Structure and Narrative - VEL
1. Structure and Narrative
A trailer will often be structured around the most appealing moments of the film,
disregarding the conventional narrative order. For example you may see a funny moment
taken from the end of a comedy at the beginning of the trailer or a selection of clips to
attract the widest possible audience, such as a romantic clip in the trailer for an action film.
Some trailers will aim to provide a basic narrative structure to guide us through the films
storyline.
Comedy trailers will often use a lot of close up shots to show the actors facial expressions
which is important in this genre. They do this so the audience feel more involved with the
characters. Editing within trailers will often show hints to the type of genre the film will be.
Mise en scene can be used in film trailers to show what period the film is set in and so the
audience get a clear indication of the film type.
Bride Wars
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Narrative: The beginning of the trailer starts off with the wedding planner introducing the
two main characters and the story behind the two characters but not giving too much away.
The trailer then starts by setting the scene over the city (bird’s eye view).
Intertitles are shown throughout the trailer describing the story and plot twist.
Shot types: Medium shot – showing narrator, Medium shot/split screen – showing the two
main characters, Long shot – setting the scene, Close up – dialogue, especially confrontation
Camera angles: Birds eye view – used at the beginning of the trailer to set the scene, High
angle – used when characters are mirroring each other, showing the first brides build up,
Low angle – sets the scene of rooms or inside locations, sets the scene of the main locations ,
Eye level – used throughout the trailer and film to show the main characters, clearly
showing both build ups for the main characters and the main plot twist.
METHODS: SECONDARY
TECHNIQUES: Internet research, looking at trailers on
IMDB to look at the structure of my chosen
genre.
ORGANISATION: UNIT 1 CRITERION 2&3
REVELANCE: This is important because I’m going to be
creating a trailer of my own and will need
to know the structure of trailer and how
the narratives set in trailers.
