Owner/president
An owner of a record label organises marketing and the general direction the
label should head into, for example what type or artists they are going to sign
to the label. The CEO mustalso havegood communication with board
members and increase financial performance.
Vice president
Most record labels have severalvice-presidents who manage a certain part of
the record label (promotion, marketing etc.) and makesure day to day running
of their department is smooth and they help to build the label stronger as they
only haveto focus on one part of the label whereas if there was only 1 vice-
president they would have to do more work as they would have to overseeall
the differentdepartments of the label.
Business affairs/accountancy
A business affairs manager oversees theperformanceof staff, business
recommendation and budgetary issues. They may also play an active role in
decisions by giving a detailed reportabout the working or operation of the
organisation.
Legal
A legal person in a record label deals with all the legal side of the business such
as dealing with licenses, possibly dealing with people who try to sue the
business and even dealing with the possibility of suing people if they use your
music. They could also be accountable with dealing with the tax side of the
business and making sure that the label provides accounts of their income and
that they pay tax.
A&R
This role could involvefinding new artists to feature in other artists in the
labels tracks, finding new talent to bring into the label which can be:
Musicians, Artists and producers. And they could also type out the credits for a
song with publishing houses and real names.
Artist Development
2. The job of Artistdevelopment which is not as common nowadays is to develop
an artist’s musicalskills so that they are ready for the big time, however
nowadays record labels sign people who they presumeare already ready for
the big time and don’t need to be developed for this to happen.
Marketing
Marketing in a record label involves the promotion and exploitation of an
artist’s output, this could involve promoting your artist through interviews,
events and potentially merchandiserelated to the artist.
Online/media
This involves people who design and manage the labels website and potentially
run social media accounts on facebook,twitter, Instagram which keep fans up
to date on whatis happening and when they are holding events and new
releases by the label, also it can include promoting the label through the use of
social media.
Art department
The art department of a record label is someone who is in charge of creating
the art for the label and that can include designing art for the website, logos
for the label and possible album covers for artists and if the label creates an
album they might design the front cover of the album.
Publicity/Promotions
This role can include promoting the label through social media, posters, event
and even by hiring popular artists to the label who will make gain publicity for
the label, they could also promoteartists who are in the labels albums and
arrangeevents wherethere is an opportunity for the label to increase in
popularity.
Sales
This involves dealing with the sales of merchandisethat they label might offer,
dealing and managing the sales of tickets if the label organises gigs. Also they
could possibly help by dealing with sales and distribution of artists albums who
are in the record label.
