Reaction Paper: A Critique of “Ang Kwento Nating dalawa (The Story of Us that Never
Was)” 2015 movie – directed by Nestor Abrogena Jr.
“Love is love, no matter who the person is and how they are related to each
other. They are all prone to the ecstasy and the aches.”(Rappler.com, 2016). In 2015,
Nestor Abrogena Jr. directed a good movie titled “Ang Kwento Nating Dalawa (The
Story of Us that Never Was)”. It can be summarized in just few words a filmmaker and a
writer struggle to make something out of their relationship facing society’s expectation,
Isa having a boyfriend and Sam as Isa’s teacher. Tackling casual feelings of being
comfortable to someone after escaping their reality even they do not have that much
commitment to each other and holding oneself for a forbidden love existing in our
society, a teacher- student romantic relationship.
In the script, the first plot of the movie from Sam, a filmography teacher, waking
up late then riding a train until last minute showing how they feel hardness about the
conflict “forbidden love” that was only shown in the last scenes. Their plot timeline is
pretty new which the short events come at a one and a half hour makes bored. With that
sequence, problem introducing late that makes the viewer guess what’s the conflict?
Why characters can’t make it up? Plus, lines contains foul words makes some viewer
uncomfortable with the movie repeatedly uttering, “f**k you”.
In cinematography, the camera results looks blurred and lot of scenes was dark
noticeable inside the campus when Isa practicing her singing. Additionally, the sound
was very noisy especially the first part makes the words they conveyed can’t hear. They
do not use much soundtrack to take scenes more emotional to viewers. Many scenes in
projecting a visual of narrator, but scenes are experiencing the same in character,
walking in a stairs- camera comes in a bumpy shot and while they riding taxi.
I appreciate highly the message and the theme relay in this movie. The power of
love justifying how people will react in situation they are in. They portray it without that
intimacy a kissing scene, hot scene, or rising scene. Main characters are too exposed
even little details makes stand out without using in-script lines.
If I will rate the movie 1-10 I will give it 8, even its not that much good scene their
idea in directing a movie was appraisable.
