Employment opportunities in the creative media sector
1.
2. TYPES OF CONTRACT
Explain the following types of contracts, including advantages and
disadvantages
Full-time: Full-time employment is employment in which a person works a minimum
number of hours defined as such by his/her employer. Full-time employment often
comes with benefits that are not typically offered to part-time, temporary, or flexible
workers, such as annual leave, sick leave, and health insurance. Full-time jobs are
often considered careers. They generally pay more than part-time jobs, and
usually carry more hours per week.
Part-time: A part-time job is a form of employment that carries fewer hours per week
than a full-time job. Workers are considered to be part-time if they commonly work
fewer than 30 or 35 hours per week.According to the International Labour
Organization, the number of part-time workers has increased from one-fourth to a
half in the past 20 years in most developed countries, excluding the United States.
There are many reasons for working part-time, including the desire to do so,
having one's hours cut back by an employer and being unable to find a full-time
job. The International Labour Organisation Convention 175 requires that part-time
workers be treated no less favourably than full-time workers
3. Freelance: A freelancer, freelance worker, or freelance is somebody who is self-
employed and is not committed to a particular employer long term. These workers
are sometimes represented by a company or an agency that resells their labour
and that of others to its clients with or without project management and labour
contributed by its regular employees.
shift work: Shift work is an employment practice designed to make use of, or provide
service across, all 24 hours of the clock each day of the week (abbreviated as
24/7). The practice typically sees the day divided into "shifts", set periods of time
during which different groups of workers take up their posts. The term "shift work"
includes both long-term night shifts and work schedules in which employees
change or rotate shifts.
Permanent: Permanent employees work for a single employer and are paid directly by
that employer. In addition to their wages, they often receive benefits like
subsidized health care, paid vacations, holidays, sick time, or contributions to a
retirement plan. Permanent employees are often eligible to switch job positions
within their companies.
Temporary: Temporary work or temporary employment refers to a situation where the
employee is expected to leave the employer within a certain period of time.
Temporary employees are sometimes called "contractual", "seasonal", "interim",
"casual staff", "freelance"; or the word may be shortened to "temps."
4. Voluntary: voluntary work is when you go and help someone out at there work
without getting paid. Many volunteers are specifically trained in the areas they
work, such as medicine, education, or emergency rescue. Others serve on an
as-needed basis, such as in response to a natural disaster.
Casual: Contingent work, also sometimes known as casual work, is a neologism
which describes a type of employment relationship between an employer and
employee. There is no universally agreed consensus on what type of working
arrangement constitutes contingent work, but it is generally considered to be
work with at least one of the following characteristics:
Hourly paid: An hourly worker or hourly employee is an employee paid an hourly
wage for their services, as opposed to a fixed salary. Hourly workers may
often be found in service and manufacturing occupations, but are common
across a variety of fields.
Piecework: Piece work is any type of employment in which a worker is paid a
fixed piece rate for each unit produced or action performed regardless of
time.
5. RECRUITMENT WITHIN THE CREATIVE MEDIA
SECTOR (EXPLAIN WHAT IS PLUS THE
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES)
Job centres & careers advice: job centres are where people go to find a job if
they are struggling to do it on there own, the advantage of this is that your
getting help and different areas of work become aware to you.
Local & national press: newspapers have there own section in which they
advertise jobs that are in your area. These can be found in local newspapers
and are always in travelling distance. An advantage of advertising jobs in a
newspaper is that it is cheap and easy to buy. However the disadvantage is
that more people read the news paper online.
6. personal contacts & word of mouth: sometimes its not what you know but its
who you know. If you know someone who works in a certain job then you can
have a good chance of getting a job there also. They can put a good word in
for you and you have a big advantage if they are the manager.
Networking: networking is when a group of people exchange professional details
about themselves to other people. For example you could pass out business
cards to other people and then they can see what that can do for you.
Internet: for a job in the media industry the internet is one of the best places to
look for one. There is so many ways to advertise online and so many
opportunities to access a job online thanks to all the online job applications.
