2. Representing Parents
S By not including Scarlett‟s parents in the film, even though they are a big
factor in her death, our intended representation is that they are people she
can just forget about when she gets to school. They‟re not that important
which is why they‟re not shown and the things they do is only inferred in
speech by Jeneva “Your parents don‟t even like you”, which also implies
they don‟t care how they treat Scarlett or who finds out about it. Their
relationship with Scarlett is also shown in the library scene, you can see
she has self harmed in an obvious place more than once, so this shows
they can‟t care that much and when Daniel says “I can see it in your eyes”
after you hear her parents shouting at her.
S Scarlett is emotionally isolated, much like the protagonist in the film Carrie
which is down to her parents abusing her, like the protagonist in our film.
S We intend to represent the bullies parents‟ as absent, much like in the film
the Edukators, where the main characters are lead astray due to no parents
telling them breaking into people‟s houses to „teach them a lesson‟ is
wrong.
3. Scarlett
S We use close ups so the audience can identify with Scarlett, as she‟s supposed to be the
character the audience sympathizes with because she‟s being bullied and has problems at
home.
S The majority of the time the camera angle is high, to show how most people look at her, like her
parents and the bullies who look down on her, this is also how she feels, like she is lower than
other people.
S Lighting is bright on her when she‟s with the bullies and Daniel as she tries to block out the bad
thoughts but as soon as her thoughts turn dark so does he shot (eye shot and pictures.)
S Sound for her is all about tone of voice when she talks o Daniel, she‟s trying to be independent
so is quite aggressive and defensive in her tone to represent that although she keeps herself to
herself and is a typical loner at school, she‟s quite a strong person, which breaks stereotypes
and the ideology of someone who is going to commit suicide.
S She wears proper school uniform as she‟s supposed to be a well behaved, quiet student who
keeps out of trouble. Her make up is dark to represent her thoughts and how she feels on the
inside, as this is one of the only ways she can display it.
S She also has more screen time as she is the protagonist and the reason the character Daniel
goes on his sadistic killing spree.
4. Daniel
S We intended to represent Daniel as intelligent, a bit of a „goody two shoes‟ and a loner, by
making his speech quite formal even though he‟s in an informal situation, making him dress in
uniform which is neat and having him say he‟s „in the library a lot‟, this is all stereotypical
iconography for that type of person.
S The camera is on a slightly low tilt to represent him as a nicer/better person, than the bullies.
S He doesn‟t have any dark lighting around him because we want to represent that at this point in
the film he‟s a good person who‟s purely trying to get Scarlett to stick up for herself.
S He has some close ups and gets more screen time as the scene goes on as we intend to show
that he‟s getting more involved in the situation and we want the audience to like him, also there‟s
nothing going on in the background when he‟s in a shot to represent his imporance.
S We use quite a few point of view shots between Daniel and Scarlett as we want to show the
consideration between them, (Daniel wants to protect Scarlett from the bullies and Scarlett
doesn‟t want Daniel to get dragged into her problems) and represent the strange connection
starting to form.
5. Bullies
S We‟ve portrayed them as typical bullies who go round in gangs and don‟t follow rules by getting them to
swear and were non-school uniform.
S We intend to represent them as „sheep‟ by getting them to conform with clothes in fashion and each others
behaviour.
S The lighting on them is light to represent they‟re point of view that they don‟t think what they‟re doing is that
bad unlike most bullies, also it makes it just look like an average day., which is typical for bullying
S The camera isn‟t tilted up or down as we intend to represent that nobody looks up or down on them, not
even Scarlett – so it‟s only their opinion that they‟re better than her. Also in the bullying scene Veronica is in
the middle, to represent that she is the „leader‟ of the gang.
S There is also a shot where the camera is between the bullies so the audience can see what the bullies are
doing to Scarlett from their point of view and we intend for his to show how cruel they are, huddling round
her and verbally abusing her.
S They don‟t have a lot of screen time and we‟ve done this to represent that that day it didn‟t take a lot to get
Scarlett to commit suicide which would insinuate the bullying must be quite severe and would probably have
been going on a while which makes the audience empathize with Scarlett more which is one of the main
points of our film.
6. Overall
S We‟ve followed some stereotypes so he audience gets an
accurate portrayal of what we intend each character to be
like.
S However we didn‟t want everything to be typical and
therefore possibly obvious so, as explained previously,
we go against some stereotypes just to make our film
more interesting.
