CEO
The CEO is in charge of the business of the whole company.
Vice president
There are vice presidents in charge of different departments within the
company.
Business affairs/accounting
Very simply, this department deals with the business side, taking care of the
finances.
Legal
Responsible for all contracts made between the company and artist as well as
other companies, any legalities that need resolving would go through this
department.
A&R
Often considered most glamorous, the people in this department are charged
of discovering new talent. They work very closely with new artists, doing
everything from helping select songs to deciding where the album will be
recorded. These people link the artist to other departments within the
company.
Artist development
Responsible for planning an artist’s career this department works hard to
promote and publicize the artist throughout. Record labels are recently
referring to their artists as products. This is because the emphasis in the
current music business is to promote artists heavily early on, as opposed to
thinking about their entire career.
Marketing
This department creates the general plan for how the artist will be promoted.
They help coordinate plans of the promotion, sales and publicity departments.
2. Online/new media
This area deals with the newer aspects of the business, including production
and promotion of music videos for the artist. It’s also often responsible for
helping create a presence on the internet
Art department
This department is in charge of all the artwork that goes along with producing
an album, including cover art and displays at stores.
Publicity/ promotions
This department’s job is to make sure the artist has a wide audience
awareness. Its aimis to get the songs on the radio in order to ensure the future
success of the company and artist.
Sales
They oversee all the retail activities of the label, concentrating on building
relationships with record stores and other mass-market retailers. They
combine their efforts with the major label’s distribution company as well as
communicating regularly with the publicity and promotion departments at the
company.
