2. PREFACE
Economic Statistics with the course code Econ 122 uses the tools of statistics as
applied to research and economics. It is designed to present various statistical concepts
or methods that would describe and interpret data to come up with a decision through
forecasting or predictions and give empirical content to economic relations for use a
standard measure of business and economic performance. To ensure the course objectives
would be achieved, a need for a teaching resource material is necessary. Thus, this worktext
has been prepared.
The worktext is intended for use by students of AB Economics program taking up the
subject Econ 122 with the objective of providing them with a comprehensive understanding
comprehensive framework for consistent reasoning and analysis of economic data. Likewise,
it has been designed as an instrument for learning development and assessment, providing
students with a practical approach to applying the knowledge learned in the lectures. Each
worktext covers exercises that is built upon the lessons of all the chapters with the following
course outcomes:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the nature, scope and significance of statistics as
applied to economic statistics.
2. Understand how to organize and graph qualitative economic data.
3. Analyze location, variability and association of data using statistical measures like
mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, and variance.
4. Use probability to measure the degree of uncertainty of events occurring in economic
and business problems.
5. Apply a working understanding of probability distributions (normal and binomial).
6. Analyze and use sampling distributions to provide a major simplification on the route
to statistical inference.
7. Conduct hypothesis testing to determine whether a statement about the value of a
population parameter should be rejected or should not be rejected.
8. Analyze the techniques for modeling and analyzing the relationship between a dependent
variable and one or more independent variables using regression analysis.
9. Analyze the strength and direction of statistical relationship between two random
variables or two sets of data using correlation analysis.
10. Analyze the significant difference between or among variables using ANOVA.
11. Utilize non-parametric inferential statistical methods which are mathematical
procedures for statistical hypothesis testing.
Bear in mind that it takes sustained effort – and some dedicated patience – to study
and learn the subject. But, it is assured that the effort is well worth it. It is hoped this
modest work helps you. So, the best of luck as you begin your journey in answering the
