1. Costume ideas
1. In order to create the costume for the demon in the basement, horns and extremely long, sharp fingers needed
to be designed. After much thought, I have decided to use expanding foam in order to create the large horns that I
need. I will do this by outlining the horns on aluminium foil, and spraying the foam into the outline, allowing it
to set and harden within a few hours. The rough edges will then be trimmed off with scissors/a Stanley knife into
the desired shape, and subsequently sanded. Due to the fact that only a silhouette of the demon will be seen,
perfection is not required, and it will only recieve a single coating of black acrylic paint. Proceeding this, the
horns will be attached to the head by sticking two long needles through a headband, and screwing them on – easy
to do due to the malleability of the foam.
2. For the fingers, the person playing the demon will need to insert their arms into two long, hollow tubes.
This will give the appearance of their arms being inhumanly long, and the tube will be manipulated
accordingly in order to prevent it from looking disproportionate to the rest of the arm. At the end of each
tube, an old glove will be fitted, with long knives cellotaped in place of each of the fingers. As the whole
demon will be in darkness, and silhouetted, there shouldn’t be a way to recognise each of these objects, and
the whole idea will look realistic as a long, clawed arm.
2. 3. To create the costume of the ghost that used to own the house, many years ago, old fashioned, upper class
clothing will need to manipulated in order to look suitably terrifying. For this reason, the actor playing this
particular ghost will be dressed in an old-fashioned tuxedo, with a smart Victorian waistcoat, covered in dust
and bloodstains. Furthermore, due to the fact that this previous owner committed suicide through self-strangulation,
an old, filthy sack will be placed over the face, and bound with rope at the neck. Eyeholes will
be roughly cut, and a felt marker will be drawn around these to give the impression of decay. A real axe will
serve as the prop that this actor wields.
4. The actress playing the little girls haunting the house will also be dressed in Victorian-era fashion,
wearing a pale blue dress and a bonnet. She will have matted hair and a ghostly complexion, with smudged
lipstick and a doll she carries around. As these little girls are only seen at a distance throughout the trailer,
there will be less emphasis on overall costume than on the more dominant characters.
5. As opposed to the interesting costume choices for the antagonists of the trailer, the protagonists are two
‘ordinary’ people, and due to the fact that the film is set within modern day society, they will be dressed
plainly. The actor playing Joel will be wearing either a jumper or a polo shirt, with blue jeans and glasses,
and the actress playing Kerrie will be dressed in a slightly more eccentric sense, due to her young age and
open-mindedness. She will most likely be wearing a fuzzy jumper and leggings.
