Jobs in a record label
1. The different types of jobs in a record label
CEO
A CEO of a record label company gets the final say in the directions of the
marketing, the music distribution, etc. Depending on the size of the company,
the CEO will handle more jobs independently or have a middle management
staff. A CEO will be in charge of how the music is distributed and finds the best
method for getting publicity for the label.
Vice President
A vice president can be for just a department of a company or the whole
company (depending on the size of the record label. A vice president for an
independent record label will oversee the general daily events; they will also
have to do things such as scouting for new artist, finding distributors and
calling radio stations.
Business Affair/Legal
This department takes care of all the legal action. Its main role is
negotiation/closing all master recording, publishing rights and licences. As well
as, live event contracts and general business agreements. It also give guidance
on legal issues with the company including employment law and human
resource issues.
A&R
The A&R department in a record label are in charge of finding talent and
overseeing the recording process and marketing/promotion. The can sign
talent that is new or has already been around. They will then advise the artist
with different thins including image, getting them the right producer and even
sometimes choosing the songs the artist will record. A&R staff will go to clubs
and other areas of this type to find the talent.
Artist Development
This used to be a more popular job before the late 1980s and isn’t commonly
used by all artist today. However, the role of an artist development was to
support the creative side of a music artist. They help name the musicians and
create a trademark to prevent others using it. This department is now mainly
used at the beginning of the artists career.
2. Marketing
This department will do market research and analysis to know the best
methods and tactics of marketing and selling the record labels albums. They
also brief radio stations and trade magazines on record sales. The department
also keeps tract of the demand of albums wanted and makes sure shops have
enough stocked to keep up with the demand.
Online/New Media
This is a new aspect of the modern record label structure. With the new
growing modern world of the 21th
century, social media is becoming a popular
way to advertise. In this department, they will produce and promote music
videos and be in control of the artist’s social media presence.
Art department
This department is also in control of the more creative side of the artist. They
create the artwork/designs that goes into the in the album and advertising.
They are also responsible for the CD/album cover.
Publicity/Promotions
This department is responsible for getting the artist talked about and known.
They will set up photoshoots and organise the artist being broadcasted on
different types of social media, including radio and articles
Sales
Sales is in control of the different shops and platforms the music will be sold.
They sort out the prices and sometimes stock of the CD’s/videos. They can
suggest when more advertising needs to be done or when more stock needs to
be in.
