1. PAINTCHECK
PAINT THICKNESS
GAUGE
PaintCheck enables quick, non-destructive and
accurate paint thickness measurement on steel, iron,
aluminium and other non-ferrous metals
Area of application and use
PaintCheck does not only measure the paint thick-
ness, but also gives you valuable information about
the coating structure, e. g. top coatings or sub-fillings.
If the measured thickness exceeds that of a standard
paint coating then this would either indicate the
presence of filler material used for repair work or a
repainted area.
Measurement is made possible by using two field-
proven methods in coating thickness measurement:
the magnetic and the eddy current methods (DIN
EN 2178 and 2360). Both of these offer the highest
degree of precision even with the thinnest paint
coatings, on steel as well as on non-ferrous metals
such as aluminium. PaintCheck uses both methods
which are automatically selected by the gauge
when positioning the probe.
This gauge offers unbeatable quickness, simplicity
and versatility.
Advantages at a glance
+ Easy single key operation –
just switch on and measure
+ Quick and accurate measurements
+ Large measurement range up to 3000 µm
(PaintCheck plus) or 2000 µm (PaintCheck)
+ Measurements on level or slightly curved surfaces
+ No calibration necessary
+ Suitable for measurements on iron/steel and
non-ferrous metals (e. g. aluminium)
+ Automatic base material recognition
+ Integrated probe for measurement on smooth,
painted areas
+ Four digit alphanumeric readout
+ Large contact area for reliable positioning
+ Acoustic signal with measurement recording
+ Switchable: µm/mils
+ Automatic switch-off function

PaintCheck plus F: extended range, for measurements on steel and iron
PaintCheck FN: standard range, for measurements on steel, iron, aluminium etc.
All types enable easy, non-destructive measurement of paint coating thickness and offer high resolution with a high degree
of accuracy. Owing to these facts, the PaintCheck family is the ideal tool for car dealers, paint shops and assessors.

PROBE OVERVIEW
The various measurement tasks of our customers are
reflected in our comprehensive probe program.
Innovations and ongoing further developments pro-
vide optimal results with high accuracy for a wide
range of industrial applications.
To determine the optimal probe the following aspects
need to be considered:
+ Material combination of layer and base material
+ Thickness of the layer and of the base material
+ Dimensions of the measurement object
+ Surface texture of the object
Your application decides on the optimal
combination of probe and gauge.
+ F-type probes (ferromagnetic)
Magnetic-inductive method (according to DIN EN
ISO 2808/2178 and ASTM B499) on ferromagnetic
base materials, such as iron and steel.
+ N-type probes (non-ferromagnetic)
Eddy current method (according to DIN EN ISO
2808/2360 and ASTM D7091) on non-magnetic,
metal based materials, such as aluminium, zinc,
copper, etc.
+ FN-type probes (combination probes)
Suitable for magnetic and non-magnetic base
materials such as iron / steel and non-ferrous
metals. The appropriate measurement method
for each base material is automatically activated
and is indicated in the display.

CHARACTERISTICS
OF PHYNIX PROBES
+ Durability
PHYNIX probes are extremely robust and resistant
to wear and have a nearly unlimited lifespan.
+ Made in Germany
All probes are designed and manufactured in
our production site in Neuss under the highest
quality standards.
+ Curvature compensation
The different calibration methods allow
measurement on highly curved surfaces by
a simple calibration procedure.
+ Works calibration
Each probe passes through an individual, internal
calibration to ensure maximum accuracy.
+ Switch on and measure
In most cases, a measurement without
additional calibration is possible.
PHYNIX probes are manufactured under the
highest quality standards in Germany only.
Depending on the application, a probe must meet
very specific requirements in order to achieve an
optimal result with high accuracy.
That‘s why we offer probes for different base ma-
terials such as iron/steel and non-ferrous metals,
different layer thicknesses, different measurement
locations or measuring area sizes.
For each measurement application, the optimal
probe! Our engineers can also develop an optimal
probe for your specific needs – contact us!

Application area
The outstanding feature of this new PHYNIX gauge is
the brilliant color graphic display with improved text
presentation and allows a variety of different oper-
ating languages. The standard now includes English,
German, French, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, Czech and
Chinese (simple and traditional).
The internal memory was greatly enlarged compared
to the Surfix series and now allows the storage of up to
2,000 measured values. The connection to a computer
is simply via USB 2.0. Cable and data transfer program
PHYNIX.connect is part of the delivery. The latter allows
transfer of readings to all modern Windows systems
and export to Excel.
Two models are available: the Surfix®
SX can be con-
nected to all probes from the PHYNIX probe program.
This ensures the highest possible flexibility which ena-
bles the device to fulfill many different measurement
tasks.
The Surfix®
EX devices with the fixed standard probe
are suitable for applications where the measurement
tasks are clearly defined. It is easy to use and also
more cost efficient compared to the Surfix®
SX with the
high-quality plug-in connection.

Areas of operation and application:
The most striking feature of our top model Surfix®
Pro X
is the high resolution color graphic display. The high-
contrast and bright display allows a reliable reading
of measurements from a distance or in the dark. The
graphic display allows a quick on-site data analysis
directly after the measurement. The intuitive, multilin-
gual user interface prevents operating error without
any need to use the operating manual.
The project „Industry 4.0“ which demands improved
networking of measuring instruments and production
control is supported by the integration of two interfac-
es: Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 2.0. The standard interfaces
help to easily integrate the Surfix®
Pro X in a fully net-
worked production environment.
The gauge also has a very large data memory for
up to 100,000 readings, optional with date, time and
calibration. For easier handling, the readings can be
organized into files with arbitrary file names.
Together with our exchangeable probes the Surfix®
Pro X provides highest precision combined with ease
of use for almost all applications.
All our measurement probes are equipped with a
highly wear-free tip made of carbide metal thus
having an almost unlimited life span.
