standardisedlayout,subjecttoperiodicalreview;
•TheinsertionofcopygivenbyEditors,andthe
creationofanygraphiccomponents.
IneachBlitzmagazinethereareaseriesofunique
articles.Thereisalwaysonefeaturedoublepage
spreadthat,inthemajorityofthetimes,coincides
withthecoverdesign.TheBlitzDesignerisrequired
toattendformalandinformalconsultationfor
discussionofpastandpresentmagazines.Inthese
meetingstheDesignerisrequiredtoshowideasfor
futuremagazinesbybringsketches,inspiringlayout
ideassourcedfromothermagazineetc.relevanttothe
audienceofBlitz.Sourcingandresearchintographic
designwaskeytocreatinginterestingpagelayouts.
TheDesigneralsohastobeabletoworkunderstrict

STARTING IN THE ROLES THE TEAM MEMBERS WERE
TRAINED IN OH&S PROCEDURES AND BULLYING AND
HARASSMENT TRAINING. THEY WERE THEN ABLE TO
CONDUCT DISPUTE RESOLUTION, BY ASSESSING THE
SITUATION, REFLECTING ON OUR TEAM’S PRACTICES,
ASKING QUESTIONS AND EVALUATING CHANGING OR
IMPLEMENTING THESE CHANGES FOR WHAT’S BEST FOR
THE MAGAZINE AND THE REPUTATION OF ARC.

My internship with Arc as the Blitz magazine
Designer gave me many opportunities. It helped
me build on my experience in print design and
provided an opportunity to learn and work in a
team environment in a large organization. This has
allowed me to develop my skills and add new work
to my portfolio.
In the role of the blitz designer the organization
gave me a tremendous amount of independence
when creating layouts. They were all of my own
work. Additionally this year they wanted to create
a re-design of the magazine so I was in-charge
of creating new layouts and a new feel to this
magazine as a template for the years to come. The
role allowed me to implement theory and practice
that I have learnt at COFA. With my knowledge of
style rules and knowledge of grid design I was able
to create and learn in the process of my internship.
I can say my layouts from the beginning of the
year to the end of the year have greatly improved.
With the wide variety of topic in each magazine the
role allowed versatilely in creating a wide range
graphics in the publication design. This experience
is of great value to me in establishing a career as a
designer in this area of work.
As a young designer intent on establishing a career
in publication design, a field dominated by large
publishers, this experience was very important to
me. The nature of fortnightly publishing drove me
to manage my time effectively and to work and
accommodate changes. I strived to keep the design
process constant and as efficient as I could.
The content of the magazine was aimed at student
and ‘student life’ this was the main focus of my
design. It led me to research how other publication
with a similar focus had tacked there designs
and what designs appealed to the target market.
Because of the diversity of the student audience
the role encourage me to approach a wide array
of visual designs. I would try and create visual
elements that projected the voice of the article to
the students reading, and cover designs that would
make students pick it up.
Coming to an end of my internship has further
cemented my need and passion for publication
design and has opened my eyes to what I want to do
after completing my studies. My aim now is to gain
even more experience in the publication industry
while studying, and then hopefully, through this
experience, land a job in the industry.
