  2. 2. <ul><li>Problem </li></ul><ul><li>Cowpea is a major source of dietary protein in sub-Saharan Africa. </li></ul><ul><li>Micronutrients (Fe, Zn,) deficiencies prevalent among young children </li></ul><ul><li>Micronutrients contents in cowpea grains of improved and farmers’ varieties unknown </li></ul><ul><li>Breeding activities place no emphasis on increasing micronutrients contents in grains </li></ul>

Materials and methods <ul><li>About 1,200 germplasm lines selected and sown in the field in Ibadan </li></ul><ul><li>Pods were harvested at plant maturity and allowed to dry in the greenhouse </li></ul><ul><li>Pods were threshed and seeds collected and packaged </li></ul><ul><li>Seeds were analyzed for Fe, Zn, protein and carotene contents </li></ul>
