With limited personnel, time, and resources, the MSU Library needed to get creative in our response to a growing number of instruction requests for a specific class. Hear how the library collaborated with faculty and instructors from that course to develop a new approach. See an overview of our new model to offer instructor training sessions on how to teach research in the classroom, which ultimately expanded our library instructional reach.

Instruction Model for Survey Courses
Library integration with: US 101,BGEN 104
US101 evolution
Previously: taught each section of US101 in person
The Challenge: teaching in person was becoming unsustainable
Fall 2020: 31 sections, 3.5 FT Librarians
Spring 2021: Embed online modules created by the library

4. BACKGROUND
Writing 101 at MSU-Bozeman
Fall 2021
82 total sections
16 official Library Instruction requests; 1 hour instruction, 1 hour prep for each request
4.5 FTE librarians
The Challenge
Sustaining individual instructor requests in Fall 2021
Inconsistency across sections; some got instruction, some didn’t
The solution
Integrate Library Instruction in ALL Writ 101 courses
Spring 2022
57 sections
26 instructors

From Writ 101 Instructors' Perspective
Instructor Quote:
"Getting more familiar with the resources available here and feeling
more comfortable navigating them myself allows me to feel more
comfortable using them in my classroom. I'm also so grateful for
the lesson plans and online tutorials, which I've been using
religiously since finding them."

17. WRAP UP
Takeaways & benefits of new model:
Increased our instructional reach with small & limited team
New assessment opportunities
Learn from other instructors during the training sessions
Next steps: modify the training series (and accompanying lesson plans,
activities, etc.) to target online courses and online instruction specifically;
offer another round of campus-wide instructor training series on Teaching
Research in the Online Classroom

Jacquie:
All freshman take one survey course their first year, and there are a small handful of survey courses students choose from. The library was already working with two of the courses with the most students and sections, including University Studies 101, and BGEN101 for business majors. For example, we used to go into each section of US101 in person to teach a research section, but that became unsustainable with a small team of librarians. For example, in fall 2020, we tought over 31 sections with only the equivalent of 3.5 Full time librarians, So in spring 2021, the library worked with the US101 program to identify and create online research modules that the course instructors now embed and integrate in the course, which we have done each semester since.
16 official requests averages to 21 hours of instruction with 21 hours of prep....just for Writ 101.
5 librarians managing the Writ 101 classes: 2 TT, 3 NTT with one part-time
Challenges: Requests coming in with not much turnaround, coordinating scheduling, consistency across instruction and sharing our instructional knowledge; modalities (in-person, online, hybrid) reach; not all sections can be reached with our current staffing
IDEA! Using US 101 model to integrate library instruction in all courses. Let's set up a meeting!
Jacquie:
And then a similar challenge arose with the WRIT 101 course. The library had tried to establish a partnership similar to our partnership with US101, but it hadn’t gotten off the ground, so to speak. So in Fall 2021, the library received at least 16 official library instruction requests, just for writ 101 sections. Even though the reqeusts were all similar, they each took on average about 1 hour of instruction time and 1 hour of prep time, with only the equivalent of 4.5 full time librarians, 3 NTT and 2 TT. Again, this was not sustainable for our small team, considering there were 82 sections and we could have received even more requests, and it was not offering a consistent approach to the students across those sections – some got library instruction, and some didn’t. Therefore, we reached out the WRIT 101 program leaders again, asking if we could find a way to integrate library instruction into all sections of writ 101 courses, starting in the Spring 2022 which had 57 sections and 26 different instructors.
