7. How did the Colombian
independence take place?
(Memoriales de Agravios)
Since 1810, numerous boards of government were created in
New Granada.
On November 20, 1809, Camilo
Torres drafted a document known as
the grievance memorial, in which
the criollos defended their right to
participate directly in the
government, to have equal rights as
Spaniards born in America and to
participate in decisions that Will be
taken.
8. July 20: cry of independence?
Antonio Morales suggested borrowing a vase from the
Spanish Jose Gonzalez Llorente, under the pretext of
decorating the place of reception of the commissioner,
where the meeting would take place.
It is usually thought that July 20 was the day when
our country finally became independent from Spain.
But, as we have seen several meetings were formed
before that of Santafé. Besides that day of 1810, the
criollos also did not intend to become independent
definitively of the crown.
Taking advantage of the arrival of Villavicencio, on the
night of July 19, several critics of Santa Fe, such as
Francisco José de Caldas, Camilo Torres, Antonio Morales
and Jose Acevedo devised a plan to clarify the differences
between them and the Spanish and thus to form a revolt
Market day.
9. Although viceroy Amar and Borbon refused to establish
the town hall (cabildo), the criollos, in the presence of
the town, installed the supreme junta of Government
of Santafe.
As planned on the morning of
July 20, when he borrowed
the vase, Gonzalez refused,
which the criollos took
advantage of to start the
revolt.
During the afternoon, a crowd assaulted the houses
and businesses of the Spaniards, and at night an
open town (cabildo) began, it means, a meeting of
people in which they discussed themes of interest
for the community. In this council, the people
demanded to name a meeting (nombrar una junta)
that would allow the Neogranadinos to participate
in political decisions.
