EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN
THE CREATIVE MEDIA SECTOR
Adam Grundy
TYPES OF CONTRACT
Explain the following types of contracts, including advantages and
disadvantages
Full-time
A full time contract is is usually around 35-40 hours a week, full-time employees are the most likely to
develop companly loyalty, and to feel a sense of ownership in the business. This can result in a
committed, hardworking workforce, willing to go through any tough times the business may encounter, a
disadvantage would be that a full time empoyee would spend the majority of his hours at work and
depending on how many hours a week would depend on how often he’d see his family.
Part-time
Part-time work might be any number of hours a week like 10 or 25. You have exactly the same employment
rights if you are a part-time or full-time employee. Flexibility is the key advantage of part-time jobs.
Because they work less than a full-time day, they still have time to attend school, recover from an
illness, care for family members, volunteer at worthy causes or work at another job for extra income.
Those working less than half a day have the choice to work mornings, afternoons or evenings in
establishments with longer hours, Part-time employees often hold more than one job, meaning possible
competition for time and loyalty, in addition, such employees often leave if offered full-time employment
by one of their other part-time employers
Temporary
Temporary employment means hiring an employee for a contracted period. These contract or temp workers
fulfill all the functions of regular employees and can help during increases in demands, or when your full-
timers take vacations or go on maternity leave. In temporary work, you learn new skill For example, IT and
internet jobs have hundreds of different computer programmes to contend with, sales jobs utilise different
databases and even catering and hospitality jobs and retail, wholesale jobs have different ways of dealing
with customers. The Job will come to an end – and with that comes and end to income. If you are requiring
temporary work after your assignment is scheduled to end it is best to start looking about two weeks before it
Freelance
Freelancers may work part-time or full-time. Because they are not considered employers, freelancers are
allowed to work for other employers and are usually permitted to perform tasks in their own way, so long
as the work gets done to the client's specifications. You get to choose your own hours. If you want to
sleep in until noon, you can do that. If you want to take the weekend off so you can explore the city, by
all means, go for it. Unfortunately, being a freelancer means that your income and your workload are
unstable and inconsistent. For the most part, you won’t be able to depend on any regular project, client,
or profit, whereas you would know the exact pay you’ll receive at a traditional job.
shift work
Shift work is work that takes place on a schedule outside the traditional 9 am – 5 pm day. It can involve
evening or night shifts, early morning shifts, and rotating shifts. Many industries rely heavily on shift
work, and millions of people work in jobs that require shift schedules. Most rotational shifts are repetitive
and do not require special skills from shift to shift and hence they are interchangeable and since you
work shifts you would be able to be base your outside life around this without it being interrupted.
Sometimes, but not always, shifts are determined according to seniority ? the seniors being given the
best shift (usually the day shift), less seniors the evening and the juniors the night shifts.
Permanent
A place at which an employee works is a permanent workplace if he or she attends it regularly for the
performance of the duties of the employment. It is usually clear whether or not a place is an employee's
permanent workplace (and, therefore, whether a journey to that place is ordinary commuting). It is
possible for an employee to have more than one permanent workplace at the same time, One of the
most common advantages to permanent employment is company-paid or company-subsidized
insurance benefits. These often include insurance policies, such as health, life, dental, vision, disability
and accidental death. Working for a single employer as a permanent employee can limit your earning
potential, particularly if you reach the top of your pay scale
Voluntary
Volunteering is described as an unpaid activity where someone gives their time to help a not-for-profit
organisation or an individual who they are not related to.Volunteering is a great way to meet new
people, especially if you are new to an area, Depending on the type of work you're doing, volunteering
can be time-consuming. You may start off doing one task, but before you know it, you've agreed to take
on other activities all in the name of giving back.
Casual
Casual employment can be defined as where an employee is employed when and if needed, and where
there is no particular expectation of continuing employment. Whether you are trade qualified and have a
range of industry tickets or are starting from the ground up. There is a growing requirement for workers
of all skill types. Though a casual work would not have access to paid personal carer's leave (sick
leave), public holidays or annual leave
Hourly paid
An hourly employee is paid an hourly wage for each hour worked, while a salaried employee is paid a flat
salary regardless of how many hours worked during a workweekAn advantage is that you get paid for
exactly the amount of time that you worked. A disadvanted though, compared to someone with salary is
that, even when a person that gets paid salary doesn't work all the hours they are supposed to, they still
get paid the same. While someone who gets paid by the hour will only get paid for the hours that they
worked..
Piecework;
Workers paid per task they perform or piece of work they do (known as piece work) are classed as doing
‘output work’. They must be paid either at least the minimum wage for every hour worked or on the
basis of a ‘fair rate’ for each task or piece of work they do. The potentially high earnings attract efficient
workers whereas The guaranteed basic pay is usually lower than it would be under pure time rates.
RECRUITMENT WITHIN THE CREATIVE
MEDIA SECTOR (EXPLAIN WHAT IS PLUS
THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES)
Job centres & careers advice
Jobcentre Plus is a government-funded employment agency and social security office that can be found in
most cities, whose aim it is to help people of working age find employment in the UK. The advantage is
that it does not cost any money to advertise, and the staff at the jobcentre will do the initial vetting,
which would otherwise have to be done by the company. The disadvantage is that for the higher grade
jobs, a lot of potential applicants do not use the job centre.
Local & national press
Different newspapers advertise jobs on different days and for different types of work. For example the
Financial Times advertise many jobs in the financial sector, while the Times Educational Supplement
advertises jobs in education. Advertising agencies and departments also normally are fast-paced
atmospheres which, again, appeals to some people and can ruffle the feathers of others. One
disadvantage of advertising on the Internet is that your marketing materials are automatically available
for anyone in the world to copy, regardless of the legal ramifications.
personal contacts & word of mouth
Word-of-mouth advertising is important for every business, as each happy customer can steer dozens of new
ones your way. And it's one of the most credible forms of advertising because a person puts their
reputation on the line every time they make a recommendation and that person has nothing to gain but
the appreciation of those who are listening. Advertising via word of mouth gives you a understanding to
what they the person is like which will help during employment though with word of mouth advertising,
the advertisements can spread slowly or not reach anyone at all which is not what the business wants
Networking
Network employment recruitment is recruiting within the company, meaning only advertising jobs to the
people within the company can apply for the job. The advantage is that only people you are aiming it at
in the company can see it though the disadvantage is that you may not get as many applications you
would want.
Internet
Recruitment online is the easiest way to advertise a job to everyone and it costs the least to do, websites like
Monster and Direct.gov are the best ways to advertise jobs locally within the uk. A job vacancy can be
put on a job site in the morning, the first applications arrive by lunchtime, and a candidate interviewed
by the end of the day. While you may wonder how too many candidates applying for your job could ever
count as a disadvantage, it is a fact that dealing with inappropriate, irrelevant and bad candidates is the
bugbear of many a HR manager. Candidate spam can waste a lot of time
