ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Important basic information you should know
about Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Program.
1. The Grant is a non-refundable seed capital of $5,000.00 i.e. N1,525,000
(One Million, Five Hundred and Twenty Five thousand Naira) or its local
currency equivalent in any African country
2. The portal https://application.tonyelumelufoundation.org/ opens midnight of
January 1st 2018 and closes midnight 1st March 2018
3. It is open to 54 African Countries
4. Age – you must be above 18years old and there is no upper limit age restriction.
5. Your business/Idea must not be more than 3 years old for existing businesses. It
can be a new business /idea
6. 1000 businesses will be selected annually from 54 African countries;

7. 1000 businesses will be created yearly for the next 10 years to make-up
their goal to create 10,000 businesses.
8. At the close of TEF Forum, you will access the grant.
9. Your idea and write-up must be feasible, scalable, have market potential,
demonstrate good financial model and show your leadership potential and
entrepreneurial skills.
10. Best 1,000 business ideas will be selected across Africa, without
preference to host country.
11. Successful applicants will be notified on the 22nd of March.
12. Closing date of the application is March 1st 2016

CRITERIAL FOR SELECTION

• How do I apply?
• All Applications must be submitted ONLINE through the APPLICATION PORTAL. You must complete an
application form by answering a series of mandatory questions and uploading additional documents and
identification materials. After submission, you will receive a confirmation email of receipt within 1 working
day.
• What if my business is a partnership?
• Only one nominated person from the business or the partnership is able to join the programme.
• Can I apply offline?
• No. All Applications must be submitted online through the application portal.
• How are selected applicants chosen to join the program
• Selection of the applicants will take place from the close of the Application on March 1st, by the Tony
Elumelu Foundation and an independent Selection Committee appointed by the Foundation, against the
specified selection criteria.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation itself is located in Nigeria, does this give preference to Nigerian
entrepreneurs?
• No. The TEF Entrepreneurship Programme is a Pan-African programme and open to business ideas from all
the 54 African countries from which we will select the best business ideas for the programme.

• If my start-up is selected to join the programme, when and how will I be informed?
• Successful applicants will be notified on the 22nd of March, via the email address designated in the initial
application. The list of selected entrepreneurs will also be posted on the TEF Website.
• What additional information must I supply once my business is selected?
• If Applicants are offered a place in the Programme, Applicants will be expected to:
• complete a self-declaration form,
• provide proof of valid ID,
• provide a personal bank statement from the past 6 months,
• provide a statement of current personal debts,
• provide a reference from an employer, bank and/or academic institutions;
• Provide business bank account details (For UBA present countries, it must be a UBA account)
• Why was my application unsuccessful?
• Since inception we have received over 158,000 applications for the limited spaces on the programme, while we can
only accept 1000 entrepreneurs each year. Here are a few possible reasons why your application was not successful:
• You did not complete the application
• Your business or idea is more than 3 years old
• Your business or idea is not based in Africa
• Your descriptions in one or more sections of the application was not clearly described
• Your application did not meet other eligibility criteria
• You scored low in one or more of the selection criteria.

• How can I improve my chances next year?
• Ensure that you review the selection criteria in the next programme cycle and be sure to describe your
business plan or idea such that every aspect of the business or idea (i.e. description, market, customer
acquisition, financials etc.) is fully covered.
• Is there a waiting list for Applicants who could join the programme?
• Yes there is a waiting list. If any of the selected 1000 do not claim their places by the set deadline, the
next best entrepreneur from the waiting list will be chosen before commencement of the programme
cycle.
• If not selected, can I reapply in another programme cycle?
• Yes. We will open the platform for applications on January 1 every year. Each applicant will be required to
put in a fresh application. We believe the elapsed time should serve to refresh your interest in your
entrepreneurial objectives, and there might be new developments to include in the application.
• What if English is not my first language?
• The application portal will have functionality in English, French and Portuguese.
• What information/identification do I need to provide in my application?
• You must answer all the mandatory questions in the application form

• You can upload Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, JPEG and PNG doc.
• Are there application associated fees?
• No. The Tony Elumelu Foundation does not charge any applicants a fee for applying to the programme.

• The 7 pillars of the TEF Entrepreneurship Programme are a unique, holistic system of effective and intensive support.
• STARTUP ENTERPRISE TOOLKIT
• A 12-week programme to equip startups with basic skills required to launch and run their businesses at early growth stage. It covers several topics
including starting and scaling a business, business development, marketing strategy, effective management, product design etc.
• ONLINE MENTORING
• Our model provides a credible technology-enabled platform for access to world-class mentors from across Africa and internationally. The mentors
have faced similar challenges and are able to steer our startups on a successful path.
• ONLINE RESOURCE LIBRARY
• A bespoke compendium of materials, case studies, videos, tasks, templates and interesting articles. This includes the 12-week series on the TOE
Way, shared concurrently. It expounds the core business values of the Founder, with an aim to building the right character in the entrepreneurs.
• MEET-UPS
• Country and state-level meet ups to ignite the entrepreneurial fire and promote close interaction within the programme. These selections facilitate
personal exchanges, formation of strong ties with one another and with local hubs and key government agencies.
• TEF ENTREPRENEURSHIP FORUM
• A dedicated world-class annual Forum that brings together key persons in the African and global entrepreneurial eco-system with an aim to
leverage our convening powers to promote African entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship; and to connect with local and regional decision makers.
• SEED CAPITAL
• Each entrepreneur receives a non-returnable seed capital of $10,000 paid in two tranches. The aim is to support early growth, proof-of-concept
and/or enhance their business operation. This seed capital is tied to clear milestones in a well-articulated and relevant business plan.
• TEF ALUMNI NETWORK
• The alumni network comprises all Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurs, following the successful completion of the 12-week training programme. The online
and offline network promotes sector-based and geography-based communities, collaboration across Africa as well as a healthy competition.

Mentors
• Mentors are a vital part of The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme and will be selected
for their expertise, passion and alignment to the programme vision and mission.
• Mentorship in The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme is an out-of-the-classroom
experience for close guidance to encourage the personal learning and development of entrepreneurial skills
in the selected applicants within a closed mentorship and learning platform.
• The process of becoming a mentor will begin with registration, which will be subject to review. Following
acceptance for mentorship, access to the mentorship and learning platform with its one thousand mentees
will be given. Matching the mentees with mentors will be by a combination of requests from mentees and
administrative matching to ensure best fit.
• As a mentor, you will work with up to three assigned mentees in a task-based learning forum for 12 weeks
where you will encourage each mentee to go out and implement each learning module.
• The platform also features forums for both peer-to-peer and inter-group discussions and an easy integration
of social media profiles (e.g. on LinkedIn) to facilitate sharing and networking.
• Mentors complete an online registration form about their previous business experiences, interests and
motivations. This information is used to match mentors with selected entrepreneurs, based on their needs
and mentoring objectives.
• A mentor can be matched with up to four mentees.
• Mentors commit to a minimum of 4 hours per month per mentee for the first three months from April to
June and 2 hours per month for the next six months from July to December.
• Mentoring sessions will be delivered virtually through the Programme portal at times agreed upon by both
mentor and entrepreneur.
