We wish to dedicate the 2014 Vermont Professional Photographers

A Message from Our President
Welcome to the 85th Annual Vermont Professional Photographers
Convention! 85 years ago the 1st telephone was installed in the White
House, Ansel Adams was just starting out, the 1st color TV was demoed,
Babe Ruth became the 1st to hit 500 homers, and the stock market crashed
triggering the “Great Depression”. A lot has changed over the past 85
years and not just within the world we live in, but within our organization
as well. While at times we may feel like we are struggling and just hanging
on, we have proven that neither the digital age nor the “Uncle Bobs” will
make professional photographers obsolete. Instead we grow, we learn,
and we adapt in order to continue forward. And though we may have a
smaller group than we had in our heyday, we have a strong group of
professionals that are dedicated to perfecting their craft and cultivating
relationships with their fellow professionals. I believe that that is more
important than lowering the standards of our organization in order to
boost membership numbers.
This past year has been yet another wonderful experience on the VPP
Board. My extreme gratitude is extended to each of my board members
for their time and commitment to the running of our fine organization.
Without each of our board members we would be lacking in the quality
education and meetings that allow us to learn from one another as well as
professionals from around the world.
I hope that you enjoy your time at the convention this year and take home
not only some new ideas but some great memories as well. I look forward
to spending time in conversation and education with you over the next year
with the Vermont Professional Photographers.
Kindly, Kathleen

PPA National Award
The National Award is offered by the Professional Photographers of
America to State, Regional, National & International affiliated organizations on
a yearly basis. First made available in 1958, the award recognizes those persons
who generously contribute their time and talents to the service of their
profession, their affiliated organization, and their fellow photographers.
Selections of the award are determined by the recipient’s peers, which adds to
its distinction and value.
The choice of the recipient is left to the individual state, regional, and national
affiliates. It may be given to a member or non-member, to someone in or
outside the field of professional photography. It need not be awarded every
year if no suitable candidate is found. The award will be presented at the
VPP’s annual awards function.
The selection of a new recipient is made by the VPP National Award Committee
which is composed of all living recipients of this award from the VPP.
The first National Award ever presented by VPP was to
Eudora (Dot) Patch of Randolph, Vermont in 1959.

Code of Ethics
Bi-Monthly Meetings
The purposes of the organization are to raise the standards of photography,
both professionally and ethically, and to create, foster, promote and maintain
cordial relations and exchange knowledge among its members. Our bi-monthly
meetings feature seminars and workshops by guest speakers on specified
topics. Our yearly print critique gives our members opportunities for feed-
back on new work. The annual convention is an in-depth opportunity to learn,
compare notes, receive honors, relax and have fun together.
1. The practice of photography, both as a science and as an art, is worthy
of the very best thought and endeavor of all who enter it as a vocation.
2. Our fellow photographer’s name and reputation shall be as sacred to
us as our own.
3. No untrue or misleading statements shall be made, in any way, in any
form, in business promotions.
4. It shall be our duty to impart freely of our knowledge so that photography
among our members may be raised to higher standards.
5. It shall be our duty, individually, to strive to serve the public to the very
best of our ability in all matters pertaining to photography.

12 Elements of a Merit Print
	 • Impact - What you see first. What holds your eye. What demands
your attention. What commands you to look.
	 • Creativity -	Originality. A fresh approach.
Creative subject, cropping, design, invention, feeling, etc.
	 • Style -	Your style reflects your vision. Artistic expression and
uniqueness of execution
	• Composition -	Harmonious arrangements. Placement of subject matter.
Using dynamic symmetry to place the most important
objects within a space. Good rhythm is created by repetition,
whether it is color, space, lines, moods, or divisions of
the photograph.
	• Presentation -	Dare to be different. The presentation enhances the
photograph. Does the cropping add to the composition?
Does the matting and mounting compliment and support
the image?
	• Color Balance - Creative use of color - examples: complimentary colors,
dark against light, strong against weak. Interpretive,
primary, secondary, tertiary, aggressive and receding colors.
	• Center Of Interest - Subject matter holds the eye. The main subject is
arranged so that one center of interest prevails. Secondary
points are also important to the photograph, but shouldn’t
be distracting.
	 • Lighting -	Lighting is the art of photography. It creates the mood,
reproduces the characteristics of the subjects, and makes a
statement. Good directional lighting is essential. Without
it, photography lacks strength and definition.
	• Subject Matter- Interpretation of the subject matter. Selection of the
subject. Treatment can be very creative: young and old,
warm and cool. The camera angle for the subject is important.
	• Print Quality -	Details in the highlights and shadows. Using the middle
tones. Good color balance. Good strong contrast.
Background in key with the subject.
	 • Technique -	Technique is the foundation of creative photography. How
well all the elements are assembled and combined. Different
treatments for the subject matter. Knowledge of art principles
is important. Breaking the rules can be a good technique
only if the follow through is purposeful with forethought.
	• Story Telling -	Every picture should tell a story and be able to be understood
in just a moment or two. The reason for the photograph and
the statement it is making. The achievement of a purpose
helps build an emotional response which challenges the
viewers imaginations and views.

studio since 1992. Best described as a photographic artist,
Ed prides himself in creating beautiful storytelling-images
that capture feelings and evoke heartfelt emotions. He
has been honored to receive a wide array of photographic
awards including numerous first-place blue ribbon merit

Throughout Ed’s many years of lecturing across the country, if there is one constant he hears
photographers cite as their greatest challenge, it is hands down ‘sales’ and how can they
increase their sales average. This program is designed to help demystify and simplify the
sales process. ‘SALE’ is not a four letter word to fear! Learning to sell is critical to having a
successful portrait business and by the end of this program Ed will teach you to embrace
sales. The key to having success in all that you do is preparation. First, you must effectively
market your business to get your phone to ring. Second you must create beautifully posed
images with great expressions and variety; and third, you must have an uncomplicated,
organized sales system. Ed’s formula to a successful sale starts with effective marketing. His
program will cover marketing strategies that will help make your phone ring throughout
the year. He’ll demonstrate how to capture a variety of properly posed images and how to
get great expressions that wow your client and create a need. He’ll conclude with step by
step instructions on how he prepares his images before the sales session, walk you through
his image presentation process, share tips, techniques and wording to use during the image
presentation and demonstrate how he has perfected making the sales session enjoyable and
uncomplicated for both you and your client. Ed’s proven sales formula will teach you how
he has mastered selling wall portraits to 98% of his clientele by educating and wowing them
and how you can easily and effectively do the same.

Business, life, love... it’s all pretty simple actually. So why do we insist on making it all so
darn complicated? We’ve all heard that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication,
but how can that be applied to workflow? What about business strategy? In this workshop,
you’ll see how less hassle, less stress, and less work clears the way for more freedom, more
profit, and most importantly—more fun. If your workflow is out of control and your edit
backlog is piled sky high, it’s time for an intervention. (Imagine being able to edit an entire
wedding—and design the album—in a single day, with plenty of time left to cook dinner!)
We’ll start by redefining “workflow” as we streamline everything from strategy to software.
Toss some Adobe InDesign basics into the mix, and you’ll be making wedding albums,
pricing guides, contracts, and interactive PDFs, so quickly and easily, you might almost
feel guilty. Almost.
A one-woman show, Khara has been dazzling clients with
outrageous service and record-breaking turnaround times
since shooting her first wedding 14 years ago. Her book, “Your
Camera Loves You: Learn to Love it Back” (Peachpit Press)
showcases her unique teaching style and playful sense of
humor that continue to endear her to an exponentially
growing audience. Her latest book, “Album Moxie” (Peachpit
Press) is helping to rescue photographers from their workflow
woes with the magic of InDesign. Khara shares her passion,
knowledge, and experience speaking at industry conferences
and teaching on global platforms including creativeLIVE. She
believes in good design, an efficiently effective workflow, and
all things covered in chocolate.

  • 5. 3 A Message from Our President Welcome to the 85th Annual Vermont Professional Photographers Convention! 85 years ago the 1st telephone was installed in the White House, Ansel Adams was just starting out, the 1st color TV was demoed, Babe Ruth became the 1st to hit 500 homers, and the stock market crashed triggering the “Great Depression”. A lot has changed over the past 85 years and not just within the world we live in, but within our organization as well. While at times we may feel like we are struggling and just hanging on, we have proven that neither the digital age nor the “Uncle Bobs” will make professional photographers obsolete. Instead we grow, we learn, and we adapt in order to continue forward. And though we may have a smaller group than we had in our heyday, we have a strong group of professionals that are dedicated to perfecting their craft and cultivating relationships with their fellow professionals. I believe that that is more important than lowering the standards of our organization in order to boost membership numbers. This past year has been yet another wonderful experience on the VPP Board. My extreme gratitude is extended to each of my board members for their time and commitment to the running of our fine organization. Without each of our board members we would be lacking in the quality education and meetings that allow us to learn from one another as well as professionals from around the world. I hope that you enjoy your time at the convention this year and take home not only some new ideas but some great memories as well. I look forward to spending time in conversation and education with you over the next year with the Vermont Professional Photographers. Kindly, Kathleen

  • 7. 5 PPA National Award The National Award is offered by the Professional Photographers of America to State, Regional, National & International affiliated organizations on a yearly basis. First made available in 1958, the award recognizes those persons who generously contribute their time and talents to the service of their profession, their affiliated organization, and their fellow photographers. Selections of the award are determined by the recipient’s peers, which adds to its distinction and value. The choice of the recipient is left to the individual state, regional, and national affiliates. It may be given to a member or non-member, to someone in or outside the field of professional photography. It need not be awarded every year if no suitable candidate is found. The award will be presented at the VPP’s annual awards function. The selection of a new recipient is made by the VPP National Award Committee which is composed of all living recipients of this award from the VPP. The first National Award ever presented by VPP was to Eudora (Dot) Patch of Randolph, Vermont in 1959. 2012 David Cramer 2009 Nancy Green 2007 Don R. Whipple 2005 Donna M. • 18. 16 12 Elements of a Merit Print • Impact - What you see first. What holds your eye. What demands your attention. What commands you to look. • Creativity - Originality. A fresh approach. Creative subject, cropping, design, invention, feeling, etc. • Style - Your style reflects your vision. Artistic expression and uniqueness of execution • Composition - Harmonious arrangements. Placement of subject matter. Using dynamic symmetry to place the most important objects within a space. Good rhythm is created by repetition, whether it is color, space, lines, moods, or divisions of the photograph. • Presentation - Dare to be different. The presentation enhances the photograph. Does the cropping add to the composition? Does the matting and mounting compliment and support the image? • Color Balance - Creative use of color - examples: complimentary colors, dark against light, strong against weak. Interpretive, primary, secondary, tertiary, aggressive and receding colors. • Center Of Interest - Subject matter holds the eye. The main subject is arranged so that one center of interest prevails. Secondary points are also important to the photograph, but shouldn’t be distracting. • Lighting - Lighting is the art of photography. It creates the mood, reproduces the characteristics of the subjects, and makes a statement. Good directional lighting is essential. Without it, photography lacks strength and definition. • Subject Matter- Interpretation of the subject matter. Selection of the subject. Treatment can be very creative: young and old, warm and cool. The camera angle for the subject is important. • Print Quality - Details in the highlights and shadows. Using the middle tones. Good color balance. Good strong contrast. Background in key with the subject. • Technique - Technique is the foundation of creative photography. How well all the elements are assembled and combined. Different treatments for the subject matter. Knowledge of art principles is important. Breaking the rules can be a good technique only if the follow through is purposeful with forethought. • Story Telling - Every picture should tell a story and be able to be understood in just a moment or two. The reason for the photograph and the statement it is making. The achievement of a purpose helps build an emotional response which challenges the viewers imaginations and views.

  • 28. 26 2014 Conference - Simply Great Khara Plicanic Business, life, love... it’s all pretty simple actually. So why do we insist on making it all so darn complicated? We’ve all heard that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication, but how can that be applied to workflow? What about business strategy? In this workshop, you’ll see how less hassle, less stress, and less work clears the way for more freedom, more profit, and most importantly—more fun. If your workflow is out of control and your edit backlog is piled sky high, it’s time for an intervention. (Imagine being able to edit an entire wedding—and design the album—in a single day, with plenty of time left to cook dinner!) We’ll start by redefining “workflow” as we streamline everything from strategy to software. Toss some Adobe InDesign basics into the mix, and you’ll be making wedding albums, pricing guides, contracts, and interactive PDFs, so quickly and easily, you might almost feel guilty. Almost. A one-woman show, Khara has been dazzling clients with outrageous service and record-breaking turnaround times since shooting her first wedding 14 years ago. Her book, “Your Camera Loves You: Learn to Love it Back” (Peachpit Press) showcases her unique teaching style and playful sense of humor that continue to endear her to an exponentially growing audience. Her latest book, “Album Moxie” (Peachpit Press) is helping to rescue photographers from their workflow woes with the magic of InDesign. Khara shares her passion, knowledge, and experience speaking at industry conferences and teaching on global platforms including creativeLIVE. She believes in good design, an efficiently effective workflow, and all things covered in chocolate.
