Writing Styles Of My Writing Style
Sometimes when I look at the writing styles of my peers, be it on social media, emails I can sense a distinction between the different writing styles
that are used. When I'm writing whether it be in an email, text or a lab report I try my best to write everything more formally and longhand, which a
lot of people tend to overlook in today's society.
The last thing I wrote was a letter that I had sent to my significant other through the mail. The nuances of writing seem to be disappearing from today's
society, the finer intricacies of the English language will be lost in a generation or two, and cursive language is no longer being taught in schools,
with all the abbreviations being used a lot of writing feels less personal and more mechanical.

Carl Sandburg had a very distinct writing style all his own, and spent his entire life developing the way he wrote. He continuously traveled throughout
his life, experiencing new things and people which shaped his view and therefore his writing style. Because of this change in writing style throughout
his life, he wrote in both the Modern and Contemporary American literary time periods. Sandburg had a fascination with language which could be
traced back to his time on the Illinois prairie, where metaphors and idioms were used in everyday conversation held poetry (Hacker). "He was the son
of two Swedish immigrants, August and Clara Sandburg. His mother greatly encouraged reading and schooling, while his father did not see any
reason for it". (Cannato) Sandburg dropped out of school while he was in eighth grade, and started to work odd jobs such as: learning the tinner's
business, washing bottles in a pop–botteling works, learning the potter's skill, working as a waterboy, renting boats and selling refreshments,
stacking ice for an ice company, and working at the Williams Race Track. He also spent time as a hobo traveling across America. While traveling
he collected folk songs and worked where he could. "His father got him a free pass to Chicago in 1896, his trip to the city inspired him and planted
the seed for his work in poetry". (Krull and Hewitt) When Sandburg returned home, he told his older sister that, "I'm going away. I'm going to be a
writer. And if I can't be a

Write An Essay About My Writing Style
When I'm starting to write, it seems there are always distractions, e.g. my Dad has the TV on loud, the dogs are barking, etc. It's difficult to focus,
and makes it next to impossible for me to concentrate on the task at hand and carry out what I have set out to do. So, the first thing I do is clear my
brain. Sometimes I will wear headphones and play some gentle new age music, quiet to the point where I almost don't hear it, to enter a state
allowing for clear thinking. Once I'm there, I mentally brainstorm possible topics, write down the ones I have the strongest concepts for, and then
narrow down the choices until I am left with the few speaking to me. The next step is to draft an outline for each, unless I have already chosen one
specific one, and figure out whether I have enough ideas on the topic(s) to compose a full–length written piece. It usually helps narrow the field down
to one, although there have been times I had to stop and decide if maybe there was better subject matter out there I hadn't considered yet. Once I have
chosen my topic and outline, work on the first draft begins. It is usually then...show more content...
From my perspective, there is no single way to do it. Outlines can take many forms, which I know only too well as I have already tried a few. Some
people gravitate to the Chapter and Sub–Chapter style, while others use bullet points they can adjust. The choices are many. I am doing a memoir
project, and have figured out I may actually join several different outline styles. After many outline attempts, what I call trial and error, I decided my
piece needed to start with something akin to a bang, something to draw the readers' attention so much they want to read further to find out what was
going on. It came from one chapter outline element I had put together, but seemed at first connected to a later story part, and then it became clear I
needed to progress forward with the story background putting things into

If you would have asked me what writing was before I started highschool, I would have said something like "writing is hard. Its hours of stress and
research on a very boring topic so you can get a good grade. I hate writing." If you ask me what writing is now that I've graduated from High school I
would say "writing is very hard. Writing is a beautiful way to express your thoughts and emotions. I love writing." What changed my mind in those 3
years? My creative writing class. In that class I was taught writing is not grammar. Writing is not punctuation, flow, or structure. Writing is thoughts put
together with grammar, punctuation, flow, and structure (Kyle Nelson). If writing is more than just the rules of english, what is good writing, how can
you be a good writer, and why should you write?

Writing is one of the most popular forms of communication these days. With social media and text messaging in our pockets, writing is more
convenient than face to face conversation. The problem with texting and social media posts is how hard it is to read emotion in the short
passages. In person it's easy to tell how someone is feeling by their tone of voice, facial expressions, body language etc. If you learn how to write
well you can better express what you're feeling even from miles away. Writing can also help you get a better job. I took a business class where we
learned how to write a good resume. We were taught that wording is the most important part. For example instead of saying I was a sandwhich
maker at Wendy's, I would say that I was a food preparation specialist at a national chain. See the difference? But you can write for more than just
"productive" reasons. You can write for fun! Write a poem for your mom for mother's day, write a short story, how you feel, what you did today, write
about that cute boy in your class. Just

Your Writing Style
How can one person know what good style is when writing a paper? Where is it written that we as students should have to follow specific guidelines
while writing? Anyone wanting to make their writing clear, precise, and simply correct will usually try following some type of guideline, or book in
order to perfect their own writing style. After reading both The Elements of Style by Strunk and White, and also Williams's Style toward Clarity and
Grace I can see why teachers discuss these books as tools for correcting and perfecting their students writing, and style. While at the same time
understand someone out of the classroom setting, brushes up on their skills in writing with these books before they...show more content...
Instead of calling these books rule books they should be called suggestive writing tip books. Whereas, before someone thought if they did not follow
the rule they were breaking it, now they can feel they are simply choosing to ignore some advice that may or may not have been helpful to them. This
helps them to understand that not every time they "break" a rule is wrong, sometimes choosing to ignore the advice can have positive effects on their
writing. Strunk and White, and Williams use very different approaches when addressing the issue of style.
Strunk and White, apply more of a straight forward approach strictly telling the reader to follow their rules word for word. Although, many students
and teachers believe it is a mystery why they choose the rules in style that they put into their book. Are these places where students have the most
trouble with their style, and diction? If not, then are they the pet peeves of an overtly critical no–nonsense teacher? It was my understanding that
overall the students should not question the advice being given them; they should simply follow the rules with no questions asked. After going
through the blogs I came across Paula Newsom's, she felt the same way I did about Strunk and White's method for addressing style in their book.
According to Paula's blog "any style book that makes a reader presume that its rules are engraved in stone suggests that there is only one

In this essay I will be going into detail about three different writing styles used in health and social care. I will also be comparing the writing styles
against each other.
Persuasive Writing – Persuasive writing is all about trying to get someone's attention on something. Persuasive writing use's specific features which
help the information used to become persuasive towards the audience. This could include using present tense, using emotive language, using
rhetorical questions, making opinions sound like facts, as well as using powerful verbs and adjectives etc. Persuasive writing can be linked and used
in many different ways. One of the ways would include health and social care. This could be linked by usage in...show more content...
The journalist also always puts out a headline that would immediately get the audiences attention. The headline is always the art of the journalist
work, as they see this as an opportunity to sell their story; headline could be short, snappy, and catchy. After the headline the journalist provides the
audience with a short paragraph which sums up the story, some see this as a short introduction. The journalist does this to gain the audience interest.
Most people know that a person's eyes are always sighted upon small amounts of writing and imagery. So the short paragraph would make the
audience show some interest towards the story. In health and social care journalistic writing is used a lot, whether this is about the stories about the
NHS being published. Or when major illnesses or problems are coming. An examp0le of this would be when we went through the period of swine
flue; wine flue was making its front page everywhere. This not only was a disaster but it was the journalists dream, as they new it was a hot topic to
write about as it would gain many peoples attention, this would also push the journalists ratings up.
All three writing styles are different from each other in variety of ways. We see as persuasive language as a main way to get the attention of someone,
where as reflective language is where you speak about what had happened through–out the day. However journalistic writing talks about

There are many writing styles that many people pick up as they go through there many years of schooling. Each person picks up the same type of

through many years of English classes I have acquired more and more skills and many more are sure to come as I continue my education. My writing
skills have only gotten better from the time of ninth grade English class until today. Since my days back in junior high school I was only taught the
basic skills to write papers and since then they have grown to make me a decent writer. I have many strengths and also...show more content...
Run–on sentences is also another one of my weaknesses as a writer which is not as big as a problem as my weakness of verb tense use. Another of
many disadvantages of a writer in my point of view is my able to organize my sentences so they run smoothly. I need to work a little bit more on my
internal organization of paragraphs. I don't exactly incorporate quotes so that my sentences run as smoothly as they can. All together I think these couple
of disadvantages of my writing is minimal and that I can work on these mistakes out if I would proof read my papers more in depth. If I can work out
my weaknesses from my writing I will have more advantages and also be considered a better writer.
Along with disadvantages of my writing also come the advantages which make me a half way decent writer in my perspective. In writing papers I
include many interesting facts about the topic that I am writing on. This skill of being able to research topics good is something that I think is one of
my major strengths because of the ability to take the time and patience to weed through tons of material. I am able to take this research that I find and
incorporate it into my papers in a fair enough manner that makes my papers have way decent. Another strength that I posses is my

Writing Styles: What Is My Writing Style?
This year we practiced a couple of writing styles, they include the ACE answer, letters, literary analysis, monologues, narratives, poems, and last

you want to end your ACE response. But if I had to pick a least favorite it would probably be narratives.because they are so much longer an require
more attention to detail when you are writing.

My Writing Style Analysis
During this semester in English 107, I have progressed more as a writer. Before I went to University of Arizona, my writing was rigid. I wrote
five–paragraph TOEFL style essay all the time in my high school life. After I attended in English 107, I was not confident about my writing skill.
Throughout these three projects we have done, I become more and more confident about my writing skill than before. The Student Learning
Outcomes also helped me to grow as a writer a lot. In these goals, I did well on several of them, but I still need to work on the other goals.
This success goal is about my narrative paper. It relates to goal 1b, which is analyzing the ways a text's purposes, audience, and contexts influence
rhetorical options. In this paper,...show more content...
But I was not good at analyze a genre. I didn't talk about the strategies that the BWM advertisement shows. I was more like to analyze a marketing
genre. That the things I need to improve, I miss the main point of this essay. Although Ms Ramirez told me several times that I need to find a specific
example, I still didn't do well. I always realized the better ways after I did something wrong. I will still work on this part and grow as a better writer.
Success Goal The second success goal is 2f, which is compose persuasive researched arguments for various audiences and purposes, and in
multiple modalities. In project two, I have to interview someone and introduce the community that he stays in. I introduced a famous university in
China. I collected so many information on its official website, but the only fault beside grammar errors was that I wrote a lot of different aspects
of campus life and lost the point that I want to provide. I have to admit that I rushed this paper in the midnight before the due date. It cause some
formats in profile essay are wrong. For example, I didn't use MLA format on the citation part. Even I forgot to put space between my sentences. If I do

Academic Writing Styles
Academic writing
Proper academic writing should demonstrate the students understanding of the subject at hand. (Elton, 2010) adds that because academic writing may
defer from discipline to discipline, instructors in schools have a duty to express their expectations of students' writing while students on the other hand
should act on it.
Academic writing is logical
The student's work needs to have a introduction, the body and the conclusion. The introduction gives a background to the topic and one could include
interesting facts and quotations. It is important to outline the main ideas that are in the body. The student then discusses the main points in the body.
This is done in paragraphs which should be well structured to give a coherent argument. The conclusion is the final paragraph and must briefly
summarise every idea discussed in the body.
Other's works
Academic writing builds on what others have done on the same subject. A student therefore needs to base his work on his own ideas as well as what
others have done and thought about, however, students should take care not to get lost in another scholar's voice but should instead incorporate the
information so as to maintain the novelty of his argument. (Hampton, 2014) states that another scholar's work should be fully acknowledged by
accurate citation.
Academic writing is objective
Academic writing is objective (A. De Montfort University Website, 2014) states that one needs to write in the third person and avoid

Writing Style
What is writing style? I started out thinking that writing style is a personal thing and that all writers have their own style. But, this way of thinking is
really just a simple way to answer the question. After more careful thought, I realized that style is actually quite the opposite of personal and original.
Style is a form of standardization. As writers, we all follow certain rules and guidelines to make our point. Style is these rules and guidelines.
For a writer to better understand style, multitudes of books and helpful guides have been published. Many are written as lists of rules about word choice,
constructions to avoid, common stylistic traps, and other such things. One of these is The Elements of Style by...show more content...
I believe this to be a common mistake. Strunk and White refer to this usage as the "serial" comma. The only time they believe it is acceptable to not
follow this rule is in the case of a business or a firm containing three or more names. Often the second comma will be omitted.
Another very important rule dealing with commas is rule number 4, "place a comma before a conjunction introducing an independent clause" (Strunk
and White, 5). This rule not only points out the proper place to put a comma, but also the fact that there are two part sentences. Some writers tend to
put a period where a comma should be placed, maybe because they are uncomfortable with where to put the comma. An example of proper comma
usage in this case would be
"The early records of the city have disappeared, and the story of its first years can no longer be reconstructed" (Strunk and White, 5).
Relatinging back to breaking a two–part sentence into two sentences is rule number six. One should be careful to not place a period where a comma
should be.
"I met them on a Cunard Liner many years ago. Coming home from Liverpool to New York" (Strunk and White, 7).
In this example, the first period should really be a comma.
An additional and significant rule to writing is the usage of the "he/she" pronoun. This is mentioned in both books, yet the proper usages described
differ from one another. In the original copy by Strunk he feels that "he" is the only correct pronoun.

I hear inner Strunk and White voices of "don't overwrite", "write in a way that comes naturally," and so forth, going through my head. I have visions
of endless Williams examples and illustrations on clarity. I see weeks of blog writings flashing through my memory. From all of this, I now own and
believe in a firm and personal definition of what style is and what good writing entails. William Strunk and E.B. White's book TheElements of Style,
along with Joseph M. Williams's book Style TowardClarity and Grace helped lead me to this point, which is: what is the point?
What really matters when we consider the style of writing? What makes good writing good? Every writer could...show more content...
There must be guidelines. Strunk and White and Williams share those thoughts with their readers, and while I do not agree with all of their rules, as
a writer, I believe within these style books I have found guidelines in which writers can fulfill their purpose. As a reader, I feel that if writers follow
some of the guidelines Strunk and White and Williams have to offer to the world, I can come away from a piece of writing affected.
The next question would be: how is a reader affected? Well, a reader cannot be affected unless a piece of writing is presented clearly. A piece of
writing must be written in a way that any person can pick it up, read it, and not only understand the point the author is trying to convey through her
/his writing, but be able to follow the flow of information. For that to take place, the information must be presented in a clear manner. I believe this to
be an important part of style; without it the style of a piece of writing can be lost.
One of Strunk and White's principles of composition suggests that writers "express coordinate ideas in similar form." It goes on to explain that,
"...expressions similar in content and function be outwardly similar. "The likeness of form enables the reader to recognize more readily the likeness
of content and function" (26). By expressing similar ideas in the same or similar form, readers are able to better understand how the ideas relate to

Writing Styles of Sylvia Plath Essay
The Life and Writings of Sylvia Plath After reading and discussing many poets and their written work, I have realized that not only pain, but any
emotion that the poet is feeling, plays a large part in how the poems express themselves through their writing. I have chosen to explore Sylvia Plath and
the poems she has written and how her pain and personal experiences have influenced her poetry. Similar to many other authors of the twentieth
century, Sylvia Plath's writing was influenced largely by her depression and mental illness. I found it rather interesting that her life began during The
Great Depression and that from a young girl at the age of eight she was suffering and battling her own personal depression. It's almost as...show more

The year they divorced, Plath wrote the poem "Tulips". Some say that this poem was written to help her cope with her post–partum depression. One
example of this would be that she gave the tulips life–like characteristics. In lines thirty–seven and thirty–eight Plath personifies the tulips by saying
she can "hear them breath/lightly through their swaddlings like an awful baby". This is a great example of how one might assume Plath was trying to
get her fears of being a mother out. Although, she loved her children, she still somewhat pictured a baby as awful. Already suffering from depression
probably intensified her post–partum depression much more than a "normal" woman might experience it. Sylvia started her writing shortly after her
father's passing and increased in emotional force as she got older and matured. The more pain she felt and the more she suffered, the more intense
her literary work became. Her life was obviously filled with pain and agony. It's quite clear that her writings were influenced by all of the happenings
in her life and not only her father's death. It's most probable that Plath's depression caused chaos in her marriage and home life, well–being, and
eventually led her to take her own life by inhaling fumes from a gas oven that she had turned on in February of 1963.
I attached this poem to my review because we didn't review it in class and wanted to ensure you had a copy to

The Five Paragraph Essay and My Own Writing Style
The five paragraph essay is tremendously valuable to me as a student. I have realized throughout my research that this format is seldom used by
professionals; it is mostly used by students like me. I believe I now understand why that is; it seems to be a very clear way of composing a paper. It
has a great deal of structure to it, and allows for more consistency and a better flow. Without having such structure, it is easy to go off on tangents, and
at the same time, confuse the reader. The five–paragraph essay is essentially a sealant. Just like sealant fastens things together and helps ensure that
things are in order, well–fitted, and secure. So too, the five paragraph essay makes sure that all of the various writing components fit...show more

Once I have identified my main themes, I start to freewrite by linking them all together. My process of freewriting is similar to the process suggested
in the lecture. The concepts in the lecture included the five–paragraph essay, as well as its inner–component: prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing.
Prewrtitng is basically all of the actions that are taken during the drafting process. This often involves brainstorming and the collecting of relevant
data. It is the first step that was mentioned and is considered to be a gathering process. My freewriting process primarily consists of prewriting,
although I mostly rely on my own thought process versus using alternative sources. We learned that drafting is when a person's ideas start forming
actual sentences. It is the process of connecting ideas. This is precisely what I do when I freewrite, but prewriting involves more supporting of ideas.
Although revision was mentioned in the lecture, I tend to incorporate it into my freewriting without it being a separate process. Revision is basically
making the sentences and the structure more succinct. It involves making the writing as clear as possible for the reader. Editing was also covered in
the lecture. It involves making sure the correct grammar is being used and that the spelling is correct. I also use this process in freewriting, although
much of it comes automatically as I start typing. As a result of completing this analysis, I realize

We all have a style, and it would seem that I wouldn't know another style, better than I know my own. However, I really wasn't aware that every
circumstance causes me to change my 'style' accordingly. It seems that we are all just actors and actresses, playing various social roles, and yet we
think we are being our 'self'. There were times when I was really nervous, perhaps before a job interview or meeting new people, and my mom would
say , " don't be nervous, just go and be your self." The 'self' is an integration of the social roles we play and it is complex because we change our

but I will let you be the judge after we explore further the other diverse style roles I take on, in my life.
My insincerity isn't found in what I say to customers, rather it's the way in which I say things, however, I definitely have a work "lingo." This
communication style certainly isn't one I use with friends. I don't ask how their doing and send them on their way. This is an example of two
different situations when one style isn't always the appropriate one, and my interaction between my two families reveals even more about my
communication styles. My parents and I converse about who will do the dishes and other essential household business. There is no unnecessary
talking or formality used in our communication style. For example, when I'm at my fiance's house, I am as polite as I possibly can be. I always have
wonderful conversations with them, but once again this communication style reflects the ways we interact with each other. At home, if there is a phone
call for my mother, I wouldn't hesitate to yell at the top of my lungs from down in my room, "Ma!.......C'mere and get the phone, it's for you!" I am
much more comfortable, relaxed, and basically less polite in my own home and my communication style definitely reflects this. I

Whenever I get a writing assignment for class, it seems like a chore. I don't have a problem with writing, but papers always seem to take more time
than they should. Maybe this is due to poor planning on my part, but essays are usually an ordeal, and I dread actually doing the work to finish one.
The task is simple enough, but putting it off always seems like a better alternative to writing. I do think about the paper that I have to write, but I do not
put thoughts and ideas into a paper or outline until I absolutely need to do so. From the moment I am given an assignment sheet, I begin brainstorming
about the paper. I may not use any of these ideas, but I think of them. I also have a tendency to forget good ideas, which leads me to think...show more

Because of this, it makes sense to clear my head rather than struggle with the paper. What I actually do to clear my head varies from listening to
music, talking to friends, watching TV, or playing games, yet each activity allows me to get my mind off finishing an essay. For a little while, I'm able
to go back to brainstorming while I have a little fun, and this makes the already–easy body paragraphs even easier. I make an effort not to forget about
my papers, though, because procrastinating just leads to an unfun few hours before a deadline. The writing process changes in the sense that I have a
very limited amount of time to finish working, and it causes unnecessary stress trying to complete a strong paper without being able to take a little
break. While I feel my work doesn't suffer from having to meet a fast–approaching deadline, I'd just rather not have to write a paper in an hour, or two
if I'm lucky. While I don't want to write a paper in one hour, I'll usually try to complete it in one day. I feel that if I leave too much time between
working on it, I'll lose the mindset for writing and slow down the process. If this happens, I have to spend time getting mentally ready to write, and
if I wait a long time between writing sessions, I'm liable to forget good ideas I may have had. Because of this, I make sure to get back to work and
allow the words to flow once again. Depending on the topic and the class, I may have to write an additional three or

Reflective Essay On My Writing Style
My process of writing this piece was unique in that I really had to write a piece that was more thoughtful and intimate than most assignments. My
method involved writing everything at once, tweaking words, exploring different approaches or ideas, and improving weak parts. It was immensely
consuming and took hours of carefully reading and adjusting. The struggles I faced were finding a topic about which I was passionate, and
synthesizing everything in the final paragraph. The discussions we had in class altered my understanding of personal essays, elevating it from simply
another writing style to an art form. I was particularly influenced by the style of Didion's In Bed. The entire piece sounded informal yet refined, as if
she were speaking to a friend. Conferencing was useful for feedback about my writing style and suggestions for a title, which ultimately helped me
write the final paragraph. I believe all of these insights helped me to craft a beautiful essay of which I am really proud. As an LA learner, I have

years I have listened surreptitiously to their comments, yet I have gradually learned to no longer pay any attention to them. What offended at first has

My Writing Style Essay

  • 1. Writing Styles Of My Writing Style Sometimes when I look at the writing styles of my peers, be it on social media, emails I can sense a distinction between the different writing styles that are used. When I'm writing whether it be in an email, text or a lab report I try my best to write everything more formally and longhand, which a lot of people tend to overlook in today's society. The last thing I wrote was a letter that I had sent to my significant other through the mail. The nuances of writing seem to be disappearing from today's society, the finer intricacies of the English language will be lost in a generation or two, and cursive language is no longer being taught in schools, with all the abbreviations being used a lot of writing feels less personal and more mechanical. • 2. Carl Sandburg had a very distinct writing style all his own, and spent his entire life developing the way he wrote. He continuously traveled throughout his life, experiencing new things and people which shaped his view and therefore his writing style. Because of this change in writing style throughout his life, he wrote in both the Modern and Contemporary American literary time periods. Sandburg had a fascination with language which could be traced back to his time on the Illinois prairie, where metaphors and idioms were used in everyday conversation held poetry (Hacker). "He was the son of two Swedish immigrants, August and Clara Sandburg. His mother greatly encouraged reading and schooling, while his father did not see any reason for it". (Cannato) Sandburg dropped out of school while he was in eighth grade, and started to work odd jobs such as: learning the tinner's business, washing bottles in a pop–botteling works, learning the potter's skill, working as a waterboy, renting boats and selling refreshments, stacking ice for an ice company, and working at the Williams Race Track. He also spent time as a hobo traveling across America. While traveling he collected folk songs and worked where he could. "His father got him a free pass to Chicago in 1896, his trip to the city inspired him and planted the seed for his work in poetry". (Krull and Hewitt) When Sandburg returned home, he told his older sister that, "I'm going away. I'm going to be a writer. And if I can't be a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Write An Essay About My Writing Style When I'm starting to write, it seems there are always distractions, e.g. my Dad has the TV on loud, the dogs are barking, etc. It's difficult to focus, and makes it next to impossible for me to concentrate on the task at hand and carry out what I have set out to do. So, the first thing I do is clear my brain. Sometimes I will wear headphones and play some gentle new age music, quiet to the point where I almost don't hear it, to enter a state allowing for clear thinking. Once I'm there, I mentally brainstorm possible topics, write down the ones I have the strongest concepts for, and then narrow down the choices until I am left with the few speaking to me. The next step is to draft an outline for each, unless I have already chosen one specific one, and figure out whether I have enough ideas on the topic(s) to compose a full–length written piece. It usually helps narrow the field down to one, although there have been times I had to stop and decide if maybe there was better subject matter out there I hadn't considered yet. Once I have chosen my topic and outline, work on the first draft begins. It is usually then...show more content... From my perspective, there is no single way to do it. Outlines can take many forms, which I know only too well as I have already tried a few. Some people gravitate to the Chapter and Sub–Chapter style, while others use bullet points they can adjust. The choices are many. I am doing a memoir project, and have figured out I may actually join several different outline styles. After many outline attempts, what I call trial and error, I decided my piece needed to start with something akin to a bang, something to draw the readers' attention so much they want to read further to find out what was going on. It came from one chapter outline element I had put together, but seemed at first connected to a later story part, and then it became clear I needed to progress forward with the story background putting things into Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Essay About My Writing Style If you would have asked me what writing was before I started highschool, I would have said something like "writing is hard. Its hours of stress and research on a very boring topic so you can get a good grade. I hate writing." If you ask me what writing is now that I've graduated from High school I would say "writing is very hard. Writing is a beautiful way to express your thoughts and emotions. I love writing." What changed my mind in those 3 years? My creative writing class. In that class I was taught writing is not grammar. Writing is not punctuation, flow, or structure. Writing is thoughts put together with grammar, punctuation, flow, and structure (Kyle Nelson). If writing is more than just the rules of english, what is good writing, how can you be a good writer, and why should you write? What is good writing? The best writing I have read...show more content... Writing is one of the most popular forms of communication these days. With social media and text messaging in our pockets, writing is more convenient than face to face conversation. The problem with texting and social media posts is how hard it is to read emotion in the short passages. In person it's easy to tell how someone is feeling by their tone of voice, facial expressions, body language etc. If you learn how to write well you can better express what you're feeling even from miles away. Writing can also help you get a better job. I took a business class where we learned how to write a good resume. We were taught that wording is the most important part. For example instead of saying I was a sandwhich maker at Wendy's, I would say that I was a food preparation specialist at a national chain. See the difference? But you can write for more than just "productive" reasons. You can write for fun! Write a poem for your mom for mother's day, write a short story, how you feel, what you did today, write about that cute boy in your class. Just Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 6. Your Writing Style Essay Your Writing Style How can one person know what good style is when writing a paper? Where is it written that we as students should have to follow specific guidelines while writing? Anyone wanting to make their writing clear, precise, and simply correct will usually try following some type of guideline, or book in order to perfect their own writing style. After reading both The Elements of Style by Strunk and White, and also Williams's Style toward Clarity and Grace I can see why teachers discuss these books as tools for correcting and perfecting their students writing, and style. While at the same time understand someone out of the classroom setting, brushes up on their skills in writing with these books before they...show more content... Instead of calling these books rule books they should be called suggestive writing tip books. Whereas, before someone thought if they did not follow the rule they were breaking it, now they can feel they are simply choosing to ignore some advice that may or may not have been helpful to them. This helps them to understand that not every time they "break" a rule is wrong, sometimes choosing to ignore the advice can have positive effects on their writing. Strunk and White, and Williams use very different approaches when addressing the issue of style. Strunk and White, apply more of a straight forward approach strictly telling the reader to follow their rules word for word. Although, many students and teachers believe it is a mystery why they choose the rules in style that they put into their book. Are these places where students have the most trouble with their style, and diction? If not, then are they the pet peeves of an overtly critical no–nonsense teacher? It was my understanding that overall the students should not question the advice being given them; they should simply follow the rules with no questions asked. After going through the blogs I came across Paula Newsom's, she felt the same way I did about Strunk and White's method for addressing style in their book. According to Paula's blog "any style book that makes a reader presume that its rules are engraved in stone suggests that there is only one Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Writing Styles Essay example Writing Styles In this essay I will be going into detail about three different writing styles used in health and social care. I will also be comparing the writing styles against each other. Persuasive Writing – Persuasive writing is all about trying to get someone's attention on something. Persuasive writing use's specific features which help the information used to become persuasive towards the audience. This could include using present tense, using emotive language, using rhetorical questions, making opinions sound like facts, as well as using powerful verbs and adjectives etc. Persuasive writing can be linked and used in many different ways. One of the ways would include health and social care. This could be linked by usage in...show more content... The journalist also always puts out a headline that would immediately get the audiences attention. The headline is always the art of the journalist work, as they see this as an opportunity to sell their story; headline could be short, snappy, and catchy. After the headline the journalist provides the audience with a short paragraph which sums up the story, some see this as a short introduction. The journalist does this to gain the audience interest. Most people know that a person's eyes are always sighted upon small amounts of writing and imagery. So the short paragraph would make the audience show some interest towards the story. In health and social care journalistic writing is used a lot, whether this is about the stories about the NHS being published. Or when major illnesses or problems are coming. An examp0le of this would be when we went through the period of swine flue; wine flue was making its front page everywhere. This not only was a disaster but it was the journalists dream, as they new it was a hot topic to write about as it would gain many peoples attention, this would also push the journalists ratings up. All three writing styles are different from each other in variety of ways. We see as persuasive language as a main way to get the attention of someone, where as reflective language is where you speak about what had happened through–out the day. • 8. My writing styles Essay My writing styles There are many writing styles that many people pick up as they go through there many years of schooling. Each person picks up the same type of writing styles but as years go by people seem to pick up there own little types of writing style that separates them from everyone else. As I have gone through many years of English classes I have acquired more and more skills and many more are sure to come as I continue my education. My writing skills have only gotten better from the time of ninth grade English class until today. Since my days back in junior high school I was only taught the basic skills to write papers and since then they have grown to make me a decent writer. I have many strengths and also...show more content... Run–on sentences is also another one of my weaknesses as a writer which is not as big as a problem as my weakness of verb tense use. Another of many disadvantages of a writer in my point of view is my able to organize my sentences so they run smoothly. I need to work a little bit more on my internal organization of paragraphs. I don't exactly incorporate quotes so that my sentences run as smoothly as they can. All together I think these couple of disadvantages of my writing is minimal and that I can work on these mistakes out if I would proof read my papers more in depth. If I can work out my weaknesses from my writing I will have more advantages and also be considered a better writer. Along with disadvantages of my writing also come the advantages which make me a half way decent writer in my perspective. In writing papers I include many interesting facts about the topic that I am writing on. This skill of being able to research topics good is something that I think is one of my major strengths because of the ability to take the time and patience to weed through tons of material. I am able to take this research that I find and incorporate it into my papers in a fair enough manner that makes my papers have way decent. • 9. Writing Styles: What Is My Writing Style? This year we practiced a couple of writing styles, they include the ACE answer, letters, literary analysis, monologues, narratives, poems, and last but not least essays. But my favorite type of writing out of all those is the ACE response. I like the ACE response because it is short and sweet and get right to the point but it does it in an organized fashion so is not just all over the place. Witched helps keep you on track and on topic with how you want to end your ACE response. But if I had to pick a least favorite it would probably be narratives.because they are so much longer an require more attention to detail when you are writing. Even though I like to write ACE responses out of all of the responses. Actually, do have some bad tendency Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. My Writing Style Analysis During this semester in English 107, I have progressed more as a writer. Before I went to University of Arizona, my writing was rigid. I wrote five–paragraph TOEFL style essay all the time in my high school life. After I attended in English 107, I was not confident about my writing skill. Throughout these three projects we have done, I become more and more confident about my writing skill than before. The Student Learning Outcomes also helped me to grow as a writer a lot. In these goals, I did well on several of them, but I still need to work on the other goals. This success goal is about my narrative paper. It relates to goal 1b, which is analyzing the ways a text's purposes, audience, and contexts influence rhetorical options. In this paper,...show more content... But I was not good at analyze a genre. I didn't talk about the strategies that the BWM advertisement shows. I was more like to analyze a marketing genre. That the things I need to improve, I miss the main point of this essay. Although Ms Ramirez told me several times that I need to find a specific example, I still didn't do well. I always realized the better ways after I did something wrong. I will still work on this part and grow as a better writer. Success Goal The second success goal is 2f, which is compose persuasive researched arguments for various audiences and purposes, and in multiple modalities. In project two, I have to interview someone and introduce the community that he stays in. I introduced a famous university in China. I collected so many information on its official website, but the only fault beside grammar errors was that I wrote a lot of different aspects of campus life and lost the point that I want to provide. I have to admit that I rushed this paper in the midnight before the due date. It cause some formats in profile essay are wrong. For example, I didn't use MLA format on the citation part. Even I forgot to put space between my sentences. If I do my work early, I will have enough time to double check my work. I believe that I will get a better grade, if I work on my essay early. • 11. Academic Writing Styles Academic writing Proper academic writing should demonstrate the students understanding of the subject at hand. (Elton, 2010) adds that because academic writing may defer from discipline to discipline, instructors in schools have a duty to express their expectations of students' writing while students on the other hand should act on it. Academic writing is logical The student's work needs to have a introduction, the body and the conclusion. The introduction gives a background to the topic and one could include interesting facts and quotations. It is important to outline the main ideas that are in the body. The student then discusses the main points in the body. This is done in paragraphs which should be well structured to give a coherent argument. The conclusion is the final paragraph and must briefly summarise every idea discussed in the body. Other's works Academic writing builds on what others have done on the same subject. A student therefore needs to base his work on his own ideas as well as what others have done and thought about, however, students should take care not to get lost in another scholar's voice but should instead incorporate the information so as to maintain the novelty of his argument. (Hampton, 2014) states that another scholar's work should be fully acknowledged by accurate citation. Academic writing is objective Academic writing is objective (A. • 12. Writing Style Essays Writing Style What is writing style? I started out thinking that writing style is a personal thing and that all writers have their own style. But, this way of thinking is really just a simple way to answer the question. After more careful thought, I realized that style is actually quite the opposite of personal and original. Style is a form of standardization. As writers, we all follow certain rules and guidelines to make our point. Style is these rules and guidelines. For a writer to better understand style, multitudes of books and helpful guides have been published. Many are written as lists of rules about word choice, constructions to avoid, common stylistic traps, and other such things. One of these is The Elements of Style by...show more content... I believe this to be a common mistake. Strunk and White refer to this usage as the "serial" comma. The only time they believe it is acceptable to not follow this rule is in the case of a business or a firm containing three or more names. Often the second comma will be omitted. Another very important rule dealing with commas is rule number 4, "place a comma before a conjunction introducing an independent clause" (Strunk and White, 5). This rule not only points out the proper place to put a comma, but also the fact that there are two part sentences. Some writers tend to put a period where a comma should be placed, maybe because they are uncomfortable with where to put the comma. An example of proper comma usage in this case would be "The early records of the city have disappeared, and the story of its first years can no longer be reconstructed" (Strunk and White, 5). Relatinging back to breaking a two–part sentence into two sentences is rule number six. One should be careful to not place a period where a comma should be.

  • 14. Writing Style Essay Writing Style I hear inner Strunk and White voices of "don't overwrite", "write in a way that comes naturally," and so forth, going through my head. I have visions of endless Williams examples and illustrations on clarity. I see weeks of blog writings flashing through my memory. From all of this, I now own and believe in a firm and personal definition of what style is and what good writing entails. William Strunk and E.B. White's book TheElements of Style, along with Joseph M. Williams's book Style TowardClarity and Grace helped lead me to this point, which is: what is the point? What really matters when we consider the style of writing? What makes good writing good? Every writer could...show more content... There must be guidelines. Strunk and White and Williams share those thoughts with their readers, and while I do not agree with all of their rules, as a writer, I believe within these style books I have found guidelines in which writers can fulfill their purpose. As a reader, I feel that if writers follow some of the guidelines Strunk and White and Williams have to offer to the world, I can come away from a piece of writing affected. The next question would be: how is a reader affected? Well, a reader cannot be affected unless a piece of writing is presented clearly. A piece of writing must be written in a way that any person can pick it up, read it, and not only understand the point the author is trying to convey through her /his writing, but be able to follow the flow of information. For that to take place, the information must be presented in a clear manner. I believe this to be an important part of style; without it the style of a piece of writing can be lost. One of Strunk and White's principles of composition suggests that writers "express coordinate ideas in similar form." It goes on to explain that, "...expressions similar in content and function be outwardly similar. "The likeness of form enables the reader to recognize more readily the likeness of content and function" (26). By expressing similar ideas in the same or similar form, readers are able to better understand how the ideas relate to each other Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Writing Styles of Sylvia Plath Essay The Life and Writings of Sylvia Plath After reading and discussing many poets and their written work, I have realized that not only pain, but any emotion that the poet is feeling, plays a large part in how the poems express themselves through their writing. I have chosen to explore Sylvia Plath and the poems she has written and how her pain and personal experiences have influenced her poetry. Similar to many other authors of the twentieth century, Sylvia Plath's writing was influenced largely by her depression and mental illness. I found it rather interesting that her life began during The Great Depression and that from a young girl at the age of eight she was suffering and battling her own personal depression. It's almost as...show more content... The year they divorced, Plath wrote the poem "Tulips". Some say that this poem was written to help her cope with her post–partum depression. One example of this would be that she gave the tulips life–like characteristics. In lines thirty–seven and thirty–eight Plath personifies the tulips by saying she can "hear them breath/lightly through their swaddlings like an awful baby". This is a great example of how one might assume Plath was trying to get her fears of being a mother out. Although, she loved her children, she still somewhat pictured a baby as awful. Already suffering from depression probably intensified her post–partum depression much more than a "normal" woman might experience it. Sylvia started her writing shortly after her father's passing and increased in emotional force as she got older and matured. The more pain she felt and the more she suffered, the more intense her literary work became. Her life was obviously filled with pain and agony. It's quite clear that her writings were influenced by all of the happenings in her life and not only her father's death. It's most probable that Plath's depression caused chaos in her marriage and home life, well–being, and eventually led her to take her own life by inhaling fumes from a gas oven that she had turned on in February of 1963. I attached this poem to my review because we didn't review it in class and wanted to ensure you had a copy to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. The Five Paragraph Essay and My Own Writing Style The five paragraph essay is tremendously valuable to me as a student. I have realized throughout my research that this format is seldom used by professionals; it is mostly used by students like me. I believe I now understand why that is; it seems to be a very clear way of composing a paper. It has a great deal of structure to it, and allows for more consistency and a better flow. Without having such structure, it is easy to go off on tangents, and at the same time, confuse the reader. The five–paragraph essay is essentially a sealant. Just like sealant fastens things together and helps ensure that things are in order, well–fitted, and secure. So too, the five paragraph essay makes sure that all of the various writing components fit...show more content... Once I have identified my main themes, I start to freewrite by linking them all together. My process of freewriting is similar to the process suggested in the lecture. The concepts in the lecture included the five–paragraph essay, as well as its inner–component: prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. Prewrtitng is basically all of the actions that are taken during the drafting process. This often involves brainstorming and the collecting of relevant data. It is the first step that was mentioned and is considered to be a gathering process. My freewriting process primarily consists of prewriting, although I mostly rely on my own thought process versus using alternative sources. We learned that drafting is when a person's ideas start forming actual sentences. It is the process of connecting ideas. This is precisely what I do when I freewrite, but prewriting involves more supporting of ideas. Although revision was mentioned in the lecture, I tend to incorporate it into my freewriting without it being a separate process. Revision is basically making the sentences and the structure more succinct. It involves making the writing as clear as possible for the reader. Editing was also covered in the lecture. It involves making sure the correct grammar is being used and that the spelling is correct. I also use this process in freewriting, although much of it comes automatically as I start typing. As a result of completing this analysis, I realize Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Comparing My Writing Style Feedback: Writing style: it is excellent because this is essay style, I like it because I also prefer this type of style in essay, the writer who chosen times new roman and the number of lines is twelve, and also there is a double space between each newline and that is be required during writing essay. Organization: I believe the organization is perfect and good system because it has introduction, body and a conclusion. Also, this essay has title in the beginning and each paragraph has space in the first sentence, and the writer who also used the honor code. People can read each paragraph easily because there is space between each sentence and paragraph. The introduction is obvious and has general sentences in the beginning. • 18. My Writing Style Essay My Writing Style We all have a style, and it would seem that I wouldn't know another style, better than I know my own. However, I really wasn't aware that every circumstance causes me to change my 'style' accordingly. It seems that we are all just actors and actresses, playing various social roles, and yet we think we are being our 'self'. There were times when I was really nervous, perhaps before a job interview or meeting new people, and my mom would say , " don't be nervous, just go and be your self." The 'self' is an integration of the social roles we play and it is complex because we change our behaviors and our perceptions as situations dictate. The line you just read, illustrated an official writing 'self' that I slip into...show more content... Contrary to what my attitude portrayed at work, I don't consider myself a mean and inconsiderate person. I think I have a rather pleasant disposition, but I will let you be the judge after we explore further the other diverse style roles I take on, in my life. My insincerity isn't found in what I say to customers, rather it's the way in which I say things, however, I definitely have a work "lingo." This communication style certainly isn't one I use with friends. I don't ask how their doing and send them on their way. This is an example of two different situations when one style isn't always the appropriate one, and my interaction between my two families reveals even more about my communication styles. My parents and I converse about who will do the dishes and other essential household business. There is no unnecessary talking or formality used in our communication style. For example, when I'm at my fiance's house, I am as polite as I possibly can be. I always have wonderful conversations with them, but once again this communication style reflects the ways we interact with each other. At home, if there is a phone call for my mother, I wouldn't hesitate to yell at the top of my lungs from down in my room, "Ma!.......C'mere and get the phone, it's for you!" I am much more comfortable, relaxed, and basically less polite in my own home and my communication style definitely reflects this. I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. My Writing Style Whenever I get a writing assignment for class, it seems like a chore. I don't have a problem with writing, but papers always seem to take more time than they should. Maybe this is due to poor planning on my part, but essays are usually an ordeal, and I dread actually doing the work to finish one. The task is simple enough, but putting it off always seems like a better alternative to writing. I do think about the paper that I have to write, but I do not put thoughts and ideas into a paper or outline until I absolutely need to do so. From the moment I am given an assignment sheet, I begin brainstorming about the paper. I may not use any of these ideas, but I think of them. I also have a tendency to forget good ideas, which leads me to think...show more content... Because of this, it makes sense to clear my head rather than struggle with the paper. What I actually do to clear my head varies from listening to music, talking to friends, watching TV, or playing games, yet each activity allows me to get my mind off finishing an essay. For a little while, I'm able to go back to brainstorming while I have a little fun, and this makes the already–easy body paragraphs even easier. I make an effort not to forget about my papers, though, because procrastinating just leads to an unfun few hours before a deadline. The writing process changes in the sense that I have a very limited amount of time to finish working, and it causes unnecessary stress trying to complete a strong paper without being able to take a little break. While I feel my work doesn't suffer from having to meet a fast–approaching deadline, I'd just rather not have to write a paper in an hour, or two if I'm lucky. While I don't want to write a paper in one hour, I'll usually try to complete it in one day. I feel that if I leave too much time between working on it, I'll lose the mindset for writing and slow down the process. If this happens, I have to spend time getting mentally ready to write, and if I wait a long time between writing sessions, I'm liable to forget good ideas I may have had. Because of this, I make sure to get back to work and allow the words to flow once again. Depending on the topic and the class, I may have to write an additional three or Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Reflective Essay On My Writing Style My process of writing this piece was unique in that I really had to write a piece that was more thoughtful and intimate than most assignments. My method involved writing everything at once, tweaking words, exploring different approaches or ideas, and improving weak parts. It was immensely consuming and took hours of carefully reading and adjusting. The struggles I faced were finding a topic about which I was passionate, and synthesizing everything in the final paragraph. The discussions we had in class altered my understanding of personal essays, elevating it from simply another writing style to an art form. I was particularly influenced by the style of Didion's In Bed. The entire piece sounded informal yet refined, as if she were speaking to a friend. Conferencing was useful for feedback about my writing style and suggestions for a title, which ultimately helped me write the final paragraph. I believe all of these insights helped me to craft a beautiful essay of which I am really proud. As an LA learner, I have learned to write in a completely different voice, share information about myself in a new way, and put to paper elements of dialogue...show more content... The scenario has occurred enough times that I can almost see the pattern now. Recently, I passed a group of older students in the hall, a few catching sight of me strolling to class, one nodding his head towards me, always muttering the same recycled comments. "Look at his shoes – who the hell would wear suede shoes in the summer?" and "Why can't you wear normal stuff?" or perhaps, "He knows there isn't a dress code here, right?" For years I have listened surreptitiously to their comments, yet I have gradually learned to no longer pay any attention to them. What offended at first has become so commonplace at school, on the street, on the bus that frankly, I've grown deaf to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
