FILM TITLE FILM GENRE
Too Old – Joe Hackman (2020) Drama, Comedy
Showcase Title
Points of view: Yours, mine, theirs
Film in brief:
• With an old man who arrives at his daughter's house for tea, he finds out they're leaving
the next day on a trip that he hadn't been invited for because he's 'too old', which
therefore evidently gets angry, leaves, and precedes to go to the pub in which him and his
friend arrange a bungee jumping experience to prove his point (of being right against
everyone else's judgement). Going to the bridge location after boosting his ego
and judgement on the situation, he then backs out from doing the bungee jump, leaving a
comedic nature and genre behind as he realises in a lack-lust moment.
What did I like about it?
• Throughout the short film we had a constant cinematic touch to the film, this
was exemplified through a good use of colour grading and shot types that helped
portray the scene; these were also attributes that I liked a lot in its production, they
helped give off interpretations without physically saying anything in the dialogue, such
as when low angle shots are used to reflect looking over the edge of the bridge, and kept
the atmosphere moving from scene to scene efficiently, keeping a warm saturated look to
support the moods being emphasised from the main character (heightened emotions).
• In addition to those qualities, the music choice, particularly at the end scenario when at
the bridge edge, was incredibly thought out and suiting to the shot types and narrative,
building up in tention with a dramatic effect that compliments the cinematic colour grading
and emotion, suspecting that if he did bungee jumping, he probably would die in doing so.
What didn’t I like about it?
• The only critique I could pull from the short film is that in some of the acting, particularly
with the pub friend, the script and language felt unnatural, to the extent that some of his
wordings seemed forced and intended to say beforehand; I think this could easily be fixed,
and is slightly critical, but from my viewpoint it seemed obvious what they were going to
How did it end up making you feel?
• Up until the dramatic scene when the main character encounters the bridge and is about
to bungee jump, I could sense a tension build up in some of the shot types and dramatic
music giving off an uneasy, slightly nervous reaction from myself and the audience
watching; but as soon as he pulls out of the near dangerous situation, a comedic value
makes emotions swiftly change into a relaxation and quite enjoyable atmosphere knowing
he's now safe and has a greater understanding of being 'too old'.
Did it make you laugh, scared etc?
• I was particularly nervous knowing he was looking over the edge of the bridge about
to jump, in expectant that he would have died, but I did give of a little grin and laugh
when knowing he backed out and into his friend's car; this was supported through the
almost immediate stop in dramatic music to the sound of the car door closing that hinted
at the intention of comedic value.
Would you recommend it to someone else?
• The film itself has many processes, techniques and methods of which makes it
very enjoyable to watch; the cinematic mood, camerawork, narrative and music choices
support that desire of shareability to promote it more than other films, especially
considering that its very accessible which heightens its ease of accesses and share it even
more than before.
Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses?
• This doesn’t specifically adhere towards my current project of making a documentary,
but I would link it effectively across my FMP, career ambitions and university courses;
aspiring to work in the media industry, more respectively in moving image production (film
and tv), I can associate many processes that are present in this short film towards myself,
improving my overall ability and a greater interest.

The Voices – Tracy Willits (2020) Documentary
Showcase Title
Points of view: Yours, mine, theirs
Film in brief:
• With Pauline going into town and celebrating her engagement, this documentary follows
her story from a young age when being diagnosed with schizophrenia and its apparent
worsening as she grew in age, hearing voices, going to a psychotic hospital and getting
rash treatments (electric shocks etc), and the overall impacts it has had on her early to
late life.
What did I like about it?
• The structure of the documentary is particularly interesting and well-done, having an
overall narrative of her celebrating her engagement, but more specifically covering her
whole life struggling with schizophrenia from a young age up until present day. This gave a
very engaging, interesting, and desire to watch the documentary more.
• Not only this, but the shots and cinematography taken are quite effective in presenting the
story; rule of thirds, layout, and colour grading is all present giving off a high quality,
professional source to the camerawork.
What didn’t I like about it?
• There isnt anything in particular that I dislike about the doucmentry, everything is
portrayed and explained very well with a wide variety of techniques, processes and
constructive methods.
How did it end up making you feel?
• The majority of the documentry gives off upsetting connotations when hearing about such
a difficult lifelong illness, you feel appreciative of your own life and sympathetic for what
they been through.
• But when seeing and hearing how they've improved significantely as an engaged
couple, you feel immeidately happy and gratefull that they enjoying themselves, free of
schizophrenia, because they can now fully enjoy their lives and the years that had been
taken away from themselves.
Did it make you laugh, scared etc?
• It was quite upsetting hearing about somebodys past experience with schozophrenia,
particularly because I hadnt known its effects and impacts on people fully but realising the
difficult times in their life with this mental health issue you understand it more and feel
extreamly symphathetic because you would usually relate these stories towards
yourself, upbringing these upsetting emotions.
Would you recommend it to someone else?
• I would definitely recommend this to other people, not only for some of the
characteristicks that I liked, as such with cienmatography, but I learnt an increadibly lot
about schizophrenia that I hadnt already known; learning this could come both very
usefull, but also made myself appreciate the things around me a lot more.
Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses?
• This could be very beneficial for career ambitions and university courses, as documentrys
come into working around moving image productions; but the predominant reason I chose
this film was because I am currently working my own documentry as a project. Watching
and understanding this different documentry style links and has helped me learn the

The Voices Of Men – Jonny White (2020) Documentry feature, Drama
Showcase Title
Points of view: Yours, mine, theirs
Film in brief:
• Sharing stories about serious, life changing personal experiences with mental health issues
(as such with depressions, anxiety, PTSD, and etc more), it covers men in a raw
documentary breaking down the stigma around men and making it clear
what extent situations can get to with suicide as so forth. With a numerous amount of
anonymous stories being shared in the expression of themselves and their own thoughts,
judgements and actions currently against when they were at their peak, this makes a very
captivating, emotionally compelling and upsetting genre that is toned around such a
serious topic.
What did I like about it?
• The way that the film has refelcted mens mental health, with an anonoumous style,
cinematic slideshow of isolated themes, and a mellow sympathetic soundtrack all works
increadibly well to get across the genre and mood being set.
• Having the anonoumous identity, which could have been purposefull or appreciative of the
'voices of men', helps emphasise the importance of their voices; almost getting rid of an
image and focussing their viewers on their thought processes and its impacts,
which targets the experiances being shared more effectively.
• A very low saturated, yet cinematic touch to the shots being shown, which are typically of
dark abandoned places, helps get across the quite sinister topic of mens mental health,
following trhough with sympathetic values that are intended from the director in the
audience.
What didn’t I like about it?
• Other than the fact that the video is cropped to a square size that is a little annoying at
times eventhougbh it may be beneficial for social media presence, I would have prefered to
have the identity of the person who is present completely anonymous - as such with
How did it end up making you feel?
• Eventhough it is a very sensative topic, thatb did evidently make me feeling sympathetic
anda slightly upset that people have gottent to the circumstances being explored, I did feel
quite inspired; hearing such sensative topics, and then relating them to myself and
realising how lucky I am makes me appreciative, but more importantly strives myself to get
the message being estaablished in the film (stereotypes on men and mental health),
because they gotten through those stages and found themselves as a person which I and
others respect a lot.
Did it make you laugh, scared etc?
• Ii didn’t perticularly form any physical emotions, as such with smiling, crying or being
scared, but generated a lot of internal compelling emotions instead.
Would you recommend it to someone else?
• Covering a very serious topic, that not only expresses a lot of emotions linked across the
subject, you learn an increadibly lot that improves a understanding about soemthing that
occurs amoungst everone at somepoint in their lifetime; given that its very beneficial
because you learn a greater understanding at a sensative topic, its also very engaging and
emotionally drawing which makes it effective and intreguing, by which I would recommend
it to anyone.
Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses?
• Once again this is a documentry style film, so immediately targets my current project in
making my own documentry as I can start to link and attach techniques/methods from it
into my own work, but this is categorised as a film, something I aspire to work around in
the near future as such with univeristy, my career and upcoming FMP (Final Major Project);
given that it’s a film I can analyse and extract a lot of information to support possabilities
in university or career oppertunities, but more importantly it investigates and

Beyond The Mind – Victoria Cotton (2020) Documentry,
Showcase Title
Points of view: Yours, mine, theirs
Film in brief:
• Following through the story of Barry Chambers, this documentary covers the life of Barry
from his working career, meeting his long loving wife up until first noticing a loss in
memory, and then then expectant worsening of his case. Going through the
different stages in his life, it shows his downfall of his case from many perspectives of
friends, family, carers and many more that give off an upsetting and nostalgic impression.
What did I like about it?
• The structure of the narrative is well put together, following the life of Barry Chambers and
is eventual worsening of dementia, as we cover his long-forgotten memories (due to his
illness) that links increadibly well to the overall narrative, almost reminding him of the
good times that have been lost in his lifetime.
• Regarding that it is a 20 minuet docuemntry, having a wide variety of interviews
taking place helps keep the viewers engaged and interested as we get the different
perspectives from others that prolong a desire to keep on watching.
What didn’t I like about it?
• I definitely think the effort has been put inot the docuemntry, but the shot quality and
cinematography could have been improved; with some wobbly footage, highly unsaturated
color grading, and poor framing at times in the film, this conveyed a less proffesional
source of information that may not be as trusted as much compared to others.
• This may be out of preferance, or just alittle critical, bu I think the interviewer is present
too much throughout the documentry; I understand that she may be a part of the
narrative, but having her present and speak more too often makes it not as emotionally
captivating, in contrast to if the persons husband was the only one telling the story as
she has understode it more seriously and is more trustworthy and emotionly seeking.
How did it end up making you feel?
• Throughout the course of the documentry upsetting and sympathetic moods and genres
are established trhough scenes of sadness, in both the nostalgic presence and emotional
physical response in some of the personnells, and this iis clear amoungst some of the
viwers aswell. It's clear the director wanted some sympathy and emotion to the sceanrio
being portrayed around dementia, as it can and has affected many different people and
families, and in doing so they have resieved a simular response of guilt, sympathy, and
sadness to the film from myself and others.
Did it make you laugh, scared etc?
• This didn’t perticularly cause any physical reaction to myself, having not fully experianced
dementia and or simular disorders, but I would fully understand if in doing so some
upsetting emotions and physical reaction to the docuemntry could present itself, as such
with crying etc.
Would you recommend it to someone else?
• I think I would recommend it ot somebody else given that you learn a lot about dementia
that willl come usefull at somepoint in time, its very interguing to watch you see the
upbrining of dementia in somebody and how it rapidly effects them, and eventhough its 20
minuets, it is worth watching for the many reason said previously.
Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses?
• This would definitely help with my current projject which includes creating a documentry,
as there are many pros in the construction of it I could use across my work simularly, and
regarding university and further work it could come beneficial as it comes under the
moving imagye rpduction that I aspire to work within; but when considering my FMP (Final
Major Project) the use and effective portrayel of emotional reactions from the auidence is
helpful, other than that everything else isnt nessesary.

Beep – Max O'Toole (2020) Thriller
Showcase Title
World class filmmaking: Making more with less
Film in brief:
• Where Aaron (the main character) goes through his normal day life, everything from as
soon as waking up in the morning to going to sleep at night we see him doing everything in
fives – checking the door is locked, turning light switches off/on and so on five times each
time. Covering obsessive compulsive disorder through these repetitions, we encounter a
beeping sound that irritates him one night, pushing him to an extent thought not possible
as questioning his own sanity begins to drive him insane and do rash things because of this
disorder; presenting the typical and extreme circumstances of obsessive-compulsive
disorder, we learn a lot about the character and more his medical situation effectively in
this short film.
What did I like about it?
• I like the overall idea behind the narrative, presenting the effects and livelihoods of people
with obsessive compulsive disorder; not only does it show some of the typical signs, but
how serious cases can become, which is both informative and intriguing
• Some of the camera shot and angles were nice in portraying the scene, particularly when
the main character becomes irritated and we see this through non-verbal codes
given, therefore using close up shots to emphasise that frustration is smart.
What didn’t I like about it?
• I definitely think the storyline, and possibly the way it was reflected could have been either
improved or simplified to make it easier for the audience; mainly when his obsessive-
compulsive disorder is acting up (switching the lights), this isn't emphasised enough, as
such with a focus in on his actions.
How did it end up making you feel?
• I persume the film intended on having a threatening and frightening infleunce on its
auidence for the almost pshychotic ending, but because I wasn’t fully understanding of the
situation, I was extremely confused and more wierded out.
Would you recommend it to someone else?
• I don’t think I would recommend this film, because of its very confusing narrative that
easily mistakable; but the fact that it covers a serious topic, once realised, of obsessive-
compulsive disorder, it is quite informative to the emntal disorder that could come helpful
eventually.
Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses?
• I can't link this film to either of my career ambitions, current project, and university
courses, given that the narrative and style are somewhat poorly achieved and don’t
include anything reasonable to include within my own work, but it may link to my FMP; I
have already established that I want to get across a horror/thriller reflection of a film in my
FMP, and this is somewhat present in 'Beep' when characterizing a pshychotic person in
many sound implimentations, shot types, and actions perticularly, featutres which I could
link and demonnstrate effectively to the genres.

Shelter – Ruairi Wright (2020) Thriller, Drama
Showcase Title
World class filmmaking: Making more with less
Film in brief:
• Where 2 hungry and cold homeless people seek 'shelter', they sneak into a supposed
empty house to gather supplies of their needs; all goes well until a housekeeper appears,
creating an unsettling situation for the younger boy as the experienced older homeless
person does some rash decisions, resolving the un-nervy predicament as the younger guy
leaves single-handedly with the two others in bad positions.
What did I like about it?
• The cinematography and how things are captured are exceptionally balanced with the
colour grading present, creating a cinematic atmosphere to the film that is nessecary and
effective given that its meant to be engaging, integuing and captivating to the audience for
it to be succesful.
• The script for all of the characters is very well done, representing each character to the
point, and seems very natural to listen to; not only this but the way the actors exemplify
themselves when speaking is very beliavable and understanding to some of the situations,
making it more engaging and desirable.
What didn’t I like about it?
• The narrative is well structured, giving a clear insight and view to the situation and whats
happening, but towards the end when they find themselves in a difficult situation, its abit
confusing and could have been managed better as their actions are increadibly unnatural
to the scenario – knocking out the visitor and then knocking out (possibly killing) the more
experianced homeless guy just wouldn’t happen.
How did it end up making you feel?
• Throughout the film I felt increadibly anxious, waiting for somebody to return home and
cause an undesirable situation for the characters as its expected but surprising at the same
time. In addition to this, I felt very threatened from especially the older guy who had both
a very dominant and strong vocabularly and presence to the other characters.
Did it make you laugh, scared etc?
• The film did make me jump at times when the maintenance guy was knocked over by a
large smash against his head, which was effective for the sense of unpredictability that
makes it more engaging and dramatic.
Would you recommend it to someone else?
• I would recommend this to others, for its captivating narrative, satisfying cinematography,
and engaging unpredictability that makes this film sublime and easy watching for the
viewers.
Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses?
• I definitely think this film can link towards my career ambitions, FMP, and university
courses with wanting to work around moving image production and given that there are a
range of features and technical ability I can link and re-use in some of my work to gain a
greater interest and understanding from my audience. Regarding my current project, many
of the characteristicks can't be linked across a doucmentry (my current project), but the
cinematography layout, shot types, and colour grading could come usefull with some
methods that include montages, slideshows and emotive images to create tension and
persuation.

Risk It For A Biscuit – Daniel Cappere (2020) Animation, Comedy, Thriller
Showcase Title
World class filmmaking: Making more with less
Film in brief:
• About at young gingerbread man, the story shows an intrigued gingerbread boy that
ventures outside into the kitchen, expecting an exciting adventure this quickly changes as
its pleasantly surprised by a dark, more sinister world. Now with a much clearer
understanding, the gingerbread boy seeks out the safety of his home in an escape back
through shifts and turns encountering the deadly nature of outside the house.
What did I like about it?
• The animation aspect of the film is very well created, with not suspicious jumps or
fluctuation in the movements and or scene changes, that makes it almost satisfying to
watch and non-the-less engaging.
• I perticularly like the music soundtracks and individual sound implementations for the
gingerbread's movement, this makes it catchy at some moments, but also very dramatic
and encouraging of the moods/emotions being portrayed in the animation, such as with
either encountering the large kitchen scenario and dying slice of bread.
• The narrative that has been chosen for the gingerbread boy and his adventures in the
kitchen are both very captivating and smart of the producer, portraying an ongoing
unpredictable storyline that holds a desire to carry on watching, whilst in addition it
reflects current worldwide crises with promoting people to stay at home and covid-19.
What didn’t I like about it?
• I had only identified its purpose of reflecting covid-19 situations to staying at home
trhough the synopsis, so I think this could have been portrayed and represented abit easier
for the audience to have a greater understanding of the films purpose, otherthan just being
about a gingerbread boy who goes on a scary adventure that is evidently reflected very
well in the animation.
How did it end up making you feel?
• When stuck outside in the kitchen during the film I definitely felt sorry for the gingerbread
boy, as you had come to realise, he didn’t expect and understand the circumstances of not
being able to leave like everybody else untill having left.
Would you recommend it to someone else?
• I think I would only recommend this for entertainment purposes, otherwise I wouldn’t as
its quite unessecary and you don’t perticularly learn a lot about anything when watching
this animation. In addition, the film is only 5 minuets long so doesn’t keep you engaged
that easily from watching it fully.
Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses?
• Unfortunately, I don’t think I can link this across any of my projects, career ambitions, and
or universioty courses because it is highly animation focused, but the use of sound to
distinguish moods, genres and the scenarios could come beneficial; especially in audio-
based production, that may become apparent to my courses, and or film production where
foley or som, ething simular is nessecary.

Rich – Aaron Good (2020) Drama
Showcase Title
World class filmmaking: Making more with less
Film in brief:
• With an old guy called 'rich', we have him hiding the fact he recently found out about
how hes become terminally ill. Keeping the situation to himself, his carer finds out when a
letter is discovered, keeping her anxious, upset, and worried for his sake as 'rich' has
suspended treatment. Keeping this at bay, and considering the options, Elizabeth (carer)
has to come to terms with his decision-making situation, finishing with an incline that he
had died soon after resolving the story in an upsetting way.
What did I like about it?
• The scripting of the film had been done to a good standard, making it seem natural that
makes it more beliavable, and with the recognition of a narrative that is intentionally
upsetting, the good scripting makes it more emotionally driven and engaging.
• The cinematography once again was something I admired in this short film, using the
correct shot types effectively to portray and draw an emotional reaction from the
audience, good use of layouting the shot to present the scenario, and the demonstration
colour grading helps emphasise and establish the characters of scene more seriously.
What didn’t I like about it?
• Eventhough majority of the script was natural, beliavable and well done, i think the
scripting of the priest from the church scene could have been done better, for it seems
unatural, slightly baised and stereortypical; this only makes it less unbeliavable and almost
comedic in a sense that is not needed fro a film on this topic.
• I perticularly think some more sound implimentations, effects, or soundtracks could have
been used to add to the effect, emphasising the situation or specific actions that engage
the audience or tell the story with key aspects highlighted more than others.
How did it end up making you feel?
• Being honest I felt alittle annoyed that he hadnt taken the treatment to extend his lifetime,
but I was more unerstanding as the narrative went on longer that he just wanted to be
with his wife, creating an upsetting and sympathetic feeling, this had only been drawn out
through the emotive structure, cinematography, and music that supported these feelings
in their auidence.
Would you recommend it to someone else?
• There are a lot of greate things about this film that supports itself, as such with the
cinematic touch and consistent engagement because of the narrative and so forth, but I
wouldn’t recommend it; the film is captivating and emotionally compelling, but I think it's
too long drawn out over abouts 15 minuets and doesn’t teach you much otherthan the
story of this specific person that isnnt beneficial, so it's only purpose is for entertianment
in which it exceeds that aspect only.
Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses?
• I think this would strongly link across all of my possible university courses, career
ambitions, and FMP, mainly because the film holds many charactertisticks that I will or
could use in my own work to establish its form, but admiring to work around moving image
production , this falls into that category thoroughly.
• Acknowledging my current project, which is creating my own factual documentry, I don’t
think I can't relate this perticular film in any way; theres isnt any techniques or
methods, processes or features that I could reflect in my own work from this film to
benefit my own project.

Bringing Home The Blubber – Molly Adams (2020) Documentry,
Showcase Title
Real Lives: Creating An Authentic Documentry
Film in brief:
• Following the lifestyle of a Greenlandic seal hunter at a poorer lifestlye than most, we
experience his day to day life hunting and living off seal blubber. Following his life we
encounter the dark times, happy things, and a life of fulfilment and isolation on the arctic
ocean.
What did I like about it?
• The docuemntry itself is extremely unique and informative, giving us an insight to
something to most people will not ever experience, which is evermore engaging and
intreguing against other sources
• The wide variety in shots, cinematography present, and strucutre of the documentry is
ever changing, keeping the viewers constantely engaged and interested that is additionally
effective for maintaining a desire to carry on watching
What didn’t I like about it?
• Eventhough its extremely effective having no background music and or sound effects
because it makes it more engaging, personally directed and focussing to whats being
shown or said, I think having somesort of audio could either help emphasise important
things to the audience, or add some value of identity some it's more simular to other
documentrys.
How did it end up making you feel?
• Throughout the course of the documentry I was just particularly interested in the
comparison of livelihoods between the diffferant backgrounds, not really demonstrating
much as of feelings but curiosity; however towards the end when hearing more of this
persons specific story, I was extremely sympathetic and slightly overwhelemd when you
hear the tough experiances hes been involved around, especially considering how we see
in the documentry his physical reaction and the effects its drawn onto him.
Would you recommend it to someone else?
• The fact that this documentry is both extremely intreguing, informative and quite cultural
of these icelandic livelihoods, and given that its very well structurred, filmed, and sourced
from makes it very engaging and entertaining to watch, meaning I would definitely
recommend this to others for these reasons.
Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses?
• Recognising that’s it’s a docuemntry, holding many features and techniques that I could
resembel in my own work, makes it immediately link to my current project (making my
own factual documentry).
• With referance to my FMP, career ambitions, and possible university courses, this film
doesn’t notebly link in as many form factors, with different techniques and methods to
show of certain situations or intended meanings, making it less likey to link; but
acknowledging the fact that it still includes some moving image processes, like
cinematography and sturcture, this can link through.

• Say what you mean
• Show don’t tell
• Don’t direct the camera from the page
• Get the story going – Hook the attention (hit the ground running), show your cahracters in action, don’t preface or setup or introduce your story, don’t describe the exposition/backstory
• Coherance – Know your world and story (know it off by heart), know your genre and tone, give us a focused way in, don’t try and do to much too soon, beware of distractions
• Character – Emotionally compelling (we need to have an empathy towards them), we want to spend time with them (almost wanting to know more), need to see the world through their POV, they need an
active journey with desires or needs or obsticles or dilemmas alongside, and they need to be distinct and not cliched
• Surprise – Should not be predictable as it would kill the story, finite numbers or archetypes, needs to be a fresh take and unique perspective and with an origional touch, whats different about my version
against others, and inevitability versus predictability
• Structure – All story is structured, must be going somewhere, needs a begginning (need) and middle (complication) and end (resolution), a dramatic purpose for each story beat and sequence and scene and
moment
• Story - Different types include linear/casual, circular (where the story ends where it starts as such with sitcoms 'resets'), a repetative story, an epic story, a generic story, and an fragmented story
• 5 Acts - Call of arms (establishes world and character and something that changes cahracters life), Frustration (the character begins their journey), Nightmare (the character tested even more), Resolution (all
their wants and needs)
• Expression – Good dialogue expresses the/a character, bad dialogue simply relates/explains, people don't tell each other things they already know in obvious ways, space and silence and suggestion
• Passion – Does this story keep you up at night?, Are you compelled to write?, Don’t try to be expedient, Don’t trry to second guess,

• The animated characters judge the shot being used
• Cameras, lighting and so fourth are on mechanical arms to restrict set being moved
• Everything is typically detachable and moveable, so that animaters, designers, lighting and the camera can fit in smaller or larger

• Giving off the impression of people or larger objects getting closer together, whole sets and walls can move inwards/outwards
• Trenches are built into the sets so that everything can be aquired, they are usually always present, but the shot minimally cuts it out precisely to milimeter points
• When applying sfk (gren screen etc), they are puposely edited to look like it was humand made. As such with an sfx glow is made to look like a bridal vail etc
• Many cameras, sometimes 10+, are used to capture each and ever shot for that scen for everytime to character are physically changed. Meaning the need to adjust cameras in any way isnt required
• Both small and larger lights are used equally for different attributes that are required (larger for a sun and smaller for room light etc)
• Cotton wool, curved soap and many other miscelanious items are used for effect to replace sgi in all possible cases as they typically want it to be as real as possible
• Animation are always shot in pitch black rooms to prevent reflection of light from possible sources, but also are sometimes painted specifically white to help as another sources of light in bigger scenarios

What do companys looks for?
• Something that is visually, conseptuality, narratively elevated.
• Under 14 minuets and free to watch classifys a short film
• Origionality is crucial, making sure the narratives are unique, distinct against other, and innovative
• Something with an emotional reaction, and engagement
• Sharability, will it be talked about and recognised in an audience. And whether its easily accesable so that it can be sahred and
viewed upon easily from different auidences (is it on many different platforms like youtube and so forth)
• Suitability, as such with online films need to hook an auidence much quicker against festival films
What should filmmakers do to have a more succeful release?
• Social media should be used, it covers many different platforms (instagram, snapchat etc), is easily accesible from many
auidences and groups, you can get a large presence quite easily that support other platofrms to support its promotion, it
covers ALL auidence from younger (instagram and snapchat) to older (with facbook particularly)
• Press packs are also increadibly usefull, giving more of an insight to the production team, director, film synopsis, they can give
off more of a personel connection ebtween its auidence, giving off a desire and persuasive push to watch and promote it.
• Trailers, short clips, and or teasers are effective, on these social media platofrms, they're not too tiem consuming, easy going
to watch, and often very engaging because not much is usually given off infromation wise to form a desire

I realised when creating my own products at a later stage, particularly in moving image productions at the end of my first year at college (FMP), how
important it is to get across your intended auidence for that piece. I origionally focused on myself, moving aside other people's perspectives, creating the
product of my own thoughts and opinions on it, but when undergoing practasis that include auidence research, research, and planning more so than
others, I developed a greater understanding at how nessecary this apsect is; recognising its importance, and wanting to improve my ability in a far strentch
of skills and processes through my years in education, the 'point of view: yours, mine, thiers' showcase stode out to myself and seems a great start to
broaden some competence in this area.
Showcase Screenings:
• Too Old (short film) – With an old man who arrives at his daughter's house for tea, he finds out they're leaving the next day on a trip that he hadn't been
invited for because he's 'too old', which therefore evidently gets angry, leaves, and precedes to go to the pub in which him and his friend arrange a
bungee jumping experience to prove his point (of being right against everyone else's judgement). Going to the bridge location after boosting his ego and
judgement on the situation, he then backs out from doing the bungee jump, leaving a comedic nature and genre behind as he realises in a lacklusta
moment.
• The Voices (documentary) - With Pauline going into town and celebrating her engagement, this documentary follows her story from a young age when
being diagnosed with schizophrenia and its apparent worsening as she grew in age, hearing voices, going to a psychotic hospital and getting rash
treatments (electric shocks etc), and the overall impacts it has had on her early to late life.
• The Voices Of Men (documentary) - Sharing stories about serious, life changing personal experiences with mental health issues (as such with
depressions, anxiety, PTSD, and etc more), it covers men in a raw documentary breaking down the stigma around men and making it clear what extent
situations can get to with suicide as so forth. With a numerous amount of anonymous stories being shared in the expression of themselves and their
own thoughts, judgements and actions currently against when they were at their peak, this makes a very captivating, emotionally compelling and
upsetting genre that is toned around such a serious topic.
• Beyond The Mind (documentary) - Following through the story of Barry Chambers, this documentary covers the life of Barry from his working
career, meeting his long loving wife up until first noticing a loss in memory, and then then expectant worsening of his case. Going through the different
stages in his life, it shows his downfall of his case from many perspectives of friends, family, carers and many more that give off an upsetting and
nostalgic impression.

With long term hobbies and interests around the film and tv industry (moving image production predominantely), its always intregued myself in the
different mindsets of directors and producers who make such increadible films; not only this but with wanting to be in the industry as an aspiring film or tv
producer, I wanted to know the circumstances, processes and functionality in making these films, something that could almost be directed into some of my
work to improve my own ability. Hearing from some other filmmakers, their thought process and methods they undergo is only but intreguing to myself,
making this showcase (world class filmmaking: making more with less) suiting to my aspirations and area of expertise.
Showcase Screenings:
• Beep - Where Aaron (the main character) goes through his normal day life, everything from as soon as waking up in the morning to going to sleep at
night we see him doing everything in fives – checking the door is locked, turning light switches off/on and so on five times each time. Covering obsessive
compulsive disorder through these repetitions, we encounter a beeping sound that irritates him one night, pushing him to an extent thought not
possible as questioning his own sanity begins to drive him insane and do rash things because of this disorder; presenting the typical and extreme
circumstances of obsessive-compulsive disorder, we learn a lot about the character and more his medical situation effectively in this short film.
• Shelter – Where 2 hungry and cold homeless people seek 'shelter', they sneak into a supposed empty house to gather supplies of their needs; all goes
well until a housekeeper appears, creating an unsettling situation for the younger boy as the experienced older homeless person does some rash
decisions, resolving the un-nervy predicament as the younger guy leaves single-handedly with the two others in bad positions.
• Risk It For A Biscuit - About at young gingerbread man, the story shows an intrigued gingerbread boy that ventures outside into the kitchen, expecting
an exciting adventure this quickly changes as its pleasantly surprised by a dark, more sinister world. Now with a much clearer understanding, the
gingerbread boy seeks out the safety of his home in an escape back through shifts and turns encountering the deadly nature of outside the house.,
• Rich - With an old guy called 'rich', we have him hiding the fact he recently found out about how hes become terminally ill. Keeping the situation to
himself, his carer finds out when a letter is discovered, keeping her anxious, upset, and worried for his sake as 'rich' has suspended treatment. Keeping
this at bay, and considering the options, Elizabeth (carer) has to come to terms with his decision-making situation, finishing with an incline that he had
died soon after resolving the story in an upsetting way.

Currently creating a documentry of my own, this topic of interest is new to myself, and learning
some of the different atributes in a docuemntry through selfteaching has been effective, but not
fully understanding; hearing from the proffesionals in the subject area, different methods, and
more specifically how to make an authetic documentry would exceed my ambitions to be
stronger across the whole indsutry in a range of products, therefore watching 'real lives: creating
an authentic documentry' would support that goal.
Showcase Screenings:
• Bringing Home The Blubber – Following the lifestyle of a Greenlandic seal hunter at a poorer
lifestlye than most, we experience his day to day life hunting and living off seal blubber.
Following his life we encounter the dark times, happy things, and a life of fulfilment and
isolation on the arctic ocean.
• Whose Future? Our Future? - With a recent uproar against reacting to climate changes in the
government, we have a young climate change activist, Elijah, who strongly believes in his
passion for climate change to be looked upon and acted on. Managing school life as a teenager
whilst sustaining his devotion to change in the world, he facess some struggles with
ongoing meetings and riots on a near constant basis as family and school get in the way.

  • 4. Films 1 FILM TITLE FILM GENRE Too Old – Joe Hackman (2020) Drama, Comedy Showcase Title Points of view: Yours, mine, theirs Film in brief: • With an old man who arrives at his daughter's house for tea, he finds out they're leaving the next day on a trip that he hadn't been invited for because he's 'too old', which therefore evidently gets angry, leaves, and precedes to go to the pub in which him and his friend arrange a bungee jumping experience to prove his point (of being right against everyone else's judgement). Going to the bridge location after boosting his ego and judgement on the situation, he then backs out from doing the bungee jump, leaving a comedic nature and genre behind as he realises in a lack-lust moment. What did I like about it? • Throughout the short film we had a constant cinematic touch to the film, this was exemplified through a good use of colour grading and shot types that helped portray the scene; these were also attributes that I liked a lot in its production, they helped give off interpretations without physically saying anything in the dialogue, such as when low angle shots are used to reflect looking over the edge of the bridge, and kept the atmosphere moving from scene to scene efficiently, keeping a warm saturated look to support the moods being emphasised from the main character (heightened emotions). • In addition to those qualities, the music choice, particularly at the end scenario when at the bridge edge, was incredibly thought out and suiting to the shot types and narrative, building up in tention with a dramatic effect that compliments the cinematic colour grading and emotion, suspecting that if he did bungee jumping, he probably would die in doing so. What didn’t I like about it? • The only critique I could pull from the short film is that in some of the acting, particularly with the pub friend, the script and language felt unnatural, to the extent that some of his wordings seemed forced and intended to say beforehand; I think this could easily be fixed, and is slightly critical, but from my viewpoint it seemed obvious what they were going to How did it end up making you feel? • Up until the dramatic scene when the main character encounters the bridge and is about to bungee jump, I could sense a tension build up in some of the shot types and dramatic music giving off an uneasy, slightly nervous reaction from myself and the audience watching; but as soon as he pulls out of the near dangerous situation, a comedic value makes emotions swiftly change into a relaxation and quite enjoyable atmosphere knowing he's now safe and has a greater understanding of being 'too old'. Did it make you laugh, scared etc? • I was particularly nervous knowing he was looking over the edge of the bridge about to jump, in expectant that he would have died, but I did give of a little grin and laugh when knowing he backed out and into his friend's car; this was supported through the almost immediate stop in dramatic music to the sound of the car door closing that hinted at the intention of comedic value. Would you recommend it to someone else? • The film itself has many processes, techniques and methods of which makes it very enjoyable to watch; the cinematic mood, camerawork, narrative and music choices support that desire of shareability to promote it more than other films, especially considering that its very accessible which heightens its ease of accesses and share it even more than before. Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses? • This doesn’t specifically adhere towards my current project of making a documentary, but I would link it effectively across my FMP, career ambitions and university courses; aspiring to work in the media industry, more respectively in moving image production (film and tv), I can associate many processes that are present in this short film towards myself, improving my overall ability and a greater interest.
  • 5. Films 2 FILM TITLE FILM GENRE The Voices – Tracy Willits (2020) Documentary Showcase Title Points of view: Yours, mine, theirs Film in brief: • With Pauline going into town and celebrating her engagement, this documentary follows her story from a young age when being diagnosed with schizophrenia and its apparent worsening as she grew in age, hearing voices, going to a psychotic hospital and getting rash treatments (electric shocks etc), and the overall impacts it has had on her early to late life. What did I like about it? • The structure of the documentary is particularly interesting and well-done, having an overall narrative of her celebrating her engagement, but more specifically covering her whole life struggling with schizophrenia from a young age up until present day. This gave a very engaging, interesting, and desire to watch the documentary more. • Not only this, but the shots and cinematography taken are quite effective in presenting the story; rule of thirds, layout, and colour grading is all present giving off a high quality, professional source to the camerawork. What didn’t I like about it? • There isnt anything in particular that I dislike about the doucmentry, everything is portrayed and explained very well with a wide variety of techniques, processes and constructive methods. How did it end up making you feel? • The majority of the documentry gives off upsetting connotations when hearing about such a difficult lifelong illness, you feel appreciative of your own life and sympathetic for what they been through. • But when seeing and hearing how they've improved significantely as an engaged couple, you feel immeidately happy and gratefull that they enjoying themselves, free of schizophrenia, because they can now fully enjoy their lives and the years that had been taken away from themselves. Did it make you laugh, scared etc? • It was quite upsetting hearing about somebodys past experience with schozophrenia, particularly because I hadnt known its effects and impacts on people fully but realising the difficult times in their life with this mental health issue you understand it more and feel extreamly symphathetic because you would usually relate these stories towards yourself, upbringing these upsetting emotions. Would you recommend it to someone else? • I would definitely recommend this to other people, not only for some of the characteristicks that I liked, as such with cienmatography, but I learnt an increadibly lot about schizophrenia that I hadnt already known; learning this could come both very usefull, but also made myself appreciate the things around me a lot more. Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses? • This could be very beneficial for career ambitions and university courses, as documentrys come into working around moving image productions; but the predominant reason I chose this film was because I am currently working my own documentry as a project. Watching and understanding this different documentry style links and has helped me learn the
  • 6. Films 3 FILM TITLE FILM GENRE The Voices Of Men – Jonny White (2020) Documentry feature, Drama Showcase Title Points of view: Yours, mine, theirs Film in brief: • Sharing stories about serious, life changing personal experiences with mental health issues (as such with depressions, anxiety, PTSD, and etc more), it covers men in a raw documentary breaking down the stigma around men and making it clear what extent situations can get to with suicide as so forth. With a numerous amount of anonymous stories being shared in the expression of themselves and their own thoughts, judgements and actions currently against when they were at their peak, this makes a very captivating, emotionally compelling and upsetting genre that is toned around such a serious topic. What did I like about it? • The way that the film has refelcted mens mental health, with an anonoumous style, cinematic slideshow of isolated themes, and a mellow sympathetic soundtrack all works increadibly well to get across the genre and mood being set. • Having the anonoumous identity, which could have been purposefull or appreciative of the 'voices of men', helps emphasise the importance of their voices; almost getting rid of an image and focussing their viewers on their thought processes and its impacts, which targets the experiances being shared more effectively. • A very low saturated, yet cinematic touch to the shots being shown, which are typically of dark abandoned places, helps get across the quite sinister topic of mens mental health, following trhough with sympathetic values that are intended from the director in the audience. What didn’t I like about it? • Other than the fact that the video is cropped to a square size that is a little annoying at times eventhougbh it may be beneficial for social media presence, I would have prefered to have the identity of the person who is present completely anonymous - as such with How did it end up making you feel? • Eventhough it is a very sensative topic, thatb did evidently make me feeling sympathetic anda slightly upset that people have gottent to the circumstances being explored, I did feel quite inspired; hearing such sensative topics, and then relating them to myself and realising how lucky I am makes me appreciative, but more importantly strives myself to get the message being estaablished in the film (stereotypes on men and mental health), because they gotten through those stages and found themselves as a person which I and others respect a lot. Did it make you laugh, scared etc? • Ii didn’t perticularly form any physical emotions, as such with smiling, crying or being scared, but generated a lot of internal compelling emotions instead. Would you recommend it to someone else? • Covering a very serious topic, that not only expresses a lot of emotions linked across the subject, you learn an increadibly lot that improves a understanding about soemthing that occurs amoungst everone at somepoint in their lifetime; given that its very beneficial because you learn a greater understanding at a sensative topic, its also very engaging and emotionally drawing which makes it effective and intreguing, by which I would recommend it to anyone. Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses? • Once again this is a documentry style film, so immediately targets my current project in making my own documentry as I can start to link and attach techniques/methods from it into my own work, but this is categorised as a film, something I aspire to work around in the near future as such with univeristy, my career and upcoming FMP (Final Major Project); given that it’s a film I can analyse and extract a lot of information to support possabilities in university or career oppertunities, but more importantly it investigates and

Going through the different stages in his life, it shows his downfall of his case from many perspectives of friends, family, carers and many more that give off an upsetting and nostalgic impression. What did I like about it? • The structure of the narrative is well put together, following the life of Barry Chambers and is eventual worsening of dementia, as we cover his long-forgotten memories (due to his illness) that links increadibly well to the overall narrative, almost reminding him of the good times that have been lost in his lifetime. • Regarding that it is a 20 minuet docuemntry, having a wide variety of interviews taking place helps keep the viewers engaged and interested as we get the different perspectives from others that prolong a desire to keep on watching. What didn’t I like about it? • I definitely think the effort has been put inot the docuemntry, but the shot quality and cinematography could have been improved; with some wobbly footage, highly unsaturated color grading, and poor framing at times in the film, this conveyed a less proffesional source of information that may not be as trusted as much compared to others. • This may be out of preferance, or just alittle critical, bu I think the interviewer is present too much throughout the documentry; I understand that she may be a part of the narrative, but having her present and speak more too often makes it not as emotionally captivating, in contrast to if the persons husband was the only one telling the story as she has understode it more seriously and is more trustworthy and emotionly seeking. How did it end up making you feel? • Throughout the course of the documentry upsetting and sympathetic moods and genres are established trhough scenes of sadness, in both the nostalgic presence and emotional physical response in some of the personnells, and this iis clear amoungst some of the viwers aswell. It's clear the director wanted some sympathy and emotion to the sceanrio being portrayed around dementia, as it can and has affected many different people and families, and in doing so they have resieved a simular response of guilt, sympathy, and sadness to the film from myself and others. Did it make you laugh, scared etc? • This didn’t perticularly cause any physical reaction to myself, having not fully experianced dementia and or simular disorders, but I would fully understand if in doing so some upsetting emotions and physical reaction to the docuemntry could present itself, as such with crying etc. Would you recommend it to someone else? • I think I would recommend it ot somebody else given that you learn a lot about dementia that willl come usefull at somepoint in time, its very interguing to watch you see the upbrining of dementia in somebody and how it rapidly effects them, and eventhough its 20 minuets, it is worth watching for the many reason said previously. Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses? • This would definitely help with my current projject which includes creating a documentry, as there are many pros in the construction of it I could use across my work simularly, and regarding university and further work it could come beneficial as it comes under the moving imagye rpduction that I aspire to work within; but when considering my FMP (Final Major Project) the use and effective portrayel of emotional reactions from the auidence is helpful, other than that everything else isnt nessesary.
  • 8. Films 5 FILM TITLE FILM GENRE Beep – Max O'Toole (2020) Thriller Showcase Title World class filmmaking: Making more with less Film in brief: • Where Aaron (the main character) goes through his normal day life, everything from as soon as waking up in the morning to going to sleep at night we see him doing everything in fives – checking the door is locked, turning light switches off/on and so on five times each time. Covering obsessive compulsive disorder through these repetitions, we encounter a beeping sound that irritates him one night, pushing him to an extent thought not possible as questioning his own sanity begins to drive him insane and do rash things because of this disorder; presenting the typical and extreme circumstances of obsessive-compulsive disorder, we learn a lot about the character and more his medical situation effectively in this short film. What did I like about it? • I like the overall idea behind the narrative, presenting the effects and livelihoods of people with obsessive compulsive disorder; not only does it show some of the typical signs, but how serious cases can become, which is both informative and intriguing • Some of the camera shot and angles were nice in portraying the scene, particularly when the main character becomes irritated and we see this through non-verbal codes given, therefore using close up shots to emphasise that frustration is smart. What didn’t I like about it? • I definitely think the storyline, and possibly the way it was reflected could have been either improved or simplified to make it easier for the audience; mainly when his obsessive- compulsive disorder is acting up (switching the lights), this isn't emphasised enough, as such with a focus in on his actions. How did it end up making you feel? • I persume the film intended on having a threatening and frightening infleunce on its auidence for the almost pshychotic ending, but because I wasn’t fully understanding of the situation, I was extremely confused and more wierded out. Would you recommend it to someone else? • I don’t think I would recommend this film, because of its very confusing narrative that easily mistakable; but the fact that it covers a serious topic, once realised, of obsessive- compulsive disorder, it is quite informative to the emntal disorder that could come helpful eventually. Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses? • I can't link this film to either of my career ambitions, current project, and university courses, given that the narrative and style are somewhat poorly achieved and don’t include anything reasonable to include within my own work, but it may link to my FMP; I have already established that I want to get across a horror/thriller reflection of a film in my FMP, and this is somewhat present in 'Beep' when characterizing a pshychotic person in many sound implimentations, shot types, and actions perticularly, featutres which I could link and demonnstrate effectively to the genres.
  • 9. Films 6 FILM TITLE FILM GENRE Shelter – Ruairi Wright (2020) Thriller, Drama Showcase Title World class filmmaking: Making more with less Film in brief: • Where 2 hungry and cold homeless people seek 'shelter', they sneak into a supposed empty house to gather supplies of their needs; all goes well until a housekeeper appears, creating an unsettling situation for the younger boy as the experienced older homeless person does some rash decisions, resolving the un-nervy predicament as the younger guy leaves single-handedly with the two others in bad positions. What did I like about it? • The cinematography and how things are captured are exceptionally balanced with the colour grading present, creating a cinematic atmosphere to the film that is nessecary and effective given that its meant to be engaging, integuing and captivating to the audience for it to be succesful. • The script for all of the characters is very well done, representing each character to the point, and seems very natural to listen to; not only this but the way the actors exemplify themselves when speaking is very beliavable and understanding to some of the situations, making it more engaging and desirable. What didn’t I like about it? • The narrative is well structured, giving a clear insight and view to the situation and whats happening, but towards the end when they find themselves in a difficult situation, its abit confusing and could have been managed better as their actions are increadibly unnatural to the scenario – knocking out the visitor and then knocking out (possibly killing) the more experianced homeless guy just wouldn’t happen. How did it end up making you feel? • Throughout the film I felt increadibly anxious, waiting for somebody to return home and cause an undesirable situation for the characters as its expected but surprising at the same time. In addition to this, I felt very threatened from especially the older guy who had both a very dominant and strong vocabularly and presence to the other characters. Did it make you laugh, scared etc? • The film did make me jump at times when the maintenance guy was knocked over by a large smash against his head, which was effective for the sense of unpredictability that makes it more engaging and dramatic. Would you recommend it to someone else? • I would recommend this to others, for its captivating narrative, satisfying cinematography, and engaging unpredictability that makes this film sublime and easy watching for the viewers. Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses? • I definitely think this film can link towards my career ambitions, FMP, and university courses with wanting to work around moving image production and given that there are a range of features and technical ability I can link and re-use in some of my work to gain a greater interest and understanding from my audience. Regarding my current project, many of the characteristicks can't be linked across a doucmentry (my current project), but the cinematography layout, shot types, and colour grading could come usefull with some methods that include montages, slideshows and emotive images to create tension and persuation.
  • 10. Films 7 FILM TITLE FILM GENRE Risk It For A Biscuit – Daniel Cappere (2020) Animation, Comedy, Thriller Showcase Title World class filmmaking: Making more with less Film in brief: • About at young gingerbread man, the story shows an intrigued gingerbread boy that ventures outside into the kitchen, expecting an exciting adventure this quickly changes as its pleasantly surprised by a dark, more sinister world. Now with a much clearer understanding, the gingerbread boy seeks out the safety of his home in an escape back through shifts and turns encountering the deadly nature of outside the house. What did I like about it? • The animation aspect of the film is very well created, with not suspicious jumps or fluctuation in the movements and or scene changes, that makes it almost satisfying to watch and non-the-less engaging. • I perticularly like the music soundtracks and individual sound implementations for the gingerbread's movement, this makes it catchy at some moments, but also very dramatic and encouraging of the moods/emotions being portrayed in the animation, such as with either encountering the large kitchen scenario and dying slice of bread. • The narrative that has been chosen for the gingerbread boy and his adventures in the kitchen are both very captivating and smart of the producer, portraying an ongoing unpredictable storyline that holds a desire to carry on watching, whilst in addition it reflects current worldwide crises with promoting people to stay at home and covid-19. What didn’t I like about it? • I had only identified its purpose of reflecting covid-19 situations to staying at home trhough the synopsis, so I think this could have been portrayed and represented abit easier for the audience to have a greater understanding of the films purpose, otherthan just being about a gingerbread boy who goes on a scary adventure that is evidently reflected very well in the animation. How did it end up making you feel? • When stuck outside in the kitchen during the film I definitely felt sorry for the gingerbread boy, as you had come to realise, he didn’t expect and understand the circumstances of not being able to leave like everybody else untill having left. Would you recommend it to someone else? • I think I would only recommend this for entertainment purposes, otherwise I wouldn’t as its quite unessecary and you don’t perticularly learn a lot about anything when watching this animation. In addition, the film is only 5 minuets long so doesn’t keep you engaged that easily from watching it fully. Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses? • Unfortunately, I don’t think I can link this across any of my projects, career ambitions, and or universioty courses because it is highly animation focused, but the use of sound to distinguish moods, genres and the scenarios could come beneficial; especially in audio- based production, that may become apparent to my courses, and or film production where foley or som, ething simular is nessecary.
  • 11. Films 8 FILM TITLE FILM GENRE Rich – Aaron Good (2020) Drama Showcase Title World class filmmaking: Making more with less Film in brief: • With an old guy called 'rich', we have him hiding the fact he recently found out about how hes become terminally ill. Keeping the situation to himself, his carer finds out when a letter is discovered, keeping her anxious, upset, and worried for his sake as 'rich' has suspended treatment. Keeping this at bay, and considering the options, Elizabeth (carer) has to come to terms with his decision-making situation, finishing with an incline that he had died soon after resolving the story in an upsetting way. What did I like about it? • The scripting of the film had been done to a good standard, making it seem natural that makes it more beliavable, and with the recognition of a narrative that is intentionally upsetting, the good scripting makes it more emotionally driven and engaging. • The cinematography once again was something I admired in this short film, using the correct shot types effectively to portray and draw an emotional reaction from the audience, good use of layouting the shot to present the scenario, and the demonstration colour grading helps emphasise and establish the characters of scene more seriously. What didn’t I like about it? • Eventhough majority of the script was natural, beliavable and well done, i think the scripting of the priest from the church scene could have been done better, for it seems unatural, slightly baised and stereortypical; this only makes it less unbeliavable and almost comedic in a sense that is not needed fro a film on this topic. • I perticularly think some more sound implimentations, effects, or soundtracks could have been used to add to the effect, emphasising the situation or specific actions that engage the audience or tell the story with key aspects highlighted more than others. How did it end up making you feel? • Being honest I felt alittle annoyed that he hadnt taken the treatment to extend his lifetime, but I was more unerstanding as the narrative went on longer that he just wanted to be with his wife, creating an upsetting and sympathetic feeling, this had only been drawn out through the emotive structure, cinematography, and music that supported these feelings in their auidence. Would you recommend it to someone else? • There are a lot of greate things about this film that supports itself, as such with the cinematic touch and consistent engagement because of the narrative and so forth, but I wouldn’t recommend it; the film is captivating and emotionally compelling, but I think it's too long drawn out over abouts 15 minuets and doesn’t teach you much otherthan the story of this specific person that isnnt beneficial, so it's only purpose is for entertianment in which it exceeds that aspect only. Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses? • I think this would strongly link across all of my possible university courses, career ambitions, and FMP, mainly because the film holds many charactertisticks that I will or could use in my own work to establish its form, but admiring to work around moving image production , this falls into that category thoroughly. • Acknowledging my current project, which is creating my own factual documentry, I don’t think I can't relate this perticular film in any way; theres isnt any techniques or methods, processes or features that I could reflect in my own work from this film to benefit my own project.
  • 12. Films 9 FILM TITLE FILM GENRE Bringing Home The Blubber – Molly Adams (2020) Documentry, Showcase Title Real Lives: Creating An Authentic Documentry Film in brief: • Following the lifestyle of a Greenlandic seal hunter at a poorer lifestlye than most, we experience his day to day life hunting and living off seal blubber. Following his life we encounter the dark times, happy things, and a life of fulfilment and isolation on the arctic ocean. What did I like about it? • The docuemntry itself is extremely unique and informative, giving us an insight to something to most people will not ever experience, which is evermore engaging and intreguing against other sources • The wide variety in shots, cinematography present, and strucutre of the documentry is ever changing, keeping the viewers constantely engaged and interested that is additionally effective for maintaining a desire to carry on watching What didn’t I like about it? • Eventhough its extremely effective having no background music and or sound effects because it makes it more engaging, personally directed and focussing to whats being shown or said, I think having somesort of audio could either help emphasise important things to the audience, or add some value of identity some it's more simular to other documentrys. How did it end up making you feel? • Throughout the course of the documentry I was just particularly interested in the comparison of livelihoods between the diffferant backgrounds, not really demonstrating much as of feelings but curiosity; however towards the end when hearing more of this persons specific story, I was extremely sympathetic and slightly overwhelemd when you hear the tough experiances hes been involved around, especially considering how we see in the documentry his physical reaction and the effects its drawn onto him. Would you recommend it to someone else? • The fact that this documentry is both extremely intreguing, informative and quite cultural of these icelandic livelihoods, and given that its very well structurred, filmed, and sourced from makes it very engaging and entertaining to watch, meaning I would definitely recommend this to others for these reasons. Can you link it to your project/FMP/career ambitions/University courses? • Recognising that’s it’s a docuemntry, holding many features and techniques that I could resembel in my own work, makes it immediately link to my current project (making my own factual documentry). • With referance to my FMP, career ambitions, and possible university courses, this film doesn’t notebly link in as many form factors, with different techniques and methods to show of certain situations or intended meanings, making it less likey to link; but acknowledging the fact that it still includes some moving image processes, like cinematography and sturcture, this can link through.

I origionally focused on myself, moving aside other people's perspectives, creating the product of my own thoughts and opinions on it, but when undergoing practasis that include auidence research, research, and planning more so than others, I developed a greater understanding at how nessecary this apsect is; recognising its importance, and wanting to improve my ability in a far strentch of skills and processes through my years in education, the 'point of view: yours, mine, thiers' showcase stode out to myself and seems a great start to broaden some competence in this area. Showcase Screenings: • Too Old (short film) – With an old man who arrives at his daughter's house for tea, he finds out they're leaving the next day on a trip that he hadn't been invited for because he's 'too old', which therefore evidently gets angry, leaves, and precedes to go to the pub in which him and his friend arrange a bungee jumping experience to prove his point (of being right against everyone else's judgement). Going to the bridge location after boosting his ego and judgement on the situation, he then backs out from doing the bungee jump, leaving a comedic nature and genre behind as he realises in a lacklusta moment. • The Voices (documentary) - With Pauline going into town and celebrating her engagement, this documentary follows her story from a young age when being diagnosed with schizophrenia and its apparent worsening as she grew in age, hearing voices, going to a psychotic hospital and getting rash treatments (electric shocks etc), and the overall impacts it has had on her early to late life. • The Voices Of Men (documentary) - Sharing stories about serious, life changing personal experiences with mental health issues (as such with depressions, anxiety, PTSD, and etc more), it covers men in a raw documentary breaking down the stigma around men and making it clear what extent situations can get to with suicide as so forth.
