both professionally and ethically, and to create, foster, promote and maintain
cordial relations and exchange knowledge among its members. Our bi-
monthly meetings feature seminars and workshops by guest speakers on
specified topics. Our yearly print critique gives our members opportunities
for feedback on new work. The annual convention is an in-depth opportunity
to learn, compare notes, receive honors, relax and have fun together.

How You Can Start a Love Affair with Your Blog
1pm - 4pm at the essex
Everyone knows that you should be doing them but
few actually do. I’m talking about blog posts. Why
should I write them if I can’t imagine anyone is
reading them? And, if no one is reading them, why
should I write them? And, if I do write them, how can I get people to
read them? I stink at grammar so I’m afraid I’d embarrass myself? What
would I write about anyway? I had all these questions myself, and after
hearing the answers I finally found a way to systematize blog posts so
it became easier and easier to do them. Blogging can make all those
other marketing ideas come together and be more effective and easier to
implement. If you believe marketing can work, you can’t afford not to blog.

Welcome to our 2022 Annual Vermont Professional
Photographers Convention.
As we come to the end of my term as President, I can’t
help but to reflect back to 2 years ago when I first stepped
into this role with big goals and expectations. Unfortunately
immediately after that convention everything changed for
us very quickly as COVID-19 came to town. Some of the
immediategoals may have been crushed, but theexpectations
that I had surpassed me by far. With the help of a very
strong and dedicated group of board members, we were
able to provide so many more education opportunities than I would have
ever expected under the conditions. Not only were we blessed with many
outside speakers, but our own members made it a point to interact often and
keep everything moving along, share their expertise, offer support, networking,
technical expertise, and marketing. Our meetings always started and ended
with smiles and supportive attitudes, This is my greatest appreciation to
them and shows their true professionalism and friendships.
We never know how quickly things can change, I ask that all of our wonderful
members continue to utilize the education and opportunities that are set
forth for you and follow the goals that you set for yourselves every day.
Peace, Health and Happiness
Natascha
This year marks my 10th as a VPP Member, and in celebration
and gratitude I step into the role of President. I can’t think
of a better way to give back to an organization that has given
me so much: priceless education, lifetime friendships and a
supportive community to name a few. I choose to lead with
the motto “a rising tide raises all ships,” and I look forward
to working with our dedicated board in continuing to offer
meaningful education, and to foster, promote and maintain
what makes this group so special: you. Cheers, Jamie

vermont degrees
At the 91st Convention Banquet, two new state degree programs were
introduced, modeled after affiliate state’s programs. Both are cumulative
points earned in increments of 50. The “Service Degree” is designed to
recognize those members who volunteer their time and expertise to help
run the organization. The “Print Excellence Degree” has a white ribbon and
is presented to members who compete in Print Competition at the state level.
2020 degree recipients:
degrees scholarships
the ivan burnham scholarship
All professional members of the VPP are eligible to
receive scholarships to study photography at schools
of photography. Money for these scholarships comes
from interest from a fund which has been set up with
donations and profits which the Association has
earned from its annual conferences.
To be eligible for a scholarship, the member must
have paid dues on or before the first of February each
year and must have accumulated nine or more attendance
points (of a possible 14) during the year since the last conference.
Scholarships are awarded for study at any school approved by the Executive
Committee of the Association.
The Fund is named for the late Ivan and Bernice Burnham, loyal
members of the Vermont Professional Photographers, who gave freely
of their knowledge and time to all members. They operated a photography
studio in Waterbury for many years.
In 1994 the President’s Award was established as a means for the President to
recognize a person who has been of particular help during his or her term in
office. The President’s Award is presented at the Annual Awards Banquet to
the person or persons the President feels has provided outstanding service to
Vermont Professional Photographers during the preceding year.

The National Award is offered by the Professional Photographers of America
to State, Regional, National International affiliated organizations on a
yearly basis. First made available in 1958, the award recognizes those persons
who generously contribute their time and talents to the service of their
profession, their affiliated organization, and their fellow photographers.
Selections of the award are determined by the recipient’s peers, which adds to
its distinction and value.
The choice of the recipient is left to the individual state, regional, and national
affiliates. It may be given to a member or non-member, to someone in or
outside the field of professional photography. It need not be awarded every
year if no suitable candidate is found. The award will be presented at the
VPP’s annual awards function.
The selection of a new recipient is made by the VPP National Award Committee
which is composed of all living recipients of this award from the VPP.

mack derick award
The Memorial Fund of the Vermont Professional Photographers was
established in 1973 as a fitting way to honor the memory of those who
are no longer with us. Contributions to this fund may be made in any
amount in memory of friends, relatives and loved ones. Proceeds of this
fund help the Ivan and Bernice Burnham Fund to provide scholarships for
eligible members for the improvement of their photographic knowledge
and skills.
The Mack Derick Memorial Award was established in 1994
to give members a continuing incentive to create and enter
images of their own production. The award is in memory of
one of the founders of Vermont Professional Photographers
and a lifelong craftsman of the photographic arts.
Any member of VPP may enter one print annually in the
Mack Derick Memorial competition. Each entry must be wholly of the
maker’s own production, (with the exception of color first generation
processing) from the negative through the finished, mounted print including
all retouching or enhancement. Judging shall be on the same basis as the
VPP Annual Image Competition. In order to receive the Mack Derick Print
Award, the competitor must enter annually until 15 points have been awarded.
If the competitor misses a year, the point total returns to zero and the count
starts over.

93rd
annual convention image awards
Impact
What you see first. What holds your eye. What demands your
attention. What commands you to look.
Technical
Excellence
This is the print quality of the actual image as it’s presented
for viewing. There are a lot of aspects that speak to the qual-
ities of the physical print. These can include: retouching,
manipulation, sharpness, exposure color correction.
Creativity
Originality. A fresh approach. Creative subject, cropping,
design, invention, feeling, etc.
Style
Your style reflects your vision. Artistic expression and
uniqueness of execution
Composition
Harmonious arrangements. Using dynamic symmetry to
place the most important objects within a space.
Presentation Dare to be different. The presentation enhances the photo-
graph. Does the cropping add to the composition? Does the
matting and mounting compliment and support the image?
Color
Balance
Creative use of color - examples: complimentary
colors, dark against light, strong against weak. Interpretive,
primary, secondary, tertiary, aggressive and receding colors.
Center Of
Interest
Subject matter holds the eye. The main subject is arranged so
that one center of interest prevails. Secondary points are also
important to the photograph, but shouldn’t be distracting.
Lighting Lighting is the art of photography. It creates the mood,
reproduces the characteristics of the subjects, and makes a
statement. Good directional lighting is essential. Without it,
photography lacks strength and definition.
Subject
Matter
Interpretation of the subject matter. Selection of the
subject. Treatment can be very creative: young and old, warm
and cool. The camera angle for the subject is important.
Technique Technique is the foundation of creative photography. How
well all the elements are assembled and combined. Different
treatments for the subject matter. Knowledge of art principles
is important. Breaking the rules can be a good technique only
if the follow through is purposeful with forethought.
Story
Telling
Every picture should tell a story and be able to be understood
in just a moment or two. The reason for the photograph and
the statement it is making. The achievement of a purpose
helps build an emotional response which challenges the
viewers imaginations and views.
