Reflections from Mr. D.P. Nadkarni, Sr. Director, Jakson Power Solutions
Mr. D.P. Nadkarni, Senior Director,
Jakson Power Solutions
Mr. D.P. Nadkarni is B. Tech (Hans)
in Mechanical Engineer from liT,
Mumbai, 1972 batch. He has also
done his PG studies in Finance &
Marketing. He has had 20 years'
combined experience in Greaves as
well as Batliboi, before joiningJakson
in 1992.
At Jakson he currently looks
after the manufacturing functions
of all plants. The entire plant design
at Daman, equipment selection,
procurement, and deployment was
done Mr. Nadkarni as green-field
projects.
Mr. Nadkarni, is on Board of
Directors, ruminates on the core
business lines of the company and
its operations.
Solar Business
Solar is the future power. Barring
average velocity of the wind is very
low in India.
In IPP, only players in the
organized sector can survive. This
is because of O&M and extra long
warrantyperiods goingup to 25years.
For Solar production, PV cells are to
be imported although manufactured
in India. The solar modules are also
to be imported from Europe, China
or Taiwan.
Jakson undertakes both

MW projects 'on grid'. It does

communication towers as well as for

power. The company ha~ strong R
& D teams - one at Kalsar handling
Gensets and other at Naida focusing
on Solar and Distribution Products.
It has a Global Training Center-cum-
Service Facility at Naida which is run
in association with Cummins.
Challenges Ahead
The gap between demand & supply
is ever increasing. State Electricity
Boards, with paucity of funds, will
never be able to bridge this gap.
The quality of coal in the country is
very poor. Hence import of coal is
inevitable to keep the power plants
humming.
The per capita consumption
Turnover & Growth of power in the country is very low.
The J.akson Group has a turnover With the standard of living going up,
of Rs.1,500 crores. In this the power consumption and demand
contribution of the Gensets Div. is ..rwill also increase. DG power is here

Distributionput together contributes
Rs.200 crores. The Gensets business
is expected to grow at the rate of 10-
15% annually.
The company has plans to step
up the contribution of solar to Rs.500
crores in the next three years. The
company will remain focused on
IPP. It will be adding a number of
solar products in the coming years
- products like solar water purifiers,

deterrent for those for those planning
to go in for Genset power.

Maintaining Leadership Position
Jakson will continue to maintain and
enhance the quality of its products &
services. It will extend its customer
service even to remote areas and
improve its response time. The
company will remain closer to the
customer, making the best use of its
dealer network. Cummins itself has
100 dealers. The company's policy is
1:hat no dealer be more than 150 km
away from the customer. Jakson is
already giving two years' warranty or
5000 hrs of operation for Genset~. It
keeps a good inventory of spares to
make them available to the customer

ideal for setting up solar plants; you
have enough space. In solar energy,
