4. Textual Analysis
• The opening of the short film is a shot of the sea, with
the camera at water level, bobbing up and down out of
the water. This is effective as we don’t know which
perspective the camera should be at, the first
impression is that the camera is from the angle of a
surf board, however the surfer doesn’t arrive at the sea
for a few minutes.
• The pace of the film reflects the main characters
thought process at that time, he is reminiscing about
what he misses about life outside of jail. While we hear
him we see, who we assume is his son, doing the
activities he is describing in such detail.
5. Textual Analysis cont.
• The use of sound adds to the effect of the camera
technique. The use of almost silence in the prison
room shows that the prisoners thoughts are with
the sea, which we can hear quietly with the
prisoner but louder when we cut to the surfer.
• The film itself is not entirely explained as we
don’t really know why the man is in prison and
we only get hints to the identity of the young
surfer. This adds to the mystery started by the
mans’ storytelling.
