3. Geonames and standardization of
geographical names in the Czech Republic
• Standardization began on topographic maps 1:75 000 in
the former Czechoslovakia before WW II
• First update was realized in 1951
• Names applied to maps in scale 1:10 000 have been
standardized since 1958 - the process still continues
• Creation of the Geonames database started in 1997
• Since 2005 Geonames data have been available in
completeness
• Geonames database was restructured and joined Land
Survey Office‘s GIS called ZABAGED in 2009
