein, Innovation Manager of the Otto Group
Blockchain is dead, long live blockchain. After the crypto-craze the question remains if there is any potential in blockchain for retailers. My talk will show how the Otto Group identified use cases, enabled colleagues to discuss use cases and translate them into prototypes.
Constance Stein is Innovation Manager of the Otto Group, one oft he world’s largest online retailers with online sales of 7.9 billion euros. She continuously tracks down innovations in customer service and fintech to advise companies such as OTTO, bonprix and Hermes on the implementation of innovative projects. WE DO OUR RESEARCH
WE CHALLENGE OURSELVES
WE BUILD PROTOTYPES
WE COLLABORATE
AND THAT‘S WHAT WE DO…

So, I work in Innovation Management and a part of my work is desk research. Screening and prioritizing new technologies that could be valuable for ecommerce and for the otto group. Conferences to learn etc

2015 I stumbled over the term bitcoin when visiting a barcamp at the university of Kiel and I thought “Hum, I should look that up. I would like to mine bitcoins, sounds like a such a rebellious thing to do.” But…I never did. Fast forward to years later
The term „Blockchain“ describes protocolls documenting and encrypting transactions, enabling
Transactions are everywhere: money, information, ownership…basically retail
Compare this to „searches for bitcoin“ and the blue line resembles a flatline---talk about cryptocraze

As I already mentioned, the Group comprises 123 major companies and does business in over 30 countries
Its business activities are grouped into three segments: Multichannel Retail, Financial Services, and Service
E-commerce, catalogue sales and over-the-counter (OTC) retail form the three pillars of the Otto Group’s Multichannel Retail activities
Worldwide corporate activities, numerous strategic partnerships and joint ventures provide the Otto Group with excellent opportunities to transfer know-how and leverage areas of synergy potential
Group companies operate largely independently, guaranteeing flexibility, customer proximity and optimum target-group appeal in their respective national markets
Founded in Germany in 1949, today the Otto Group is a globally active group of retailers and retail-related service providers with around 51,800 employees and sales of 13.7 billion euros
Through 123 major companies, it has a presence in more than 30 countries in Europe, North and South America as well as Asia

But what does the blockchain ecosystem really look like in Germany after 2017? To answer this question, BTC-ECHO and BlockState conducted a comprehensive study. 180 German blockchain start-ups were included, of which more than 100 took part in our survey. https://www.btc-echo.de/blockchain-study-ecosystem-germany-2018/

Enough desk research
Blockchain still in early stages
Infrastructure + collaboration needed
Certain use cases

So does it mean retailers are already too late? Yes, too late to hop on to the pr-train but just right get working, to develop use cases and a technical understanding of different protocols and to collaborate.
Industrie/Cross-Industrieaustausch -> eine Erklärung reicht nicht, man muss es mehrmals hören
Mit KGs/Teams -> Bedarfsanalyse

UseCase Workshops
With every other technology, like ai, ar/vr, conversational commerce…
Thank you, really looking forward to alle the other interessting sessions today
