Dear Judges:
My name is Jessica Hieber. For my senior project I chose to make my prom dress. I chose to
make my prom dress because of the amount of money I could save and the fact that I would be
able to create a dress that no one else would be wearing. At the beginning of the senior project, I
set goals for myself. The first goal was to make a plan for when I should have certain parts of the
dress completed and to meet those individual goals. My other goal was to finish the dress before
prom.
For my research paper, I researched why teenage girls dress provocatively. The topic relates to
my product because many of the prom dresses that I saw in stores were provocative which made
me question why a young woman would want to dress this way. Through my research I found
that the media is one of the main reasons why young women feel the need to dress
inappropriately. Throughout my senior project I overcame many obstacles including difficulty in
scheduling times to meet with my facilitators, finding materials, and sewing without the use of a
pattern. Overall, I was able to complete my project on time.
Fashion designers need to set themselves apart from the crowd. A focus on modest clothing
would make their designs stand out from the other designers because many designers are creating
clothing that is risqué. My research helped me realize that the potential for a modest clothing
designer is great because there are not many in the fashion industry. Throughcreating my prom
dress, I have learned that I like to work with my hands, but a career in the fashion industry in not
for me. Next year I will be attending Johnson and Wales University to pursue a career in culinary
arts.
The senior project helped me discover my strengths and weaknesses. Although creating my prom
dress was extremely stressful, it helped me realize what career I would like to pursue.
