This painting depicts a samurai warrior from Japan. Gao Jianfu painted it after studying art in Japan from 1906 to 1908, where he observed the works of masters like Takeuchi Seiho and Yokoyama Taikan. He used fine, delicate brushstrokes and graceful coloring to depict the samurai's features, clothes, and accessories in proper proportion, with an upright head and lively eyes. This early portrait work of Gao's is considered rare for its near-completed quality.
