2. Selection of Material Handling
Equipment
• Selection of material handling equipment is
an important decision as it affects both the
cost and efficiency of handling system.
• Requires the attaining of proper balance between
the production problem, the capabilities of the
equipment available, and the human element
involved. The ultimate aim is to arrive at the lowest
cost per unit of material handled.

3. Selection of Material Handling
Equipment
• The following factors are to be taken into
account while selecting the material handling
equipment:
• 1. Properties of the Material
Whether the material is solid, liquid or gas,
and in what size, shape and weight it is to be
moved, are important decisions
-If the material is fragile, corrosive or toxic

4. Selection of Material Handling Equipment
(contd..)
• 2. Layout and Characteristic of the building
Another important factor is availability of space for
handling. eg. Low-level ceiling many prevent the use
of hoist or cranes
Presence of supporting columns in awkward
places can restrict the size of material handling
equipment
If the building is multi-storeyed, chutes or ramp for
industrial trucks may be used.

5. Selection of Material Handling
Equipment (contd..)
• 3. Production Flow
• If the flow is fairly constant between two fixed
position that are not likely to be changed, fixed
equipments such as conveyors or chutes can be
successfully used.
• Moving equipments such as trucks would be preferable
when the flow is not constant and the direction changes
occasionally from one point to another

Equipment (contd..)
• 4. Cost Considerations
This is the most important consideration in
taking the final decision.
-Initial investment and operating and
maintenance cost are the major costs to be
considered.

7. Selection of Material Handling
Equipment (contd..)
• 5. Nature of Operations
Selection of equipment also depends on the nature of
operations like:
Whether handling is temporary or permanent,
Whether the flow is continuous or intermittent, and
Material flow pattern- horizontal or vertical, etc

• 6. Engineering Factors
Engineering factors such as door, ceiling
dimensions, floor space, floor conditions
and structural strengths are also important
factors taken into consideration

Equipment (contd..)
• 7. Equipment reliability
Reliability of the equipment and supplier
reputation and the after sale services plays
an important role in selecting the equipment.

Equipment (contd..)
8. Some other Equipment factors to be taken into
consideration may well also include the following:
• Adaptability: the load carrying and movement
characteristics of the equipment should fit the
materials handling problem.
• Flexibility: Where possible the equipment should have
flexibility to handle more than one material, referring
either to class or size.
• Load capacity: Equipment selected should have great
enough load-carrying characteristics to do the job
effectively, yet should not be too large and result in
excessive operating costs.

Equipment (contd..)
• Other Equipment factors (contd....)
• Supervision required: As applied to
equipment selection, this refers to the degree
of automaticity designed into the equipment.
• Ease of maintenance: Equipment selected
should be easily maintained at reasonable
cost.
• Environment: Equipment selected must
conform to any environment regulations, etc

12. Selection of Material Handling
Equipment (contd..)
Some other factors include:
• Type of product
• Volume of product
• Size and shape of the product
• Sequence of process
• Distance to be moved
• Power available
• Method of manufacturing
• Production rate
• Space available
• Type of container etc.

13. Need for Mechanization
• In India, the improvement in social awareness has
made the idea of manual labour unpalatable.
• The damages to property and the materials
handled, there are several reasons for the need
to an introduction for mechanized storage and
handling.
• The origin of mechanization can be traced back to
the use of lever principle and implements, such
as crow bar, rollers, tongs, hooks, etc.

14. Introduction to Important choices
• Cost-benefit Analysis: The best handling
method is to avoid handling altogether. When
handling is necessary; a detailed cost-benefit
analysis has to be carried out before deciding
on the choice of handling equipment.
• The cost can be broadly divided into 2
categories:
• (a) Capital cost
• (b) Operating and maintenance costs.
(Experience indicates that these cost generally move in opposite
directions)
